Can we appreciate that Sofia Coppola can direct
Like one great movie and thats it
And boy can she direct
Great director, bland actor.
@@stansmith8499 Nah.
Certainly can’t act that’s for damn sure
By the time filming was done, she was probably saying to herself the famous Hollywood line: "What I really want to do is direct." Incidentally, Lost in Translation is one of my favorite movies ever.
Mine, too!
Bill Murray's best movie at that
The films she directed are great. Directing was her calling.
oh she did that wow she inspired me to go to Tokyo when I was a kid that movie changed me and I went!!
Lost in translation is my second favourite film after Blade Runner
I mean her physical acting isn’t bad, and she certainly looks the part. But good lord, that flat vocal delivery.
So, all people are supposed to speak the same way? Idiot, I swear watching mainstream films have caused people to think like that.
Vocal delivery, hum I don’t see it. I might be missing it. But I don’t see it. Is she winno Ryder, no. I see some actors miscast bad and some who look horrible acting. I could not see it in Sophia. Just my opinion
That was my point. Her vocal delivery is awful. Her lines are 90% ADR which might be why.
Her “You’re. Using. Me. Just. To. Pull. The. Strings.” reminds me of Torgo from Manos’s legendary “I. Take. Care. Of. The. Place. While. The. Master. Is. Away.”
Don’t judge her so bad.
She was great. She speaks slowly which is her natural way. She couldn’t help the monotone as she had no training and her father pushed her into this acting venture in a movie before she was ready.
She’s now a great director/film maker and always a beauty! ❤
I think she was PERFECT for the role. Realistic and beautiful..looked the part, dressed the part, acted the part. What do ppl expect from a mobster's daughter...not an over animated actress that's for sure.😊
Can’t believe critics called her ugly. 😮
They're unprofessional
@@Tanishq22715 one critic outright called her “homely.” Definitely wouldn’t be allowed today…
But beyond that I just don’t understand wtf they’re talking about.
It's because of her face features. Anyone who doesn't have a "perfect" slim nose, almond shaped eyes and full pouty lips is considered "Ugly"
to certain people.
But I see an exotic beauty.
That girl is gorgeous!
I had a crush on her , when I first saw this movie ! Wth were those critics thinking ?!!
She wore her clothes beautifully
gowns...beautiful gowns...

My goodness, I had heard her acting was bad but I never thought it was this bad smh 😅
When he broke up with her, her reaction reminds me of my first time being dumped by my crush as a teen lol. The disbelief, the bargaining, the feeling of everything crashing down. She summed that up in her performance imo. I love her in this movie. Innocence.
The spechless al pacino's cry out when she was murdered Is a brutal scene... It sums up all the pain, all the sorrow...
Zafa ...despues de ver a brando el resto ...es cotillon!!😂😂❤
I think Siri has a more emotional delivery than Sofia in this movie.
I’m glad she became a talented writer and director because those are her strengths.
She was absolutely Gorgeous!! Loved her performance. Cried when she died because my family dealt with similar loss and she reminded me of my late sister
We hope her soul rest in peace
I am sorry for your and your family lost, my she rest in peace.
she was shot mafioso style? Can you tell more?
Gorgeous where?
@@thetruthandnothingbutthetr6484 I guess she'd be gorgeous to him if the only women he's ever seen are inbred, trailer park, mutants.......
I dont get the criticism of her.. she seems a lot like the rich Italian girls I’ve come across in my life. She seemed very authentic. I think the fact that she was pretty but not a bombshell added to the credibility/realism.
I mean to be fair she is absolutely gorgeous. But a terrible actress
Did you watch the movie? Even her aunt who was in the movie said she was a mistake.
@@juggles5474 I guess she'd be gorgeous if the only women you've ever seen are inbred, trailer park, mutants.........
When she crops up to meet Vincent you honestly think it’s the debut of a cinematic legend. There’s a playful danger about her. Then she says “Hello. Vincent. I. Remember. You.” and kills that vibe completely.
@@francofan100 This video of her clips is in the vault at the Library of Congress so future generations are guaranteed the opportunity to bask in the greatness of this cinematic performance. The real reason that she was not nominated for an Oscar, was because she would have swept them all up! The Academy knew that she'd of won the awards for categories that she wasn't even qualified for (Best Costume Design, Best Original Song, Best Animated Short Film, etc) so they made sure that she couldn't be nominated for any of them! A travesty, I say!
One of the saddest stories in cinema. I cried when she was murdered.
I screamed in pain when she was shot
she was man-slaughtered
Hearing her talk all I can think of is “the room” by Tommy Wiseau
That “No! No! No dad!” Made me immediately think of Tommy 😂
@@juggles5474 "Forty-five caliber slug! You're tearing me apart!"
Atleast tommy performance is a lot better than her performance as atleast tommy is giving his heart and sincerity
Her acting isn't terrible in this, but I'm glad she chose to pursue directing instead. She has a real affinity for it!
I'd never noticed that she was listening to Elvis Costello in that bedroom scene. Given Sofia's love of late 70s new wave / postpunk (as reflected in her soundtrack choices) that's a nice little view of what's to come
shes such a genuine and unique character and played so naturally by Sofia
You’re tripping hahahaha
First movie you've ever seen?
Played naturally??? Wow. Some people are robots. She scarred the film. What a surprise that she was the daughter of the director. You think she got the part because of her "natural" acting. There are high school play actors better than what she did here. Her delivery for all of her lines were beyond forced and obvious that she was just reading the script. She was a big reason why Godfather 3 is ignored by so many people as if it never happened.
must be your first movie 😂

