Fun fact. 10 years ago, Hangman was in The Dark Knight Rises as a stock broker. He left that job to become a pilot because Maverick was his hero.
haha yea when I first saw this I thought Ive seen him in another movie. Looked him up and it was TDKR. I only vaguely remember because I watched that way too many times back then.
Oh shit that’s where he’s from I swear he looked familiar
Even funner fact. People that make jokes about how two characters from different movies are the same people have no originality.
He was also in Hidden Figures as John Glenn. So he has had some flying experience 😜
Fun Fact For Real:
This is the second Tom Cruise film to rip off Independence Day.
'Oblivion'.
That film also stole from Wrath of Khan AND The Dark Knight.
While ID4 repackaged the Star Wars finale with a sacrificial CROP-DUSTER in-place of heroic FARM BOY
I don't actually think Hangman was an egotistic jerk by nature, but by purpose. He's very like Maverick in that sense - he sort of pushes people's buttons, in order to push them to be better. That's how I perceived his character from the very start. Hell, one might even say his arrogance is a defense mechanism. That small, but loaded "Give 'em hell" was very telling. The "He's not ready for this mission, you know I'm right," said with his signature smirk and bravado, as if to tell Maverick "send me instead, don't send him to die, I'm reckless just like you." His frown when Rooster was chosen, I don't perceive it as disappointment, but as worry. The absolutely devastated and terrified look on his face when Dagger 1 and 2 were hit, the hopelessness when he wasn't allowed to go after them. The little happy cheer he did when Rooster hit the target...
FACTS!!!! YOU NAILED IT!!!!
Let me put it this way.
There is a certain nut size requirement for someone to strap 2 of the world's largest blowtorches to their asses, with several more tons of explosives on top of that, and then take those weapons and themselves up to 40'000, to throw said weapons at people who are more than happy to sling similar weapons right back at you.
There are certain jobs that require arrogance. Fighter pilot is definitely one of them. Firefighter is another. If you don't have a big brass pair, (Including the ladies) You are not going to be able to handle the job, period.
I disagree but not for the reason you think. He's not like Maverick at all. Mav _was_ an egotistical jerk -- a hotshot Navy aviator at the absolute bleeding edge of air combat kinda needs to be -- but he grew out of it. Hangman on the other hand is much more like Iceman. He's not out there with something to prove like Rooster, he already knows how capable he is. So when he notices the tension between Maverick and Rooster, he's at first curious but later becomes openly concerned that Rooster is letting his personal hatred impact the success of the team. And Hangman doesn't hate Rooster's guts, but he's willing to rile up Rooster to make sure Rooster learns that he's endangering everybody else with his vendetta. Hangman's ultimately looking out for the team the same way Iceman was but he doesn't mind being a bit of a cunt about it. That just comes with the territory of being a supersonic superman.
@@dylanwight5764 oh, I agree, that's why I said "in that sense." Jake is like a combination of both - the love child of Mav and Ice 😂
I thought he was really upset that he wasn’t chosen for the mission but sucked it up and gave rooster his blessing
hangman's character was well written and acted. he was cocky but he had the skills to back it up. He wasn't a team player but was there when you need him. I hope that if they do a spinoff or another movie, Maverick isn't in it and they use the same level of care that they did with this movie to keep the quality. I would like TC to proactively ensure it retains quality.
