- 2017 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S Review - In this review I get to ride the fantastically high tech KTM Super Adventure in "S" (Street) guise. The bike is laden with electronic wizadry including a full colour TFT screen, Bosch cornering ABS and those incredible front lights. Firmly targeted at the BMW GS and Ducati Multistrada buyer, stay tuned for the next few minutes to see if it lives up to the hype....
Many thanks to the guys at The KTM Centre in Hemel Hempstead for making the bike available to me for review.

Some of the best bike reviews anywhere on CZcams - deserving of a lot more subscribers. This is most certainly my next two wheel investment. You forgot a few of the small features that has me sold on the KTM.... The corner headlights, 1 on at 10% lean, 2 at 20% lean and 3 on at 30% lean. They sit bottom of the wasp face. It also has the "floating" panniers to protect contents against vibrations. The charger under the grey flap underneath the TFT. And lastly the wireless charger sitting on the right of the TFT. Thanks again for another great review TMF.
Thanks Henry - and yes there are so many features on this bike it's hard to cover them all in one video! Thanks for pointing those out....
Just sold my RTLC after a test ride on one of these, love the ride quality, the suspension is amazing and the engine Wow that is fantastic! Orders in and should take delivery in a couple of weeks 🖒 Thanks for taking the time to do these reviews, there really good. All the best George
+George Newell Thanks George, enjoy the new bike...an incredible machine!
Another video which is a spot on TMF! Love your reviewing style, informative but interesting! Keep it up 😁
Thank you sir - and will do....
By far the best review of this bike I've seen...so much so I've just bought one!
Thank you and congratulations!
Yet another excellent video! I am sold on this bike. I lusted over the gs for a few months. I want the HOOLIGAN aspects of this bike.
It certainly has those - in spades!
Thank you very much, for taking time to put this review together.
+Renato Lopes You're very welcome and it was my pleasure....
Another great vid, I really would like that display fitted to my GS and I agree, if it had an inbuilt gps it would be even better.
Wouldn't it just....I can't imagine the next version of the GS coming point without a full TFT surely....?
Great vid
I bought a ktm S on the back of it
Dealer has it ready cant release due to covid 19
Keep the vids they are excellent
Thanks Colin and congratulations on the new bike - it'll be worth the wait!
Great Review as usual. I think it will be a KTM that replaces my 1200 GSA when I am due for a change. The only set back with KTM as you mentioned is chain drive, but bI am sure I can live with that.
Yeah, for me that's not a big deal, I have 3 chains to maintain, what's another one!
Picked up my 1290 SA S today and am delighted with it. Test rode a 2018 GS1250 Adventure and whilst awesome too the KTM wins on the engine, the looks and sheer individuality. I’m 5’ 10 with a 30inch inside leg, and it was daunting when I sat on it the showroom. But, a low Touratech seat and new boots with generous sole mean that I can flat foot on my left leg while covering rear brake. If you are in the West Country then James Metcalfe at AMS Motorcycles (Tewkesbury) is the man to speak to! A really superb bike that steers magnificently and inspires real confidence. Thank you TMF for helping me decide!
Congratulations on your new bike - an amazing bit of kit! Roll on summer....
Just picked up a new one while my sdr is fixed and love the plush suspension and lack of wind .. make the superduke feel a bit raw.. not ready to swap yet but it's gona happen ..
Enjoyable review made me very interested in riding one... but as noted below in other comments, no "S" in the USA. You made me feel as if I have in proxy though; so I thank you for that! Love that TFT screen. Just beautiful. Criticism? Plastic brake fluid reservoir.
Yeah you're not the first to not like the brake fluid reservoir - given they're in your face all the time I'm surprised bike manufacturers don't make them a bit more inspiring.....
just the T model I think.
Another great video TMF, oh I must mention I collect my new KTM 1290 Adventure s tomorrow 😎👍🏻safe riding buddy 🛵
Congratulations!
Great review as usual woke me up to KTM please keep them coming.....Mark
Will do Mark - cheers....TMF
Hey awesome, been waiting for this one from your highness for a while. It is indeed an awesome bike and tops my wish list. Only two things IMO to make it ultimate: shaft drive like you mentioned, and the second is having a switch whereby you could opt for the cornering lights to be activated at will, really useful for some of the mountain roads I ride and occasionally get caught out by darkness on. Thanks very much for this post.
Cheers Roger, and yes I forgot to mention those cornering lights, would like to have a go with them....
Always enjoy your reviews!
