While the inside of this place makes you dream away to a European palace, it is in fact, located on a rolling 42-acre estate in the United States.
This astounding manor was built in 1898 for Philadelphia businessman William. L. Elkins, designed by architect Horace Trumbauer. The 45-room mansion was built in the style of the Italian High Renaissance, and is decorated with Gilded Age interiors and neoclassical architecture. It speaks to a time when Philadelphia’s utility magnates treated themselves like royalty and articulated their accomplishments in the grandeur of their manors.
And that grandeur is still present today: this historic manor has beauty throughout every detail of the space. The interior was designed by esteemed French interior designers Allard et Fils, with beautiful frescoed ceilings, carved panels, marble columns, and breathtaking crystal chandeliers. The rooms are adorned with gold leafing and exquisite gilded molding.
In 1932, the grandson of the family, William H. Elkins, sold the Elstowe manor property to the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine de' Ricci, that operated the building as a women's religious retreat for 75 years.
The sisters sold the property to Landmark Developers in August of 2019 who planned to turn the property into a boutique hotel. But that plan did not move beyond its proposal stage.
In point of fact, Elstowe manor is re-opening its doors again this Spring, and the remarkable property will be hosting events, and have overnight accommodations for wedding guests on the grounds.
Today we’ll show you one last insight into this place in a state of desolation, as we explored this wonderful historic jewel in 2021, right before renovation started.

Americas gilded age. It produced some of the most magnificent buildings in our short history. Thank you for the tour of this gorgeous place.
It truly did! You are most welcome, Jennifer 🙏🏼😊
If I am amazed by all the beauty of this palace, I wonder how it felt to live in there with all the furniture: like a tale!!!
If this place still had its original furniture it would have been even more incredible 😍
Your best find ever ! I really can't believe that such an amazing building isn't locked up properly ! Thank you so much for sharing this place with us. It is fantastic that mansion is reused again, but i hope they keep its historical charme. I can't even imagine how tremendously rich the former owner was and sadly this stunning mansion is just affordable for the rich again. Average people can't never stay in that building or even take one step into it. Many greetings from Austria.
Thank you so much Ursula! This was definitely one for the books. It was a great pleasure to capture and share this place and I’m very happy to hear how much you enjoyed it. Greetings back from the Netherlands!
Many thanks for your reaction on my comment. I really appreaciate what you are doing and you are my favorite Explorers. I could never do it because I am too scared to get caught by the police ! I' m also afraid of injuries and the black mold you're so often confronted with.
Hello guys from Italy. It's a pity that places like this were abandoned
Hi...the taxes, utilities and maintenance are usually out of reach for most
@@gillianbarker317 yes i know that..that's sad
Hi Elmin, It truly is! But happy to hear this place will get a new life very soon. Thanks for watching as always! 😊
Yes they ran out of funds so in the mean time they are working on funds today to put this back on map.:)They are restoring this place to a Hotel and yes alarms are on other buildings.
@@barbaragravely920 thanks, that's a really good news
Hello maureno! You had great explorers but this is your ultimate one! You never would have thought it was in the US
Hi Arthur! Thanks a bunch for those kind words. Yes, this place was a total surprise for us as well in the United States! :D
@@Explomo you all haven't been around too much. One of the most striking is Biltmore. I think there are place that used to be beautiful, but are hidden here. We have too many that would destroy them. Sad, but true!
Breathtaking exploration again Mo
Glad you liked it so much Dolores! Thanks for coming along 😊
Thank you for the before images...so glad it was saved and not dilapidated through vandalism and neglect. What a jewel!
For future visits to America, if you visit the "main library" in most bigger cities, you might be able to view copies of blue prints for massive historically important properties like this. It would tell you the purpose of the rooms. Great video.
Thank you for watching and also the great tip! We did found out about the purpose of some rooms and added this as a caption in the video
I’m so glad it’s being used an not going to be left to decay .It’s stunning beautiful ,it’s incredible inside lv Ann uk 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧❤️❤️❤️
Hello Explomo! Thank you for sharing the Elkins Manor with the world. I formerly lived in the Philadelphia Area and was not aware of this amazing building. Many beautiful and historic buildings exist in the Greater Philadelphia Area. Again, thank you so very much for sharing this amazing building!
It’s our great pleasure Ann! Thanks so much for watching and your appreciation 😊
Amazing and incredible! Hard to believe it's in Philadelphia and not Italy or France. Great that it is going to have another life! Great job 🥰
Thanks a lot Marilyn!! 😊❤️
Hi Maureno! Lovely to see you here again! Wonderful work!❤ This exploration is breathtaking ❤
Thank you so much Celia! ❤️
What an incredibly beautiful building! It really does feel like it belongs in Europe.
I'm also surprised that such a massive home only had 7 bedrooms. But oh my gosh, when renovations are completed this is going to be a real gem. I'm so glad it's being brought back to life.
Like some homes in Nova Scotia that were left to the Nuns (I would visit them with my Grandmother) I felt they were wasted on the Nuns; the homes I'm referring to in Nova Scotia weren't even close to being this spectacular though. I felt the same about this property but I believe it was done so for taxation reasons. Churches always get a break, yet if it weren't for a religious order living here, I imagine it would have fallen to the ground.
I can see weddings being held here; imagine a Bride walking down that magnificent staircase?
I'm still stunned to see such a gem in the US.
I remember when I was a teenager, I visited a family friend in Savannah, Georgia and to me it was the grandest place I've ever been to.
I hope the integrity of the building will be left intact and not too modernized.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful place. It really took my breath away.
Cheers, Maureno. 🥰
You are so very welcome as always Janice! Thanks for your wonderful comment and watching again ❤️
This is amazing and gorgeous! Always love and look forward to watching ur exquisitely done explores! BRAVO MAURENO!!!
💯💯💯🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🔥🔥👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🤩😍🤠👋🏼
Thank you so much Robin! Miss you. Best wishes to you and Richard 😊❤️
Cool place, and it's in my neck of the woods. I grew up in Europe until 1969. This place reminds me of castles in Italy, too. I hope they get the correct workers 'artists' to do the remodel. Please! don't mess it up!!
I hope they do too but I think they surely did seeing the more recent photos after renovation of this place. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Maureno
That place was amazing and im glad someone is going to re do it It seems to not in to bad of shape
Fireman 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks a lot for watching again we’re also very happy the place will get a new life soon! :)

