  • Check out Andy Pettitte's performance in the 2001 ALCS that earned him MVP honors.
Pettitte won 2 of the 4 games that the Yankees won in this series. Pettitte was brilliant in Game 1 on the road, silencing the 116-win Mariners to just 1 run over 8 strong innings. In the Game 5 clincher, Pettitte pitched into the 7th inning behind help from his defense and plenty of run support. Pettitte's pitching in Games 1 and 5 helped the Yankees lock down their 4th straight AL pennant, and 38th trip to the World Series in franchise history.

Who do you think would have gotten WS MVP in 2001 if the Yanks held on and won game 7?
I'm thinking it's between Clemens and Rivera (assuming he completes the 2 inning save in Game 7). I wanted to think Soriano could be in the conversation too but he hit like .240 in the series. O'Neill was the only Yankee hitter who had a decent series, and he went 5 for 15 with 1 double. Not really series MVP level. It would have to have been a pitcher.

When I think of WS MVP, I think of having both great numbers and clutch moments.
Mariano would have gotten co-MVP against Arizona.
I would not have given it to Clemens because Clemens didnt even pitch 7 innings in game 7.
Paul Oneill was their best hitter with a slugging percentage of .500, but he really didnt do anything that would scream MVP.
Soriano had two clutch hits (games 5 and games 7), but his overall numbers dont scream MVP = .276 BA, and .333 OBP
Jeter had a clutch hit (game 4) and a clutch defensive play (game 7), but his overall numbers were less impressive than Soriano. = .226 BA and .275 OBP
Brosius had two clutch hits (game 3 and game 5), but his overall numbers were even more horrendous. .140 BA and .155 OBP
Tino had two clutch hits (game 4 and game 7), but his overall numbers were even horrendous. .186 BA and .250 OBP

@@hmhm856 so then why do you say co-MVP? Who would have been the other guy if all the other guys you mentioned would not qualify?

I feel the same way. Had Rivera finished off Game 7, he would have had 2 saves and a win, just like he had in the 99 WS that made him the MVP. However, Clemens on the other hand got the Yankees off the deck in Game 3 while getting extremely little run support, and then struck out 10 while pitching into the 7th inning in Game 7.
Soriano would have been a dark horse candidate because of the walk-off hit in Game 5 and the homer in Game 7, but he didn't have a great series by any means.
I agree it would have had to have been a pitcher since the pitching is really what allowed them to come within 2 outs of a 4-peat when they couldn't hit all series and had the fortune of the miraculous homers late in Games 4 and 5.
I'm gonna say they would've given it to Clemens, since they gave it to Rivera in 99 and it would have been the perfect ending to Clemens' Cy Young season.

@@hmhm856 So would you have given co-MVP to Clemens and Rivera?
Saying you wouldn't give it to Clemens for the series on the basis that he didn't complete 7 innings in Game 7 is short-sighted. He went 7 innings in Game 3 and pitched into the 7th in Game 7, and was the only pitcher to dominate Arizona twice in the series. He pitched to a 1.35 ERA in 13.1 innings, allowing just 2 ER and striking out a whopping 19 batters (against a lineup that didn't strike out during the regular season). Also factor in the magnitude of both starts, and Clemens' performance was undoubtedly MVP worthy.

It's easily Mariano Rivera who would've gotten WS MVP in '01.
      He had 2 IPS 0H 4Ks in Game 3
He had 1IP 0H in Game 4 and got the W
      He had 2IPs 2H in Game 5
      In Game 7 if he won 2IPS 3 K's
So Rivera would have had 7IPS 7Ks 0 ER. WS MVP. Not even a contest