it's very possible considering the movie is just smashing records and no doubt will continue to as it goes on dvd and bluray, not to mention the november release should be pretty good. I would love to see Hangman,Rooster and this crew as a fighter wing in another movie, question is, can it still be fun and interesting without the intense maverick, I think so :)
If they do another T.G. it should be with Duke & Viper because Viper told maverick in the original T.G. the only reason he (Viper) was Top Gun was because Duke wasn’t around to Wax him in a Dog Fight.
Na you people are dumb af. Hangman is a pound world ICEMAN.
The way this movie was shot was enough to warrant a sequel. No matter the plot or actors in it.
There won't be a sequel. The use of miliary images, toxic masculinity and the flag will cause harm across a wide swath of America. Jets cannot be powered in a non carbon producing way. In 2035 modern jets and airliners will be outlawed. F you all...seriously. Godbless those who serve. You are the thin line between humanity and insanity.
Man, they need to make a spinoff with Hangman he's literally young Mav...
seeing Hangman being confident to his own actions during training does resembles the young mav
FACTS!!!!!
He's young Iceman. But either way, yes please.
Do you not know what 'literally' means? He's not literally young Mav, idiot.
For the purposes of the first half of the film, he's like an "evil" Maverick
The music was terrific. It was funereal and really gave the impression that Mav and Rooster were toast.
whats the name of the music?
"I'm Sorry Goose.".... I'm not crying you're crying!
What an awesome redemption arc for Hangman!!!! Such a great movie!
Redemption from what exactly
he was a pretty stupid character. character development maybe?
Cavalier attitude, perhaps?
@@ashcadiang Definitely character development, went from arrogant bully to compassionate pilot. And hot dang is Glen Powell talented at acting.
@@gofurmia6997 from being someone who'd leave a teammate to die to someone who has their back.
Nobody has noticed that Maverick made no attempt to eject. He would die with Goose's son before abandoning him to save himself. That is what makes this scene powerful.
Yeah I noticed that to. It made me a little emotional seeing that. And him apologizing to Goose.
Also because I'm pretty sure the F14A (perhaps all) didn't have ejection handle loops above the pilots seat, just the RIOs seat
@@breckfoster767 at 0:26 you can clearly see the ejection handles above Maverick’s head
That's because he's not sitting in an F14 lol.
I'm about 99% sure that's originally why Goose punched out of the F14 and not Maverick, he simply can't.
Also I'm pretty sure the RIOs ejection handles eject both seats, not just the RIO.
Which makes sense the RIO does the ejecting while the pilot maneuvers the bird as long as possible
@@breckfoster767the tomcat jas dual ejection seats for each pilot
I thought they were going to kill maverick’s character twice in this movie but I’m glad they didn’t and god bless Val Kilmer 🙏 this movie totally kicked ass
The feels when Maverick said sorry to Goose
Everything about this movie is such a crowd pleaser.
One of the great things about this scene is the subtle evolution of hangman’s character. At the beginning of the film he told rooster “I am good. Im very good. In fact I am too good to be true.” Throughout the rest of the film he gets bested again and again by Maverick. Now, he only says “I am good. Im very good.” and abandons the rest, now knowing that he still has things to learn
“Bested again and again”? Not sure we watched the same film.
Hangman is basically Maverick in the first movie.
To me he is more Ice than Mav.
Hangman embodies Maverick’s cocky attitude and Iceman’s by-the-book behavior.
@@samuelwitwicky3900 Ice was plenty cocky as well.

