2019 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S Review - Insane

- I've finally got my hands on this hooligan, so here is my first ride vid of the 2019 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S Review series.
The Super Adventure S is the more road biased version of the Super Adventure R, with both bikes attempting to topple the mighty BMW R1200GS and R1200GSA from their mantle. It's got a staggering 160bhp produced from its insane V twin engine, with torque that will wrench your arms off at full whack!
The 2019 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S is going to be in my grubby little hands for a few weeks so this is the first ride review vid, with a more long-term run down review coming shortly.
Hope you enjoy the vid folks, keep SUBSCRIBING, keep SHARING, keep LIKING, and keep letting me know what you think in the COMMENTS section below!

Accidents at that junction onto the bricklayers arms roundabout because people do the red there a lot! Usually bikes getting t-boned as they come off the lights on a green too....
Ah ok, fair one 🙏👍
I should’ve thought it through really before gobbing off, just frustrated with this job, especially at the mo.
👍
@@teapotone Me too buddy!! F*cked innit!! ;)
Totally FUBAR’d
Watched this end of July 2022 when i was considering a 1st adventure bike, bought a new 2020 SAS a month later on my birthday!!! 7 months later, 11000km later, this machine is still BOSS!! Thanks Teapot 🫱🏻🫲🏾
Ha Ha no worries bud, glad you’re enjoying your bike, it’s a proper maniac isn’t it 👏👍
No you are not going mad folks, this is a re-edit of last weeks vid due to some unusual circumstances! I'll do a vid soon explaining what's going on.
👍
My first thought was :
Groundhog day.!
😂
Sorry to be so cryptic, I’ll explain all soon folks 👍
Still a great vid even second time around. All the best 👍
Deja vue
Michael B I think you mean deja view....?
Another great vid Mr, I sure do hope the current situation you find yourself in just goes away, keep up the good work mate you're an inspiration to us all.
I'm 6'4 380lbs. Just got a new 2019 Super Adv S on sale. I rode Harleys for years. I was concerned about comfort and ergonomics. Well I love it. I can flat foot it with the seat in low position. The seat is not as bad as I thought. I'll be getting an aftermarket one though. This thing has more power than any Harley I ever had. Surprisingly comfortable. This thing is awesome!
Just Me welcome to a real bike 🏍💨😂😉😉
Just Me guess we both are about the same shape then. I just wonder if the SD-GT would too as well for us bigger/larger guys. I am so torn between them both
I’m the same size, dropped my foot pegs by 3cm. Amazing fit after. No longer hit my heels on the passenger pegs
Now, that’s a review, Bruce!! And .... more to come! Yours aye, Alan
great review again , I get the feeling you like it🤔, been raining here so I’ve been watching some of your old tour stuff 👍🏻love watching them
Cheers Mark, glad you’re enjoying them again bud 👍
Great review Bruce loving the montage stuff. Quality work
Cheers mate 👍
Thanks John 👍
Traded in my gs 1200 for this exact bike... never looked back.
It’s a LOT of fun isn’t it, total
Hooligan power 👍
Have you tried the gs1250? Ktm is it still better? Iam still thinking bmw or ktm🤔
@@zack_paris9616 in my opinion, the ktm is better cuz it is more offroady and plus, all km bikes can manage off-road which is good
Same!
Great vid Teapot. Love the soundtrack to the montage! The quality of that gopro is awesome. Let me know when you can pop round.
Btw, TJF'd
Amen to that brother!
Cheers Amish, well I’ve got weekend free now so will give you a hell 👍
Hey Amish, speedy recovery mate. Totally agree TJF’d 😉
Collecting mine on next Saturday, cant wait :)
Own a slightly different version of the Ktm, the 1290 Super Adventure R 2018. Same engine but tuned down just bit from the S version. It's the bomb, and it handles much better then any GS off road. I would go as far as to say it handles great on the street as well. The seat does not get hot! I payed 13,800 for the bike new! Was listed at 18,000. I looked at the GS and they wanted $24,000, didn't even include the panniers? I own a BMW also, the R 1100 S Boxer Cup Replica 2014. It's a sports bike and I do love it, but I love my KTM much more! The bike has also been very reliable.