SOOO BEAUTIFUL!! I'm thrilled that it is being saved!! Another wonderful video!!!
You deserve a tv show, a series on netflix or amazon, your videos, your edits are really incredible! You are the best my brother.
Wow, wow, wow, what a place. So beautiful and elegant. I can just see the Victorian ladies with their ballgowns on dancing 💃 the night away, especially in that grand ball room. Thank you for sharing it was amazing 👏
one of the best places in north america ive seen or the best ever . being built so well and it looks amazing , the tile and stone and marble and wood is top quality ect and the artwork
This place truly is something special. Thanks for watching Paul! 🙏🏼
I love the gilded age. They had gorgeous mansions durring this era!!!! The Vanderbuilts, Rockerfellows, (spelling?) etc. Thank you for coming to the U.S,A. Love you and all your videos, which I've mentioned several times before. God Bless and Be Safe. CATHY, MANSFIELD,OHIO.
Yes. Truly incredible mansions where built in this period and we are so keen to hve been able to explore one of them! Thank you so much and god bless you too. Much love❤️🙏🏼🙌🏼
ABSOLUTELY JAW DROPPINGLY GORGEOUS, AND I AM SO GLAD THAT THIS GREAT LADY IS BEING RESTORED AND REPURPOSED VERSUS TORN DOWN AND TURNED INTO UGLY HOMES OR WHATEVER THEY HAD PLANNED. CRAFTSMANSHIP LIKE THIS NO LONGER EXISTS! THANKS FOR SHARING AND LOOKING FORWARD TO MORE!
That is good news to know that that place is getting a new life instead of torn down
Fabulous, love coming around with you as always lv Ann uk 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧❤️❤️❤️
Thanks so much Ann you’re always very welcome much love back to you!