I don't like the front lights though, looks like a mask/shield - of course that's a matter of preference.
Hoping to watch your review on the Ducati Multistrada Enduro soon, I hope. Meanwhile, keep the brilliant videos coming!
Thank you Marcus....
I don't think I've ever heard you being so excited on a test ride.👍🏼 pick mine up tomorrow.
Lucky man - enjoy....
Yet another fantastic review TMF. You somehow seem to nail pretty much all the questions I would have in your down to earth commentary. I'm in Aus and my wife is now a pillion passenger touring convert, after I have completed many years of mostly solo riding. We are keen to get an adventure bike and had been almost sold on one of the GS variants; however, my heart has always been with the KTM, and this new 1290 seems to have everything. However, the 860mm seat height is 10mm higher than the GS's low setting and that concerns me. The GS is already on the high side for my 32" inside leg. Will try out and see if it's possible to live with. Thanks for the review.
Much more coming on this bike soon - stay tuned!
great video
i like the look of the ktm and i love adventure bikes. 160 hp seems very powerful.
i just miss the chaft drive.
cheers Tom
...yes a lot of people say the same thing, for me it's not a deal breaker - I have other bikes with chains, one more to clean and lubricate no big deal!
Well Mr Flyer yet another excellent review, real roads, real riding properly useful information for those of that ride everyday under all conditions. Had I not bought my Africa Twin DCT in Jan 17 (great bike - 95% perfect 95% of the time), I think I would have to get one of these. I was a died in the wool sportsbike / super naked fan with no interest in Adventure bikes.... until I rode one.. I get it now for the everyday real world rider they are so practical and such a laugh to ride. The only thing I would say is that by the time i finished clicking on the online configurator is was up over 17 grand (did load it up though), bit miffed that a couple of options were quite a few quid for just a software enable.... I reckon this bike has got to tick more boxes than pretty much any other, it might not be 100% at any one thing but is 90+% at everything and that low down torque must be pretty addictive. I'm frightened to book a test ride... it would inevitably lead to divorce.. and i wasn't looking to spend quite that much. Keep up the good work.
Cheers Matt - and yes those configurators are dangerous aren't they...very easy to get a bike to silly money...
Great review as always TMF. Interesting to see that BVG on 44 Teeth found the 1290 was less fun to ride than the 1090.
+Daren Morley Yes I tend to agree with that analysis, you can ride it harder and not get into silly speeds....
GPS as from 2018 has now been integrated in to the screen 😊
I've only watched 3 minutes so far but that dash is absolutely amazing!
Isn't it just!
One day, another bike is going to have a bigger dash (screen). what then?
It's not the size I'm so impressed with, it's the clarity. Having said that I prefer the idea of a HUD so there's no need to take your eyes off the road.
The dash is effin amazing, i looked at one in the dealer as soon as they got the first 1290 SA R in.
Love it! Had a sit on one at the Manchester bike show and god is that seat is hard, but then again I do seem to struggle with bike seats. The styling is like something from another time dimension. What's not to like? Yet another great review sir.
Thank you John - and I completely agree!
Great vid - thank you. I actually like the KTM styling! And more chunky and substantial than a Multistrada I sat on. Would go for the T - the heated seat and grips always useful in the Nova Scotia spring and fall! Cheers Phil.
+Phil RIta Thank you Phil...and agreed, can't beat heated bits when it's cold....
Love the Instrument display . Love to see something like that on my GS !
So would I...and that engine.... :0) BMW have some catching up to do me thinks....
BMW will likely have similar next year based on what Bosch was showing at Intermot in October last year.
great review never rode one but personally I don't like orange as a colour for a bike and if something that is a tourer at 14000 quid should have a shaft drive I am sorry to say, love the screen though.
I agree about the shaft drive. They have a black colour option which is awesome.
It is not an instrument display, because there are no instruments. It just a read out display. A boring square read out display. If they would have an app you could stick your phone in front of you and have the same info.
Serious report, comfortable to listen to. Well done!
Thank you very much - appreciated!
Another great review TMF. Great!
Thank you Richard, thank you...
Just subscribed, great reviews (especially enjoyed this KTM 👍) Medical issues with my knees sadly prevent me from riding a bike, so for me , I get extra enjoyment as well as a thrill from watching your videos!
I was wondering if you'd consider reviewing a Peugeot Metropolis RS 2017 in the near future? I'd love to know what your opinion of it from a practical point of view for riders who like myself don't want to miss out on the thrills of riding due to health issues.
Regards
Wayne.