😅super nice Video. And funny as well. The end irs awesome 😂
Subscribed. What a great review
Thanks very much bud, glad you enjoyed it and welcome to the channel 👍
Great video. I've owned this bike for about 6 months and it's such a blast (It was either this or the S1000XR). A lot of people have mentioned the heat, maybe I have asbestos legs as it's never been an issue for me. My previous bike was an air-cooled Monster 1100 which would literally melt you in the seat. I just wish it was a little lower as the weight / height combo make it a right handful at low speed (for me anyway). Keep up the good work on the thin blue line, I don't know how you guys keep moral up when dealing with foul criminals everyday (the politicians giving your orders).
Ha Ha cheers bud 👍
@@teapotone G'day from Australia champ, I just subscribed to your channel and enjoy your vids.stay upright and we'll and all the very best.
Thanks David, welcome to the channel bud, glad you’re enjoying the vids 👍
Your commentary is hilarious, I sub'd because of it 😆
Cheers Ryan 👍
looking for sport tourer for 2024-25, would this or the mts 1260 enduro a good buy?
did you have the traction and/or the wheelie control on? they impact speed tremendously. yes, it's massively quicker than a GS! It will power-wheelie in 3d+ at 80mph....
Yes bud had both on I think 👍
Just discovering your channel - really like your reviews, very detailed. You seem like a really good bloke too 👍
That’s very kind Alex thank you very much, great to hear you’re enjoying all the content 🙏👍
@@teapotone I'm in the process of improving your click through rate! Keep it up 👍
Ha Ha thanks very much Alex 🙇♂️🙏👍
Well that was Jolly Good, just trading in my HD for a proper moto. I gave HD five good years and just keep adding more personality to it. Now the real fun begins, adventure KTM style. You got a follow on the insta too! Ride safe my good man, Cheers from Canada eh!
Thanks for the review, btw what helmet is that you have? Cheers pal.
Hey Bruce ,what was your final verdict comparing this against the duke gt?
This looks cool, so far...👍🏼
An airbox upgrade from either Motohooligan or Rottweiler and a simple fueling correction turn these into an absolute beast when ridden in anger. Hands down the most neutered motor I've ever ridden from the factory, and stock they're very far from slow or sluggish.
HI teapotone, super quality vid as ever. Do you consciously keep you head still for the vids. My vids look like im always looking left right up down ect. I'm not vlogging its just for fun on my country roads. look with my eyes not my head maybe.
Hi Rupe, thanks very much bud, glad you enjoyed it.
Yes it is a conscious decision to try and keep my head fairly still, but the stabilisation of the new GoPro Hero7 really does help too 👍
dude i love the way u handle traffic, I do the same thing where i live (Miami)
Cheers Freddy, Ha Ha the filtering (or lane splitting as a lot of overseas folks call it) gets a lot of comments, especially from Americans! 😂
It’s legal over here but people still shout and scream at me for doing it 😉
After 50+ years of riding long and hard I must say that we now must be at the pinnacle of ICE motorcycles. Add to that the more financially accessible (and perfectly good) availability of pre-owned examples and its really a smorgasbord of choices.
Screen adjusts with one knob. Either hand. What I noticed about the light front end feeling is the movement is in the riders arms. It is very sensative steering. Like passing a big truck the wind is pushing your body but not the bike. let go of the bars and it's smooth.
You need to review the triumph tiger 1200 xrt... I like to know if that runs hot as well.
I’ve not got any contacts with Triumph at the moment but will see what I can do 👍
The big kid in me keeps saying get a KTM, but again, he also says chocolate for every meal. Not sure either would work out so well in the end, but what fun.
I’ve got to say Mark, whilst I had the KTM I absolutely loved the engine but was looking forward to getting my GS back.
Now I have the GS, I really miss that thumping KTM 1290 engine!
I can’t wait to try the Superduke GT in a few weeks 😍👍
Picking my new 1290SAS in a couple of days, trading in an MT10. I wanted something more comfy but still has a naughty side..can’t wait to get it. I’m just not old or sensible enough for a GS just yet 😂
How do you get on with the SAS mate? I’m sorely tempted for the same reasons you stated, more comfort but still mental.
Great video 👍
Cheers Jeff
Does IT lean on right side Without hands?
Hey TP love ya vids mate and thanks for the content. Must say I believe police bikers to be some of the best riders out there .....just a quick question are we allowed to filter up the inside legally I didn't think that was allowed. love the KTM but I have still gone for the 1250GS however was very tempted by the XR which is damn Crazy!!!
Thanks bud, yep it’s legal to filter in the U.K. between queuing lines of traffic but it’s advisable to only do it below 30mph.