The music from the the first one in the back ground is hits the feels and you can feel the desperation of the situation like this is the last hope to safe them both.
Hangman is great character writing. Hints of Iceman in there.
Iceman? He has maverick from the original all over him. Very good pilot, giant ego. Iceman was a team player.

Fun fact in real life The face curtain safety was still up. That's why he couldn't pull it down. You can see it in some of the scenes. Real tomcat maintainers can spot this

Great film. I really enjoyed it.
Yes, It is truly another master piece by tom cruise.
I love how Hangman's missile blows up the fighter and the missile it just launched. Is that two kills?
SPLASH 1.25!
Actually, when you launch a "Fox 1" - a semi-active radar guided missile - , it needs the input from the plane's computer to stick on target. Once the plane blow up, that input is broken and so the missile that has been launched. Consequentially it explode as weel.
I would say that, for his timing, we could give him a splash 1.25! :D

When your faced to do a mission that may get you killed such as the mission maverick went on in this movie I dont think you would be pissed that you don't get chosen but rather trust that the right people were chosen for the mission. Wise words from hangman
30mm cannon rounds apparently only scratch the surface.
classic hollywood
@RubiiX it would still do some severe damage, reason why air to air missiles use shrapnel, the explosion spreads the shrapnel, hitting the plane. but who cares if its realistic or not, top gun maverick is about fun and thrills not showing realism about aviation
This comment 👌🏾 😄😄🤣🤣
If this was accurate it would be kinda dull.
30mm? that's an SU-57, not an A-10, smart guy.
A bit of inconsistency in the scene that both F14 and Su57 were going vertical, but when Su57 exploded, that Su57 and Hangman's F18 was mostly in level flight.
They weren’t vertical. And Hangman took the SU-57 down from a higher altitude, you can see his missile going downwards.
I guess that fifth generation fighter that got attacked doesn’t have radar
I always saw hangman as the equivalent of Iceman
Come on. Who could forget Chad Radwell from Scream Queens?
Hangman: This is a stock exchange, there is no money you can steal.
Hangman In the end was new iceman, carried the same energy
This F 14 couldn't land in on that carrier.
Must have been a flashback, F14's. RIP ( except for those few Iranian lost airframes. Oh, well. They cant get replacement parts for em' )
Then how come they still flying ?
Iranians made the spareparts theirselves.
The Iranians have an estimated 24 still flying. Well 23 if you count this one they stole, lol.
They cannibalize the f-14's they have that are not airworthy.
what the hack ?You mean su-57 doesn't have missle warning system or rader. It's 5th gen. Or probably short back rader but come on.Or mistakenly assume hangman as his wingman.
The logo on the F14 is different than that of the one they took off from the hanger with.
The Su-57 only carries about 150 rounds. That bird should already be out of ammo after that first spray-and-pray. ;)
The Su57 also has advanced detection systems. That bird should have detected the F18, the missile lock, the missile itself and maneuvered and engaged hangman.
@@krishanuphukan80 exactly. No way it could not have detected its missile lock.