Thanks Wayne, and welcome along, good to have you aboard! I can't say as I've even heard of the Peugeot Metropolis.....off to look it up now! Cheers - TMF
Great review as always TMF. These bikes are getting more and more electronic rider aids. Lean-sensitive traction control, cornering abs, active suspension. There's less and less skill required. I think for my next bike I'd like something a bit simpler (the 1090 Adventure for example) although I feel like having a change from this style of bike. I'm not against progress or tech but I want to enjoy learning to control the bike properly myself.
...in that case you'll love the 1090....another great bike and as you say a little less sophisticated on the electrickery front....
Great review I want one looks awesome
Thanks - and me too!
If you can get one ... I'm waiting for mine since October and still have no delivery date. Sad. :(
Great channel, Mr. Flyer. I've had a V Strom 650 and really like it. After a long road trip through Colorado, Wyoming and Montana with lots of wind, I started thinking about something more powerful and less likely to be buffeted about. I've been considering Harleys, but still really like the ADV format, too. I'm intrigued by this bike! Looks like it's now available in the US. Your videos enjoyable and useful!
Glad to be of use John - cheers!
Did you hear about any good after-market bags that work well for this bike? Thanks again!!
What a great bike! Not a fan of the usual KTM styling, but this one looks excellent. Even the quirky headlight looks good. I imagine luggage would knock a big dent in £1k but this is still a relatively well priced bike. Not had my bike long, but if i was in the market for a new one I reckon this would be it!!
Yes me too!
Hey man, still watching the video but, would like to request one if you could at some point.. Would you be interested in test riding the GSX - S125 at some point when they're released? Not sure if you do 125's but would be a great watch. Love your review style.
Yeah I love 125's (I have a couple of recent reviews on them) - if I can, I will! Cheers - TMF
Thank you there TMF!! Your videos get better and better!!! I have a request if possible: I am torn between the R1200 GS Adventure and the Multistrada Enduro; I already know your opinion on the GSA though I feel it would help a lot if you could test ride the Multi Enduro. I would love to see how the two compare.
Also, it would be great if you could mention in your videos the reliability aspect of bikes (based on the brand, or other).
All the best. A
Thanks A - I would love to try the MTS Enduro but currently don't have access to a bike to test - I am working on it though so stay tuned!
Another great review.
Attention to detail on this bike is impressive.
That grey cover in the middle of the handlebars is a charging point thingy. It also has a little box on the right-side by the screen for charging your phone, will take a large phone, has usb for charging. Also, the pannier mounts at the back are spring mounted to allow a bit of movement, stiff springs, but the idea is that when hurtling along and the panniers are moving, they move slightly on the mounts so as not to upset the back of the bike. How cool is that??
As stated by TMF an integrated sat nav would be it - the only way to better it.
That said the screen adjustment is clunky compared to the GS, and could definitely be improved.
Cheers Mr Hmm...appreciate you stopping by - TMF
Great review as usual. Just a couple of points to clarify, they are all keyless as standard and the quickshifter is fitted to all bikes, you just have to pay to get it unlocked. I pick mine up tomorrow.
Thanks for the clarification Colin and enjoy your new bike - hope the weather is kind for you for the next few weeks :0) All the best - TMF
Looks like you've fixed that blurry problem you had with your speedo
First of all, lovely short review of the beast.. Love the way you intro on your videos TMF "hello there kids"..! :-)
Sir, in our country we only have 5 offerings from KTM (duke 200, 250, 390 & RC 200, 390), which is pretty darn sad!
On the flip side, Honda & BMW are offering the Africa Twin and the 1200 GS & GSA... I am a die hard fan of KTM Sir.. Been riding the Duke since last 3 yrs..
Really looking forward to the mighty Adventure series from KTM... I would book it on the 1st day they launch them in our country...
Much love and respect from India.. Love your review vids... Would like them more if you could off road the mighty adv bikes atleast for 5 mins of video footage...
Ride safe, godspeed
Oh yeah, Triumph launched the Explorer too few months back... Don't know what's holding the KTM guys back... Although the KTM guys have the most extensive showroom & service centres all over here... It would be really great if they launch the mighty Advs here soon..
+Dr. S Chakraborty yes odd one that! Thanks for watching and for the kind comments- all the best - TMF
thanks for your wishes :)
just bought my first KTM 1290 advs collect it next week really really excited
Ooh congratulations Dale - lovely bike!
Hello TMF, absolutely love your channel. Had the pleasure of riding this master of engineering This past Saturday and just fell head over heals. You sir are my favorite UK you tuber.