You’re not allowed to undertake, but again I’d say it’s a question of common sense really. 😉👍
Congratulations
Quality review, picking my 1290 up next week and hoping after your comparison that I’m not missing out on the GS🤭
The KTM is a LOT of fun Kev, but from what I’ve tried of the new 1250GS, the new 1250 engine is a huge step upwards in the hooligan states for BMW 😬
Hi Bruce I wonder if I could ask you a question please ?We are currently touring The Pyrenees and Picos and my smart phone I’m using for the Sat Nav keeps overheating and shutting down . I’m seriously considering purchasing a Garmin or TomTom, with your touring experience which would you pick please? Many thanks Trev
If you have this bike the TomTom fits perfectly on it
@@cport955 Hi Colin many thanks for your reply. Have you fitted a TomTom rider on to a ZX10R?
Trevor Brandon no I haven’t but I have fitted one to a sports bike using a RAM mount on the clip on
...try a delcevic muffler...sounds so good with my 1190....
I traded my 1290 S for a GS. When I stacked up the pro's and con's the GS had it. Comfort..GS, stability at speed... GS, handling... GS, build quality.... GS. fun factor.... KTM, motor... KTM, noise... KTM. It was the skipping front end about...erm.... high speed, and the heat from under the stupidly uncomfortable seat that killed it for me. Having said that, I still have a little place in my heart for KTM now :)
I’m pretty much exactly where you are with it David, that sums up my thoughts perfectly 👍
Great review Thanks. Been thinking comparing this beast against a GSA 1250 A for next bike. Hard choice but GSA still first choice. Not easy on bike choices here in Philippines.
Hi Sierra,
Yes I think I’d also go for the BMW too, but this KTM is a LOT of fun 👍
No comparison my freind the 1250 wins every day,
@@backwheelbob46rr the 1250 would be nice but the ktm would kick it's ass in power and offroad handling. It's hard to imagine anyone would argue with those facts.
I've owned R1200GSA, ST1200 Super Tenere and KTM1190 Adv R. Also have ridden 1290. Buy a GS if you want just don't pretend they are in the same power league...
Aye that’s true, the KTM definitely has more power and date I say it, it’s the more fun bike to ride, but you won’t lose the GS, and the GS is certainly the more refined package.
I have never ridden a v-twin, how does it feel compared to in i-4 of same size?
Totally different - twins have loads more power/torque low down but tend to top out early, whereas inline 4’s traditionally are quite revv’y and the power and doesn’t usually kick in until upwards of 8k revs - although newer ones are developing better low down output.
I'm new to this street bike scene, copious amounts of dirt, and I rode tons of KTM (currently own 2019 Husky 701 enduro), never had any issues with them but the internet sure seems full of people screaming they suck. Any idea on what they're talking about?
Which bike do you mean Gil?
Teapot one are you Scottish?
This bike I would love to have, but the triumph 765 and the pain gale v2 or the R9T are too much of a temptation right now.
Yes bud, I am Scottish 👍
Nice 1 Bruce
👍
Hi Bruce, how is Helga? Did you get your brakes done?
Helga is great ta. I had a wee issue where she wasn’t idling very well on initial start up, and it turns out this was a small air leak which has been sorted and she now runs beautifully!
I had new brake discs fitted at around 36,000 miles 👍
Why would you take the GS over this bike? Im in the market now, just researching, but Im leaning towards the KTM. Havent ridden either yet.
Smoother ride, less maintenance, better dealer network, lower centre of gravity so handles differently - all personal choice really
Maybe a bit late, just found this video. A quick note, the KTM Power parts comfort seat is a lot, lot better. I bought the heated version for mine and it works a treat. It adds about 15mm to the ride height, but well worth it.
Agree 100% with your rant
Hi Bruce, great video and great bike; I test rode one last year and agree with all your comments, but still prefer the GSA. I notice that you ride through bus lanes; could you please clarify the legality of this, and cycle lanes, as I was always under the impression motorcycles couldn’t use them unless there was a sign indicating permission. Thanks Bruce and look forward to the next instalment. Cheers, Andy.
Hi Andy,
Glad you’ve enjoyed the vid and yeah it’s a great bike, loads of fun.
Re bus lanes, in London as long as the sign says you can ride in them, then bud lanes are fine. You have to be careful though as some boroughs, luke Lambeth, don’t allow it.
