A hundred years ago or so, a wagon load of freshly minted silver dimes disappeared between the Denver mint and Arizona. None of the coins have ever been found in circulation. No sign of the guards or wagon we're ever found. Some have speculated that perhaps something went wrong along The Black Canyon of the Gunnison Gorge... Who knows?

You got that right, when I was about 11, I walked down to the river bridge that was about half a mile or so from my house, and found an old jewelry box in The Sandbar with a bunch of junk costume jewelry in it. I found a lot of stuff under that bridge, one time the high school got rid of a bunch of old musical instruments by dumping them right by there.
So anyway I got home and I showed my mother the jewelry and of course her being a proper liberal, she worked out scenarios in her head that it probably belonged to some elderly woman exactly like my grandma who was probably moving and it fell off the truck into the river. I mean this theoretical story is ridiculous why would it wait to fall off a truck until it got on the bridge and how would it fall off the bridge into the river. But that was the way her Twisted mind would turn things. And of course in her version the little old lady was a widow woman and the jewelry was more than just about the trinkets, it was memories of her dearly departed husband she had spent her entire life with but was dead now and these were the only memories of him she would have so it would really mean a lot to her. And all of this from a broken jewelry box of some pretty cheap crap.
Anyway she called the cops telling me we would probably get a big reward or something or at least get to meet the little old lady who would thank us profusely.
What we got instead was they accused me of possibly being involved in burglary claiming that I had friends that I probably helped break into houses and stole this and had made up the story about finding it when my mother caught me with it. Well she didn't catch anything I brought it to her and showed her but in any event I got questioned they couldn't do a lot to me because I was a minor but they were sure threatening my parents.
Of course They confiscated it and they told her that if no one claimed it it would be returned to us and we could keep it if my story checked out.
My mother kept checking in with them asking about it because there was a pendant she liked. After about a month she found out it had all been sold at auction and we wouldn't get anything out of it.
And that's what you get when you try to do the right thing

Also a quick Google search reveals that the Denver mint didn't start construction until 1897 and didn't start minting coins until 1906. Now these coins were 1894 they could be Clark and Gerber territorial gold pieces which would make them worth substantially more.

Well I'm still stuck on the Gold Mormon Coins that were stolen from the SLC Mint back in the late 1840's. I mean please understand the reason why I say that it's a big deal is bc they were the first coins ever minted at the new SLC mint and were priceless. The coins that were taken were supposedly worth millions of dollars and they cannot be found. They've never surfaced. The story behind this also comes about the real truth behind the gold and where it came from. Thats a great legend. The Lost Rhodes Mines. The Story behind this coinage too is $100 dollar gold pieces were not supposedly made but legend goes that a few of them were made. There is only a few $50 dollar pieces in circulation. Look up their value. WORTH ALOT OF MONEY.

The Denver mint didn't mint any gold coins until 1906. It was a private mint until 1862 when the US Gov bought it and turned it into an assay office and it poured gold bullion. So between
1862-1906 no gold coinage was produced at the Denver mint. If it was robbed in 1894 there were no gold coins to steal

You hit the nail on the head. All stories are just stories without researchable facts. I was reading all the prospecting and metal detecting magazines printed from the 1960's to 1990's, which contained thousands of treasure stories that were word of mouth stories without any factual evidence. I noticed after time that some of the stories morphed into a bigger story for different locations. I lived in Carbon County for my first 49 years of life with being in the know and I have not heard of this story either, but who knows this could be a true story. If the government confiscated it there should be an evidence paper trail that can be found with a good researcher.