You sir have great taste! ;0)
Great review, it inspired me to broaden my new bike search from the Africa Twin vs BMW R1200GS Rallye to include the KTM Super Adventure 1290. If the BMW Rallye had been as good to ride as it was to look at I would probably have bought it and not got to try the KTM, luckily for me it wasn't (how can BMW make the Rallye and the TE handle quite so differently on road??) and on the strength of this review I contacted The KTM Centre in Hemel (Jason) and booked a test ride. Jason persuaded me to try the S and the R versions, though I had already made up my mind following the BMW experience that I wasn't going to enjoy the R. Well, today I bought the KTM SA 1290 R! Thanks TMF, this one's down to you. Oh and if anyone has managed to read this far and is wondering why I didn't include the Ducati in my shortlist, I did and it's all right, but not all right enough to overcome the angry-parrot looks. The alien insect wins!
Congratulations - great choice! Did you mention my name to Jason??
I did. Credit where credit's due.
Good man - That means he might lend me another bike to review ;0)
lovely, straight down the ktm dealer then (wherever that is) , am I right in thinking you did a blog on bar end mirrors? my son is thinking of buying some. thanks.
Yeah I did on the Triumph Street Triple some time back not sure where it lives currently but it's in my back catalogue somewhere!
Thinking of this one, with Metzeler Roadtec 01.
But it is a hard bargin, love the Tuono v4 1100 rr 2015 and the Yamaha MT-10 SP 2017.
But they are at the shop, the Yamaha with engine failure and the Aprilia with gearbox failure.
Oh dear....
Another great review TMF. Quick question - does the quick shifter auto-blip the throttle on downshifts like on the GS?
I can't honestly remember from my ride but I suspect yes, don't they all???
After first 5000 kms with the 1290 SAS and coming from 3 GS I have to say that it is a different experience. If you like to twist the throttle no discussion : KTM is superior. Refinement specially in gearbox is better in GS...... but riding experience is better with KTM.
Stiff suspension and atomic twin makes you fly from one corner to the next and my pillion feels as comfortable as in GS
Thanks for your vid. It helped me to make my mind.
Greetings from Barcelona.
+Javier Masfarre Cheers Javier!
having just bought a 2017 GS I knew I'd probably regret watching this..what a lovely bike! I've always been curious about the flat twin however, so I'll get it out my system and join the orange army later!
Fair enough! ....you still chose well, the GS is a stonker....
TheMissendenFlyer yep just got past the 5000rpm service limit today...the GS is NOT an old man bike!..these things can hustle! great review as always!
Hi Flyer, now i have done my test rides yesterday. I have ridden the Ducati Multistrada 1200 S, BMW R1200 GS, Triumph Tiger Explorer XRT an the KTM 1290 SA S. My short conclusion is, that die KTM won the race, but not shortly behind, for me, is the Triumph. BMW and Ducati are out at this time. The Ducati costs a lot and has by far not the quality of all other bikes and she is very loud which i think, it's not good on tours and i get headache. The BMW is a little bit to nervous and if you go into corners, she fall alone into it and you have to hold her back (my opinion). But it's such a smooth and easy to ride bike.
The surprize was the Triumph, very smooth engine and the power is enough for everything. You don't have the punch, but it is very fun to drive it. I couldn't feel the top heavyness, the bike rides just as on rail roads. For me, the Triumph has the best cornering line, very smooth and stable. In comparison to all bikes, the Triumph has the most comfortable seat.
Last but not least, the KTM is a hell of a fun to drive. The "Ready to race" thing on the screen is true. It feels very light and handles brilliant. I thought i could go into the corners much deeper than with my actual Aprilia Dorsoduro 1200 ABS/ATC.
If i can sell my Aprilia, i will by the KTM and as 2nd option the Triumph.
Greetings, Daneras
Very good!
Great review .. thanks very much .. got the 1190 and thinking of upgrading. Bit worried about the engine heat as quite bad on the 1190 but supposed to be better on the 1290. How did you find it ?
Didn't notice any issue, but then I'm used to riding my Panigale!!
Great review, you're getting them nailed now :-)
+Spirit Biker Thanks:0)
Mr Flyer, Would love to see your ride impression of this compared to the R version with focus on handling, wind protection etc, dealers near me have them in stock but no demos.
+Peter Muller I have had the chance to ride an R but turned it down on the grounds of its height (too tall for me). Other than the increased height/suspension travel and the spoked wheels basically the same bike....nothing to choose between them on handling, wind protection etc.