I do not see there that Sofía Coppola's performance deserves the avalanche of criticism that it brought at the time, quite the opposite. She herself made it clear that being an actress was not her desire at all. To my understanding, she played the role of a young and innocent girl, with high education and respect for family tradition, still oblivious to the machinations of her mafia family. Her ignorance or lack of knowledge of the world in which her relatives operate makes her pure soul. She is a timeless, atypical and iconic beauty, which shows her character to be healthily captivating and the young age of both the actress and the character justifies her inexperience, perhaps, and that definitely works in her favor! Everything is calculated in Mary Corleone's performance, right down to her blatant challenge to her father (the basket scene), her half-conscious expression of reality ("you are using me to pull the strings" in the attic), her immature whimsy on the stairs that will lead to her death... Perfect performance and tragic unfair ending.
Awww she did her best! She was so young in this movie
If Andy Garcia was my cousin, I would have a really hard time staying away from him too
People have married cousins since time began. Gone With the Wind, was one big one.
My kingdom for her hair.
People talk so much ish about her and her performance but I LOVED her as Mary. She was so unique and unexpected, instead of the trite leading ladies of the time. She was so young, but was so natural, and believable. I think she conveyed so much believable emotion for her age and lent an authenticity to the performance with her youth and purity.
I agree. She was believable. Her co-stars not so much.

I agree. She was believable. Her co-stars not so much.
I've heard the lore, but...honestly, she's really not that bad. It's subtle. And again, an actor is as good, in part, because of the direction they take. I've certainly seen much, much worse. Winona Ryder has two - TWO - Oscar nominations, and I don't know how or why. At least Sofia's directorial skills run in the family.
It's true, she's just an amateur at that age, needs some work but she'd probably amount to a decent actor. Just a bit of nepotism that got her a role way over her head professionally.
This is fucking terrible
Never understood the draw of Winona Ryder. Her acting is...not great. Must be pretty privilege.
Some very flat moments but there's definitely been worse.

Sophia is very young and innocent here. I liked seeing her in this role. Americans are hyper critical and narrow minded about talent. She was celebrated throughout Europe.
she aint innocent
Americans? 😂 U in America
Europeans celebrate a lot of people who shouldn’t be celebrated 😂
It's funny how you Europeans insult us Americans.........until you need us to come and save you. Like in WW2, when you were all getting your asses handed to you and then we had to come and save the day.
Being critical of a performance(not even hyper critical) isn’t narrow minded. Sounds like you’re just sensitive
"My daughter Mary Corleone."
Vincent: "Challenge Accepted"
You could torture info out of war criminals just by making them watch her performance on a loop
Yeah, a lot of Israeli soldiers should be made to watch it.
I kinda saw her line delivery as a sleeping aid, minus the part where she dies.
Supposedly Winona Ryder was cast as Mary but had to pull out (and they couldn’t pull her back in). Sofia replaced her at the last minute, the Vincent/Mary story was trimmed, and critics crucified her. Clods-She looked the part, wasn’t half bad, and got to laugh last as a director.
Winona did Dracula for Francis Ford Coppola as an apology for dropping out of this film.
Yeah her acting is absolutely brilliant here. I'm sure they put this clip in the vault at the Library of Congress so that future generations can witness her acting greatness. 🙄
Winona Ryder was cast and actually filmed some scenes. She dropped out because of scheduling conflicts with Mermaids and supposedly nervous exhaustion.
Untrue. Mermaids was already shot. She flew to Rome after she wrapped Mermaids. She was set to film her first scene and was a no show the day filming for her was to begin. She, so they claim, could not get out of bed to film, as she was so exhausted. A doctor was brought on set, and they were informed that if she filmed anything she would suffer a breakdown on set. She flew home the next day. The only thing they have for her as far as filming is concerned are her wardrobe fittings that they shot the day before she allegedly could not get out of bed.@@lostNxbox29
I see what u did there with Winona
Everytime she says the line "Why am I doing this?", I shout BECAUSE YOU'RE THE DIRECTORS DAUGHTER, FFS!
I love her in this movie to be honest.
She wrecked that film.
0:38 - for some reason I always laugh at that part 😂
I loved her role and role play. Physically, a beauty.
Thank God she's an amazing director! One of my favorites in the business.
That final dad moment got to me and he never got his girl again and her cousin will never talk to her again.
That’s why you don’t brush ppl off when they want to talk to you you never know when will be their last day on this earth.
Facts
I find it difficult to believe there was no-one other than Sofia Coppola available to play the part of Mary. She made the film memorable for all the wrong reasons.
I will never understand the hate she got for this performance. She is so beautiful, and her understated delivery is exactly what you might expect from a shy teenager, which is the character she was playing!
You are a very kind person.
Sofia Coppola is the one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen, she’s definitely my girl crush