Cycle lanes? No I don’t ride in them, but I do occasionally go into the cycle box at traffic lights if I know the lights are just away to change etc. Legally you are not supposed to go into them, but in London you just won’t get anywhere unless you take advantage of what a bike offers 😉
teapotone Thanks for the clarification Bruce; living out here in the Shires is a little different, so I’ll continue as I have been. On another note, I’m looking to change my 1200 GSA for a 1250 GSA, so will let you know how that goes. Was in the Picos last week and the 1200 performed magnificently on those awesome roads; the 1250 should be even better😃
@@andrewtofts7884 Keep your 1200...I did the same bought a 1250.....had electrical, caliper issues..chopped for 1290 ...so much better!
I was torn between this bike and the 1250 gs a. I decided on the beemer, and I do not regret it. Although I loved this bike when I tried it, I just think that everything on the beemer, a part from the enginepower, is just one or more notches better. But this is not a bad bike by any means
lovely machine. KTM make character machines. Full of character. Are you off to look after Boris?
Not at the moment bud, work has taken a weird turn for the foreseeable?
All will become clear in the next vid 👍
Dude you must be soundest copper in London I bet every biker you pull over gets a good stern talking-to 👍👍👍👍 stay safe in work 👍👍👍
Ha Ha thanks Aaron, that means a lot bud.
Stay safe 👍
This vid looks very familiar!!
Any ideas on how to fix the heat issue?
Stand up and go faster 😉🤣
I think it’s just a hot engine Bob, it’s a known ‘trait’ tbh.
👍
Fit the fuel dongles and remove the sas.
Try wings seat cooler from wings.si
The downside to having that much power is the rear tire replacement expense. Tires ain't cheap. I'm sure it's worth it, though.
Absolutely. But then biking isn’t a cheap ‘hobby’ or more of transport is it.
Fun comes at a price, and it gets steeper with an increasing grin factor with the SA 😉👍
What’s your height ? I’m 6’5” and considering this
I’m 6’3” and around 20 stone
teapotone awesome , thanks for the reply
It only takes one hand to adjust wind screen on the fly, super easy
I think you are a BMW guy ! Nothing wrong but as a journalist you can't be. i love my 1250GSA
No wobble in 15000 Miles but I have the short windscreen from the 1290 SAR. Maybe its the screen
That’s a possibility, but I think it may also have something to do with tyre choice maybe? I had the Pirelli Scorpion’s on I believe.
I’ve had a few people contact me saying they also had front end wobble though?
I also have the Scorpion trail 2 on it.
Had it on the 1290 SAR and now on the SAS.
Maybe fault in the tyres, but most likely the screen.
I ride in comfort mode all the time
2 reasons:
1 KTM themself say it’s the best mode 😄
2 It increases the damping with increasing speed or when detecting the roadsurface needs more damping. Its not like first gen ESA , where Comfort meant the suspension got out of shape and Sportmode was too hard.
When you really ride hard on bad surface ( which I never do ofcourse, but I have a friend who does) comfortmode came out on top. 😉👍🏻
My Ktm shakes it’s head a bit if the tyre pressures are too high.
It’s the Pirelli’s. I swapped to Contis and they were miles better. Perfectly stable at 130 on the autobahn with full luggage on. With the OEM tyres I could get the traction control to kick in in 4th in the Dolomites, no such issues with the Contis
Colin Porteous This baffles me; had no such issues with the pirellis all the way up to top speed, conti’s came out on top in a recent review of Motorradonline.
Pirellis second place, with no mention of headshake issues.🤔
Like the look of it, but the heat, fork dive, and front end shake put me off.👎Great review, thank you.👍👍
Best regards from Saudi ✌️
Thank you bud, all the best to you too 👍
It's a nice to look at it but didn't like the view from top. Looks cheap comparing to the German and steering is much shorter.
Had the privilege of test riding the '17 1290 sa for 4hrs (city traffic, hwy & mountain twisties (no off-road)). The bike was phenomenal. The power.....sublime. Decided at that time to go with the '18 1200 gsa as I couldn't get past the elevated engine heat & chain maintenance. Whilst I can truly appreciate some "hot buns" just not my own. Otherwise a spectacular machine. tp1 a spot-on review ✌️✌️
Thanks bud 👍
The way you described the heat on your legs would be a deal breaker for me
I currently own a 2016 super adventure T and live in Phoenix, AZ. So it gets hot out and the heat has never really bothered me....All of these large bore, high HP sportbikes throw quite a bit of heat.