Brilliant review!
Thank you!
Gorgeous bike. Nice review.
Than you Stizzy...
Good Evening, Thank you for the video A nice bike like you say BMW have got there work cut out, I think the display is very good and clear. Take care.
Cheers Wayne, and they certainly have....
Great channel, Big CC adventure bikes are hanging on by their teeth, Dakar bikes are showing us that. 450cc! even cars are going that way, Focus ST line 1.0L, 3 cyl, the BMW 310 GS is the writing on the wall, keep hold of that CRF 250L......your thoughts
I couldn't find a KTM I liked to replace my beloved 990SMT but this came close. What I want is a KTM that looks as good as the Super Duke 1290R, has the electronics of this bike, the engine of the 1090 and kerb weight under 180kg. And no dustbin exhaust FFS! 😁
Some reviewers dismissed this bike simply because of its lack of shaft drive, crazy, good review .
Well different people value different things, I like the convenience of the shaft drive but it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me for sure...
Another quality episode TMF! The styling is...bold, but it's that urine sample-style brake reservoir that looks out of place in a supposedly premium cockpit. It's like the walnut & leather cabin of an Aston Martin, with burger wrappers scattered along the top of the dashboard.
They have a dark smoke one on the 1290 SD which looks massively better, I think it's about 40 Euros and I will be discussing a swap with the dealer.
Thanks for the kind words PipUKGS....so would you have one over a GS???
I'm more tempted to the orange side by the 'junior' KTM 1090 Adventure which you tested a few weeks ago, which has all the basic essentials of accessible power & torque, agility, practicality, quality suspension & brakes, rider aids and character (in a good way!) but with less bulk, complexity, and expense. Plus KTMs don't seem to spawn out of the tarmac by the dozen when the sun comes out like GSs do ;-)
Yes the 1090 was a blast too.....
I can't unsee it!!!
Hi TMF I'm a regular viewer of your channel and really enjoy your informative reviews, brilliant work. Right, that's enough smoke up the bottom I'm after some advice please.
I currently ride a 2015 KTM 690 SMC R and I've contemplated crossing over to the adventure side for a while. Although I've never ridden one, I'm a big fan of the GS and planned on getting a triple black. This new KTM has chuckled a massive spanner in the works !!
Now, is this KTM a better bike than the current GS ? Can you poodle on it if you like or is it balls out mental all the time ? Is it really usable or just a beast that really has too much power ? Also the NAV 5 is as you know awesome, do you think KTM will incorporate NAV into that wicked display ?I know I need to test both but any advice/opinions would be much appreciated.
Keep up the good work !
Steve.
Personally I think the KTM is the better bike currently, easy to ride at low speed as well as very fast...who knows what will become of GPS, I think whoever integrates a GPS into their display first will be onto a winner. As you say, try both! All the best - TMF
Nice review and awesome bike! Bring them to the US please.
I can't believe they're not already?!
Just want to add two points that always are over looked on keto vs gs comparrisons. No bias I've owned both. Love ktm power and bmw functionality. Two points are as follows. 1) the telelever system on the bmw it far better for pillion comfort as it eliminates head banging on gear change or straon under breaking effect much better and less tiring for touring. 2) BMW has a fundimental off road riding issue...Two cyclinders that potentially can total the bike on a big off road off. They also prevent you putting your leg forwards on off road rining as the always hit my leg. Just thought it worth mentioning these points in a future comparison...
Best gs made to date gs1150, appalled your shock went so soon. Extortion to replace and makes you realise advanced bike teck is greeted to go wrong and tie people to the dealer network...
Hey mr tmf, i was wondering if your bike has a valve opening and closing sound each time you went over and under 2000 rpm as my SA would.. Thankyou for your reply
Nope - not that I noticed....
Love the dash looks very cool
Doesn't it just! ...and good to hear from you again Landyandy!
That screen looks ace, why BMW didn't do something similar is beyond me!
If money was no object I'd seriously consider one of these but perhaps I'd try the Ducati Multistrada
first.
Thanks for the review MR TMF, if you could get your hands on a Duke it would be good to see and hear your opinion.
cheers
Yeah would love too, unfortunately it's not easy for me to borrow Ducati's...I need to do more work in that department! Stay tuned....
This thing needs a low mount can at least as an option. That water heater just eats too much premium pannier space.
Great review, as usual, 👍.
Thanks :0)
Just look at the LCD screen. Amazing.