''Today we’ll show you one last insight into this place in a state of desolation, as we explored this wonderful historic jewel in 2021, right before renovation started.'' as in your description.
Why did you wait so long posting this amazing video? Thanks
One of our main morals in this hobby is to preserve those (partly unsecured) abandoned sites as much as we can. That’s why we decided to keep our material offline until we heard the building is repurposed. We don’t want to attract any vandals/thiefs as long as we know the place is still open to public and not monitored. That’s why we decided to publish it now nearly 2 years later. And in fact, it is a new video since it is the first time we publish something of this place!
@@Explomo Great answer! thanks. i respect that very much. Great attitude. It must have been difficult to wait untill now with publishing.
@@SXMSXMSXM Thanks for understanding! It’s always difficult to keep something on hold of which you know it’s great, but the main priority is to preserve those places!
Wow! This is incredible stunning place, hard to believe it is in USA, love historical and European architecture inside the building, in the main building every room look different and unique, grant hall is stunning with marble architecture, hard to believe that this place was owned by one person back in the day, thank you for sharing
Most welcome! Thanks a lot for watching & commenting 🙌🏼😊
It looks like they are taking out the partitions to make the rooms larger. They will likely replace beams in the ceilings for structural reinforcement to facilitating larger weddings and special occasion events. It doesn’t look like a mess to me. It looks like the beginning of someone’s vision of the reconstruction and renovation. What a cool job it would be to help restore this beautiful building.
Absolutely! Can’t wait to see the final end result.
Maureno this was majestic, it’s gonna make a beautiful resort…didn’t think I’d see anymore US videos, thank you for sharing ❤hope all is well & you have some good memories of the USA…Sincerely Jill
We still have a few more places and then the US videos will be over. Thank you!! ❤️
The manor part is utterly magnificent very glad it is being restored. Really enjoyed it Maureno
É maravilhoso vê cada detalhes desse lugar MAGNÍFICO 👏👏👏👏👏
Wow. I live about 20 minutes from this mansion and never really noticed it. I knew it was a convent but there was a high wall around it. Great explore. Thank you Maureno ❤
Oh wow! Can’t believe you didn’t knew about it. Thank you so much!!
I loved the gold guilding, the beautiful fireplace in the breakfast room and the frescoes on the ceilings x
Yeah the frescoed ceilings are magical! 😍
Talk about “gilded age!” Magnificent. I was surprised to see so much opulence melded with institutional. Thank you for bringing us along! ❤
Thanks so much for sharing this absolutely incredible Palace here in the USA. I too loved seeing all of the woodwork there is there. To that when it was originally constructed they did all of those carvings by hand. I love watching all of the amazing places you explore. It’s something I would have wanted to do when I was young. Back then I just never had any opportunity to do so. If I would have had a friend like you I would have been doing all of the same things. I’m so glad you came to this palace not knowing that the doors when have been open for you and the other explorers to have the whole place to see. I completely agree with you this palace is going to once again be an incredible place to see with people living and enjoying it’s opulence state again. Looking forward to seeing what your next place in the US is. I also would have loved seeing it with all of the antiques I’m sure were once in there. Take care and be safe 😊
You are so very welcome Mary! Thanks a lot for your wonderful comment and support. Take care too and see you at the next one. ❤️

What a beauty! I am glad that it will be used again for people to visit and admire. Thanks for the adventure and see you on the next one.
Stunning. Loved it and so happy to know the building with be brought back to its former glory. Your videos are amazing Explomo.

That’s amazing to hear from you Mary! Take care as well and have a blessed day! Thank you 😊❤️
Hi explomo I love your videos keep up the good work❤
That’s great to hear Jennifer we will surely keep it up, thanks to you for the support 😊
A stunning place! I also saw Bro's of Decay's tour of this same manor, and I love how you guys can capture the same place from totally different perspectives. In some ways, it's like looking at a different place. I also saw the tour of Lynnewood Hall, and I can honestly say I almost favor the architectural style of this manor a little better than Lynnewood. This one still holds many of its original Victorian features, which I really like to see. The grand hall was definitely a show-stopper, along with the main staircase which was breathtaking in its design. Mr. Trumbauer was an architectural genius of America's gilded age. A fabulous explore, Maureno, and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Thanks for taking us along!
It was breath taking . You have come a long way. help seeing things that people don't get to ever see. Granny Portland USA
The incredibly high windows, we're to let natural light in, in the Era of no electricity. Mirrors also. Gilded Age mansions, crammed as much detail and expensive touches as possible, because it was kind of a "ooh, look what I have" actions, with other millionares.
Quite often, in Gilded Age mansions, it was quite common to buy rooms in Europe, and ship them back. Windows, walls, paneling, ceilings and columns. Some of these are many centuries.
Grapes are frequently seen, for a festive yet abundant touch.
Thank you for the video 😊
Never thought of it in this way (the story about the windows). Thanks for learning us something new, Gillian! It was a great pleasure for us to make this video for you :)
Buongiorno Maureno
Siete meravigliosi❤💪💪💪🍀🍀🍀🍀
Gorgeous, Born and raised in Maryland. I lived so close but,so far away.