Took one out yesterday and yes, hot engine. Epic engine and gearbox but in no way way better than my GSA R1200 Triple Black. Too much vibration, plank of a seat and exposed to the elements. No satnav options, KTM missed an opportunity with both Tom Tom and Garmin. Just completed a 3000 mile trip to Italy through 6 countries on my Beemer, the KTM would not have been as enjoyable a ride. Nice post though matey.
Cheers bud, yep I totally agree with the comfort issue, but I found that I actually looked forward to getting on the KTM more than the GS - well at least for the first half hour or so! 😉👍
KTM Powerparts seat is cheap and works. I believe you CAN link maps to the TFT. I just clamp my iPhone to the bars, though. Best gearbox I ever rode on 20-some bikes. Vibrates a bit at/over 8000. By then any GS is a speck in your mirror. Just short shift it and lug it down to 2000 RPM's even--smooth as glass. Similarly--I rode YOUR bike for a bit. With wife. SHE was like: BORING. But wife doesn't mind the KTM 3rd gear throttle wheelies either so maybe she is just a wild child. Lucky me. Then there is price. In USA--KTM is about $3000-5000 cheaper.....
@@tomtraynor5384 Thanks for the reply. I was following a mate on his KTM a couple of weeks ago across the Austrian/Swiss/Italian Alps and found it hard to keep up. That's what made me take out a demonstrator when I got back home. The refinement of the BMW though is far superior to the KTM but you do pay for it.
Powerparts seat is all you need, I've done 3000 mile trips on mine several times with no problems
Do you still have this bike? How was it?
No not was just a press bike loan to do a review.
I’ve had the newest SA S since this one, loads better
@@teapotone thank you for your response mate
They've got their priorities set. In the US the revenue a town receives by way of ticketing speeders is spent on whatever the township wants. It's a stealth tax and their priorities favor collecting that tax above serving the public. I doubt the police officers enjoy collecting those taxes over stopping crime, but the boss man says go get the cash!
Bruce I have to totally agree about the perceived syndicalism of policing policies where those who have had their home violated are ignored yet manpower is found to ticket motorists for offences where no one gets hurt.
The thing that gets me is that good folk like you join the cops to make a difference to folks lives in spite of the risks yet get screwed over by the politicians and brass to take the least cost option to make up the statistics.
The country has lost the plot...
Cynicism not syndicalism
Absolutely agree with you 👍
Is Big Andy, Andy O? If yes I used to work with him!
Yes mate that’s the very one 👍
@@teapotone Haha, I work with another one of your pals now Barry G! Small world!
The lane splitting you folks do is amazing. I ride a K1300GT and in the US land splitting, except for a few states, is not legal. It seems the car drivers are a bit more courteous towards, or more cooperative with motorcycles in your home town
than we are here. In my upper midwest town you would have ended up in the hospital way before you finished this video not because of your driving, but because of our buses, pedestrians, cars that just wouldn't help you out. Fun to watch you ride
Cheers Bruce, yes you wouldn’t get anywhere in London on a bike if you didn’t filter, but it can be fraught with danger if you’re not careful with it 👍
If you think the KTM gets warm, wait until you try the Panigale V4. Roasted nuts anyone
Would love to try a V4 out ❤️👍
@@teapotone do it :)
Hi TP
Whilst riding my Africa Twin Adventure sports last Sunday I stood up to stretch my legs, was stood for about 15 seconds and without noticing I rode passed a Police car sat in a side turning, they immediately followed me and then pulled me over and told me they were going to nick me for firstly dangerous riding firstly, I tried to explain that its not dangerous and that all offroaders use this method as it centralised the weight etc ect they then went on to tell me that no matter what its illegal and told me that I was being reported for driving without due care and attention !!
I wonder if you could shed some light on this as I didnt think it was illegal to stand up whilst riding, I see many other riders do this especially in our group where we have a few riders who could be described as slightly age impaired
Cheers mate
Rob
Rob I’ve never ever heard that before - did they actually report you then for that offence?
If they did I’d be getting a good solicitor and take it all the way to court as it’s ridiculous in my opinion!

@@teapotone its a big lump of bike to loose your off road cherry on. 😂🍒
The KTM speed is not a smidgent faster than the GS, it's night and day faster. I'm surprised that this reviewer didn't even know if it was at the twin or not. I own a KTM 1290 superventure S, and I can tell you it's very refined and it's a lot more motorcycle for the money. I would argue that the LC8 engine is one of the greatest engines ever put into a motorcycle frame. If you want a joyride and a great adventure go with the KTM. You'll get there with comfort and a smile on your face.