...technically TFT but I do agree - if only it had an integrated SatNav....
Another great review TMF, certainly a bike to worry BMW on both the S1000XR and GS fronts I would say...
Simon Oldfield It'll keep BMW honest at least. Give them something to think about perhaps.
Yeah agreed Simon, I don't suppose BMW will take it lying down though...looking forward to seeing what happens next!
I don't think this will worry XR users one bit mainly because that's an inline 4 and this is a twin. I would say it will hurt GS sales though, this just looks, sounds and goes so much better.
Maybe the XR users will get worried if these start going past them. ;)
Well I wont be worried that's for sure, they are a great bike but people that want an inline 4 wont be deterred by a twin. it is horses for courses. You go for what you want out of a bike and how it feels. I love the smoothness of the XR and everything about it. I would need to ride a 1290 before making my final judgement.
Great review
Thanks :0)
Hi TMF another great unbiased review which is what we have become accustomed to with your VLOGS I love the dash BUT feel BMW have been left with their cocks hanging out run the breeze here with the LCD display on this new bike...as an LC GSA rider myself it sad that BMW haven't kept up with the technological changes and not brought out similar stuff with their new beema range e.g. the rallye x ( x being for extra off road grunty stuff ) from all th reviews I've read it seems to me people are moving over to either the new 1090 adventure R or going the whole 9 yards and ponying up for the 1290 Adventure r with all the goodies..
to be fair to bmw I still do feel the beema to be a slightly more "refined " bike but at the end of the day bmw need to keep a closer finger in the pulse
100% agree with that....
I just cannot wait until they let you play films on the dash. Nothing excites me more than a nice Sunday ride whiles watching Finding Nemo or even, if I'm feeling particularly adventurous, The Lion King. Studies by the Daily Mail show its safer to ride whiles watching movies......who would have thought. Ohh and great video yet again.
Cheers Jon ;0)
Hi there , sounds great but with the settings do they stay the same when you turn the bike off , or do you have to go through them all the time.
Nope, stay the same iirc
So..given the fact that you've ridden the super duke R and the super adventure S, where would you put your money? Quick and no beating around the bush. Great videos by the way, you're the man!
If I could only have one bike the Super Adventure S....if I already had an "all-rounder" then the Super Duke R.....
I'm thinking that this Bike may have a few obvious negatives over the Triumph tiger explorer 1200. Number 1. The small, not so easily adjustable, windscreen deflector / Number 2. The fairly hard seat / Number 3. The Chain Drive / Number 4. The height off the ground when seated / Number 5. The Colour choices. Convince me I'm wrong before I buy a new bike. Enjoying all your videos. Very helpful advice. Thanks.
Just have a go on the SA-S and the big Explorer, you won't need me to tell you which is by far and stratospherically the better bike.....
I own a 690R and it's nearly new so no issues, but I hesitated on the bigger bikes because KTM USA seems to leave their dealer network holding the bag and don't honor many repairs that would be a no brainer no hassle job with a BMW. The end result is when you do have issues, KTM will fight their dealer so the dealers are not motivated to help with warranty work. This is what put the polish on the decision for the GS/A.
+Chris Esser Interesting to hear Chris and you're not the first to say something similar I'm afraid...how are you finding the 690?
It's really light and something like 68HP, it is very fun. I live in a heavily urban environment, heavy constant traffic and horribly broken pavement. It is a great bike for those conditions. However my preference are back country roads with a lot less traffic and those are an hour motorway haul from me.
The 690 though plenty powerful at highway speeds, is just not a very pleasant ride. It gets blown all over the road, exactly what you would expect from a spindly dual-sport. I wound up with the GS/A next to it, because an hour on the highway on that bike is just a sleepy minor task. The 690 for me is fine
Hi TMF i like how the mirrors are stable no matter what speed or even rough roads you are on, one thing though do you know the mpg is like compared to say your GS? Do you think it's possible to have a bike with too many electronics? I know you like your gadgets as do I. You have to be one of the best bike reviewers out there. I hope you keep growing and doing more mate. Ride safe TMF.
Thank you for the kind words Chris - very kind of you to say so. ....and yes I suppose you can have too much electronics on a bike but I don't think we've got there yet. And unfortunately I can't really comment on the MPG as I didn't empty a whole tank and refill, I have no reason to believe the fuel "economy" will be significantly worse than any other similarly sized bike. Thanks for watching and for stropping by - TMF
Bought one in japan
Very excited!!
Waiting for phone call from the dealer
Congratulations!