That’s amazing to hear thank you so much for all this support and happy you like all of the videos 😊
Nice place I watched you all the time when you bring a new one out great job
Thanks so much for always watching whenever we put out something new. Glad you liked this place! 😊
I think this is the most beautiful one I've ever watched. Thank you from Nova Scotia Canada ❤
It is amazing and it’s here at home. I’m thankful it’s been saved. we don’t have any majestic historic places here in America. Maureno keep on exploring this beautiful places maybe it will spark a renovation interest. I know it’s expensive however there are many resources you an find like the Historial Society that could help. I love your adventures you guys make it interesting and informative. I like the fact that you go every where and search every nook and cranny for information. You are mellow and focused. Thank God you’re back. Is everyone back? You are good together. I hope so…
Glad you can show a probably preservation of a beautiful house. So many sad stories yet this one is a happy ending but unbelievably gaudy Thanks 🐟
Hey hey, dear Maureno, it's so wonderful to watch a really classical explore video from Explomo! - That was a breathtaking
majestic looking palatial mansion. Amazing, bro! - It's only such a shame and a great pity seeing places like this one being
abandoned and left to decay. However good to hear, that this wonderful mansion is being renovated and provided with
a new purpuse. - Great video, which I very much enjoyed watching!
Wishing you all the best, peace and kindest regards from Switzerland.
I live close to this place and never heard of it! Never mentioned on the news or local PBS networks. Great job filming and thanks guys
Sad that did place does not get the recognition it deserves - it’s such a beauty! Happy to have captured it and shared it now. Thanks for watching Sarah! 😊
Maybe the news etc. hasn't mentioned it due to looting etc. Maybe keeping this mansion quiet has kept it preserved. Just a thought.
Que bom meninos, tem vídeo novo.
Thank you for showing us this beautiful place.

Maureno!! Wow thanks for sharing this beautiful place with us. Stay safe and healthy. ❤ From South Africa
You are very welcome it’s my pleasure Cindy! I will. Love back from NL! ❤️
What the??!!! Is that real or dreamy?? You explored a mansion or a fairytale?? 😍😍😍 This can't be real, like you always see this in movies or cartoon and you think it only exist there, omg just WOW 😍 Royalty vibes to the max. I just imagined myself wearing those victorian dresses and dancing with a prince in that pretty hall, a dream of mine haha! Those people lived their best life in this manor for sure. Imagine owning a home like this! I just wished i had the chance to see this place filled with antique stuff and furniture. Especially the library 😋 People who build this manor are true artists! Everything there is perfectly well done, the carvings the statues, and my fav, the painted ceilings and the amazing chandeliers 🔥🔥🔥🔥 i don't know what we should call this place, a castle or manor or a piece of art or masterpiece or a museum itself 😍 no words left to be said haha. I just enjoyed this place from the inside and outside, and i like the drone shots that showed us the whole property and its surroundings! And my eyes were satisfied seeing all that beauty, yet my heart was sad to see it neglected. But i was happy to hear that they fixed it. You guys were lucky to film it and us also to watch it through your camera! Thanks for always taking us to amazing explores with you. I bet the photos you took of this place are fire 🔥Until next time. Bye ❤❤❤❤
What a marvelous beauty, right Cynth? 😍

Simplesmente magnífico 🤩🤩🤩
Maureno...so ecstatic to see you on this side of the Atlantic. I hope your trip was remarkable. The homes may not be as splendorous in age as Europe, but those who could afford to, took great advantage of the architecture and finishing that only Europe could provide during that time period. This manor is in the same area as Lynnewood Hall which was also built by Horace Trumbauer. A preservation society has overtaken the re-establishment of that incredible Gilded Era estate. Like Elstowe, it was used as a religious school but for men. Unlike Elstowe though, much of it's interiors was sold off over the years to pay for expenses but much of the grandeur still remains. The first building was actually the private rooms for the convent sisters. It is going to be incredible to see what Landmark Developers do with the property. For so many of these homes, it's not the cost in buying these grand, forlorn and abandoned estates - it's the refurbishment and the vastly prohibitive cost in running and maintaining not just the house but the grounds. The original owners of these estates were billionaires even in their time.
Hi Heather, thank you so much I was very happy to see the United States for a difference! Yes, we do know about Lynnewood Hall but couldn’t get permission to film it. Thanks a lot for all your additional information, truly preciated! Hope to see you at the next one again :)