Look at Rooster’s helmet. It say’s ROOST-ER. As in E.R. Anthony Edwards TV show.
Su 57 is so SCARY!!!!
Maybe against a F14, can it hang with a Raptor? Hopefully we never finds out.
Only in a movie. Just wait 'till Russia deploys them in large-scaled mission.
@@bramantyoprahoro7284 they don't have enough SU-57 for anything large scale. haven't a single 1 in ukraine.
@@verliebt3465 Exactly for now. I'm talking about the future procurement.
Hangman was the Maverick to Rooster’s Iceman
I guess hangman is the new Maverick
The way this scene could have been realistic/more entertaining was that the Su57 detects the missile and radar lock, performs evasive maneuvers and sees 2-4 F18s firing towards him. They engage in a dogfight while the f14 observes from a distance and the Su57 enters into a dogfight in a 1v4 eventually being shot down by Hangman after an intense fight.
Later realising Maverick won a 1v1 with one of these monsters.
I mean pretty sure that su 57 pilot was just strught up toying with him. No terrain for cover and yet still somehow missing his shots. Random bursts of cannon fire the scare them, and how slowly he is locking the f14 probably means he's totally toying with Mav. And when he's in the zone playing with his food he prob didn't notice the 20 warning that his radar is giving him. Like someone saying not now to a alarm clock except this time with much worse consequences.
Wow, speaking of 'Goldblum', it just occurred to me how in 'Thor: Ragnarok'...
Thor, Bruce and Valkyrie SPEED towards 'the Devils Anus' in The Grandmaster's own vehicle.
Of course, mirroring the alien craft escape from the mothership in ID4 with 'The Grandmaster' and 'King Richard' onboard fleeing hateful aliens. 🤣
Back on Earth, Steve Hillard had promised "Fireworks".
The Grandmaster's vehicle came equipped with Birthday FIREWORKS!
Hangman is the new Ice Man. Exceptional timing. Wouldn’t the 5th gen aircraft detect the long on?
I'm thinking that the Su-57 didn't detect the missile fast enough. The reason being is that going over 500-700 knots and launching the missile maybe 1-5 Miles away and the speed of the missile and the F-18 depends if the Su-57 would be able to dodge the missile but since that was unlikely the Su-57 probably got the missile warning right when he was launching his own missile but didn't have time to avoid it.
Hangman is a cocky SOB.
But he just backed everything up. Continue to be cocky sir!
Where was rooster's co pilot when he saved maverick?
Haven’t seen the movie yet, am told the flying is awesome, storyline, well not so much 😩
Just seen a few clips on youtube, but didn’t Mav’s undercarriage get torn off in the takeoff from the taxi way?
Firstly, I would have thought an impact like that would have had severe repercussions on the flight characteristics of a jet struggling to gain altitude and secondly “see you back on deck” might make landing somewhat problematic?
Maybe I saw it incorrectly 🤷♂️
And, hey, it’s just a movie! 😜
If you mean the front gear, Yes it did. Later when he was landing on the Aircraft Carrier it showed he had no landing gear and that the Flight Deck Crew had to get the capture net, or whatever it is called. But of course, He had to do his amazing buzzing the tower before he landed.
No, you don't need altitude. Navy ejection seats are zero-zero: Zero altitude, zero speed for safe ejection. All you have to do is be level. This is so a pilot/aircrew can eject while onboard a carrier if an engine blows while they're waiting for a catshot.
maverick went up so the enemy couldn’t lock on quicker
that wasnt a navy F14. they stole it from a land base
@@verliebt3465 It would still have the zero-zero ejection seat that came standard in all Tomcats in the 1970s/80s.
u want the F14 lock on by the su47 immediately? u want maverick ejected with that horizontal airspeed? and touch down to the sea within a short period? while the F14 was still capable to pulling up?
How can SU 57 be called 5 gen if it shows up on the aircraft radar?
SU 57 didn't come to know of the lock on it?
SU-57 has no missiles warning system?
Here are some AMAZINGLY FUN FACTS:
1) Anthony Edwards sat directly behind Eric Stoltz during a gymnasium sequence in 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High', where Stoltz folded then tossed a paper airplane at a cheerleader.
2) Eric Stoltz did just enough work on 'Back to the Future', for his HAND to remain in the film after he was "Washed-Out".

Yeah, M. Damon and B. Affleck earned their Oscars.

Sure do love the SU-57 shooting 5.56mm instead of 30mm
only thing i don't like here is... the cannon hits. They treated them and made them look like .50 cal hits... saw 4-5 rounds stitch across the back ripping up skin.
the only problem is, they aren't .50 cal, or even 20mm... those are 30mm High explosive incendiary tracers. the same size as fired by the A-10. 30×165mm (vs 30x173 for the a-10) do insane damage with each hit. Each one of those would have hit, punched in a bit then exploded leaving a football sized hole in the skin ripping the engine apart and spreading incendiary material inside the hull where it would burn through spars, wires, melt the skin on the bottom of the aircraft and worse.
Watched this a few times at the cinema and I kept thinking why did Mav not command both seats to eject from the front?
Then I realised he might have tried to ram the fighter
After Rooster failed to eject he realized they hadn't armed the ejection seats.
@@katherineberger6329 exactly my thoughts allthough that could still be done since it's on top of the seat.
@@bjrnchrstn Maybe. Those straps might get in the way, though. And with no time to do it…
@@katherineberger6329 What I meant is, the switch to command both seats to eject is by the pilot's right hand - takes half a second to move and toggle it.
I have this theory he might have commanded either both to eject or triggered Rooster's and then rammed the 5th Gen so he was safe
(remember, they both thought at the time the seats were hot)
@@Trek001 OK. We are actually talking about separate switches. The ejection seats are not armed - rooster didn’t arm them, because he’s never flown on an F 14 before.