Ay up Mr Flyer, I've just sent the link to your excellent review to my buddy who works for KTM at the factory in Mattighofen. He's not directly involved with the build and design project of the Adventure bikes. He is part of the Moto3 development team. I'll be sure to share any feedback. Once again chap, top review 😎👍🏼
Thanks John....
@John: Maybe your friend could find out what the hell is going on with the delivery schedule? The lack of communication is very frustrating. ;)
Ta!
EU Bike Dude
Ooo ek, I'm not sure he could resolve those kinds of issues EU Bike Dude but I can feel your pain.
I can only imagine the UK dealers are yanking on the supply chain pretty hard if customers are being inconvenienced 😳
Nice review. Appreciated.
Glad you liked it....
SW Motech sells a very nifty GPS mount for the Garmin 590LM (same mount as our Nav V)! Now the KTM and the BMW have interchangeable nav screens.
...but you can control the SatNav via the BMW handlebar control, on the KTM you would have to use your finger on the screen...which I think may be a no no under new UK laws..
A pity the mirroring will likely be many months away. That will cast the phone maps/directions to the bike screen.
Im sure they would sell a lot more if they changed that hideous looking headlight, otherwise i love it although on an adventure bike all that power is uneccesary for 90% of the time. BMW could give you more power but obviously feel its not needed. Excellent review again👍
I really like the display on this bike, I think these are the way to go in the future - have you suffered any glare issues with it in sunlight?
It was fine all the time I was riding, looked really clear to me, great bit of kit....
hi all your reviews are great is there any way you can do a review on the 2016 ktm 690 duke soon thanks
Yep - already done, will upload Friday the 14th around 4pm UK....
thanks will look out for it
Good stuff - that's another view I can bank on then :0)
front light reminds me BMW R1200ST, widely considered as ugly, but I love it.
next month big choice, GS or...?
..difficult one eh?
hmm, yes and no. GS was dream bike, always on the wall. But there is so many things to try these days.
I test rode one last week - loved it. But, asides from probably being too fast for an old duffer like me, that lovely dash (which, incidentally, flashes red near the red line) came up with an 'ABS FAILURE' warning. Had to re-boot the bike to clear it. Cue Windows PC start-up sound. And, perhaps slightly more worryingly, it was a pig to get into neutral. Even when warm. On the odd occasion I was able to get it out of gear the green neutral light sometimes took ages to illuminate. Possible deal breaker for me...
Oh dear Rod, I had no such issues I'm glad to report....
The front end light reminds me of the BMW ST that did not sell too well, but this looks like the business
Yeah I think KTM have got it right with this one, although I know some people hate the looks of the thing...
Heard horror stories about front tyre wobble , what is your opinion on this ? is it a reason not to buy ?
I'm glad you mentioned the HUGE exhaust. That and another pikey looking brake reservoir are the only downers for me. I like the way the headlights light up equally on both sides as opposed to pirate bikes like mine. lol
Yeah I don't know what it is with these (mainly Japanese) bikes that do the "one light on dip" thing - never managed to get a good answer on that...
Someone in the bike trade told me that 2 lights on the front of a bike can make it look like you're further away and cause people to pull out on you. I think I'd rather have both my lights on and take my chances.
Top Review. Want one now, but for touring I want a shaft drive please KTM
+Craig Thompson What is it about the shaft drive that appeals so much out of interest?
I had 95k kms on my 2010 VFR12, shaft failed at 65k. Bought a Z1000 SX Tourer which now has 30k on its std chain n sprox and I think I've adjusted it 3 times only. Maintenance schmaintenance. I'm expecting my new 1290 S in a couple weeks time, so thanks for the excellent review TMF.
Hi, I´ve been going through many of your videos, great stuff, congrats! Just wanted to know what´s your view on the KTM 1290 Super Adv S vs KTM Super Duke GT, as both are very powerful touring bikes and tbh I can´t make my mind between those two. Cheers
Well they are both different, the GT being a bit more performance focused. Personally I prefer the SA-S but that's just my personal preference....
Tyvm. Yes, I´m leaning toward the SA-S as well, it´s a better all-rounder and the TFT screen and LED front are gorgeus. I´m sure they will incorporate those too in the next iteration of the GT though.
Yes I expect so, if they put a TFT screen with SatNav on the next iteration of GS I'd have one of those too!
Great review as usual TMF. Do you have any idea why KTM has decided not to export the "S" to the States?? The updated "T" is not a very good seller here and dealers are trying to unload them with discounts of $4,000. I for one would be buying an "S" if I could.
+scott peters No I have no idea, how very strange (and a pity as it's a stonking bike!)...
VERY NICE indeed might have to go look at one.......err looking at a speed triple tomorrow so might stop by the KTM shop :-)
If you go to the KTM centre in Hemel do tell them I sent you (good bunch of lads!)....which Triumph shop do you use?
i will mention you of course....i am looking at the 1050 in brackley, northants....not sure its the one though !
I'm confused, you said the screen put your head in the turbulent zone; that would be annoying if touring. Does the screen adjustment fix this or would you need an aftermarket?
+Oli Banks Well personally I'd go for an aftermarket job i.e. An MRA spoiler or similar....I suspect it's fairly easily fixed....
Really good review yet again tmf, but to use one of your expressions Fugly. But I really like the Ktm 1290 super duke r.
...well I did say it's looks split opinions! I like it personally.....
Had several ktm's and no problems at all. Had several bmw's and had some problems.
I now own the 2017 1290 superduke and 1290 super adventure best of both worlds. I'm smitten with ktm . It will take one hell of a bike to make me change
Cheers Mark - good feedback.....
Considering the R model for sure... my only gripe is focused on the windshield being awkward to maneuver on the fly.
Yes it is a bit of a pain, those knobs aint easy to turn (as you saw I wasn't successful on the move!)....
TheMissendenFlyer really interested in seeing more dirt reviews - this has been a weak point for ktm's larger adventure bikes in the past (a shame, since they really specialize in dirt)
I came off my Africa Twin on Thursday. If it’s written off, this might be what I go for. I agree that it’s a good looking bike...
+Russ Mead Oh dear, sorry to hear that Russ - hope you came off unscathed?
TheMissendenFlyer not exactly, but nothing that won’t heal. Luckily my gear took most of the brunt. Just want to get back out there!
Lovely lovely machine, lovely review again. Really adventure bike 2.0. Don't like the front lights, but the engine makes it the bike of choice. Although, the mother of all adventure bike will always be the GS, the KTM's is definitely the new benchmark. Why would anyone consider a GS anymore? Although I believe this KTM is closer to the S1000 xr. Both street use, chaindrive, 160 hp, comporable modes.
If you need a machine which will go anywhere globally. And all you plan to use it for is to get to your favourite latte supplier, then you have to spend tens of thousands on a GS. Right?
Well you can spend 10's of thousands on the KTM too???
TheMissendenFlyer Joking apart, you're right both brands do great bikes.
Hi there, can I ask which you'd rather have, this or the 1090 you tested a few weeks back?
Not as straightforward a decision as it may seem - on balance I'd go with this, but that 1090 is a great bike, it's close...
Hi Andy! It’s been a long time ago, are you able to do a review of the new 1290 super adventure S? Thanks!
Sadly not, it’s just too tall for me!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Haha noooo, it can't be, I am 5.8 and 31 inseam, so aprox. the same size and it feels exactly as a GS height wise for me. The S that is, not the R. I was just curious about what you think of it comparing with the GS because of its' down low center of gravity.
Ok, I've been researching for months now, reading/watching loads of reviews (i ALWAYS turn to your unbiased, informative "real world" reviews as they are simply superb). I've finally decided to bite the bullet after sorting out my finances to go for a new BMW GSA (after dismissing the Africa Twin, V Strom, Tracer, Multistrada etc etc) for my fix of mid Wales weekend blasts and mini tours - i'm getting too old and fat(!) for my bonkers Suzuki TL1000s. Job done i thought, BMW it is.....
Then i see your review of the KTM SA S !!!!
BUGGER!!!
Need to find a KTM dealer now! Is it really as good as you say now that you've had time to reflect on your albeit limited time on it?
Keep up the great reviews, you're providing us all with invaluable insights and info. I don't know where you find the time to keep your channel ticking over so fluently.
+graham tuck Yes sorry Graham, it really is that good...On reflection I'm not sure it's so clear cut but I would be very hard pressed to choose between the two (I suspect the KTM just nudges it on bonkers engine and that amazing tft screen)...
TheMissendenFlyer - thanks for the reply ...I suppose it's down to the test rides. I'll try to arrange back to back testing.
Kinda fun predicament I'm in though, they're both great. 30yrs refinement, reliability and development on the GS versus bonkers engine and design from the "upstart"!
Service and running costs to consider too...
If you ever want a go of my 1997 "proper scary" Suzuki TL1000s just let me know..