@@thetruthandnothingbutthetr6484 ok that’s ur opinion but I think it’s sad that we’ve stopped embracing unique features. I think her big nose is beautiful and represents her Roman ancestors. Not everyone suits a button nose.

And now she's a director like her dad
Was incest really necessary?
Bro idk what the writers were thinking 😭😭
The only thing I can think of now off the top of my head is this. In the Bible, powerful men who did wrong in the sight of the Lord had calamity brought upon them. And all kind of things happened to their throne and their family. This sort of mirrors that with all the evil the Corleone has done, calamity is brought upon them both internally and externally.
First cousin love is not recommended but it is NOT incest.

As someone who loved Godfather I and II, I wasn't as fond of Godfather III, but I enjoyed Al Pacino and Sofia Coppola's roles in the movie. I think Sophia is remarkably photogenic and beautiful with an ideally authentic Italian/ Sicilian appearance, and her relatively flat delivery as some have called it comes across as realistic to me. I am fond of her expressions as well. I like the fact that she doesn't overact.
This is soooo true. And it shocks you. Even your bestest. Or a homie you been good good friends with for nearly 20 years. And don’t think they won’t take it from you or not give it back around Christmas either.
Godfather Part 3 was definitely one of the movies ever
Let's just be honest, if this was *ANY* other actress, she wouldn't have been hated for this role. I think people solely hated this because she is Francis Ford Coppola's daughter. This was a really good movie. Was it great? Not quite. But compared to the first 2 Godfather movies, what movies are great?
Are you deaf? That would make sense
with line delivery like that, she would've been hated for the role no matter who her father was.
She's like the female equivalent of Keanu Reeves.
🤨
where you dreamed that out?

How so?
She's not bad looking and I'm sure she looks better than you
I cant help but laugh at her dearh scene. The way she says "Dad" like shes only slightly uncomfortable

I'd love to see her do a movie about...Connie! Who is the mover in GF 3. The relationship between her and Vincent bears scrutiny to say the least.
Is She dubbed ?
Sweet home Sicily
Huh I don't get the criticism she gets for this role. She perfectly encapsulates an innocent sheltered young girl forcing herself to be more grown up than she is.
I totally agree. As you say, an innocent and awkward young girl. Sheltered by her father and I felt her performance was quiet and as gentle as was her nature.
She's a terrible actress but one hell of a director. I hope that she wins that directing oscar one day!

I said the same thing lol. I just wish they put that part at the beginning so we didn't have to suffer through the whole movie with her in it. Michael should have just Fredo'd her in the first 10 minutes........

This movie was hilarious. I can’t even consider it part or Godfather trilogy.
They say she ruined the movie,

Might have been bad acting, but man she was a hottie back then
Her very first role was in GF1
some of the scenes aren’t completely awful, like the cafe scene is decent. it sounds like they overdubbed a Lot of her lines, like they weren’t even mixed into the scene right. she sounds like she’s somewhere completely different.
Andy Garcia un bel homme et bon acteur!❤❤❤
well...she's a fantastic director
She's very beautiful, and some people actually do speak with flat delivery... That's the way Sophia speaks in real life, everyone says how quiet she is, even when she directs!
I mean she wasn't working with the best material either. Not even Winona could make a first cousin love scene work. 😂
In retrospect I don't think a seasoned actor could have done this her role better - conversely, don't forget Sofia was also in Rumble Fish playing. For G3 she brings a certain unawareness and naive confidence as Mary. She was about the same age as her character, has a powerful successful Italian father like Mary, and experienced the unearned privilege Mary had. When the film came out , critics went in a group tizzy panning her performance. But if a Wynona Ryder or a similar actor (who is one of my favorite actors) had played the role I'm not sure we get the loss of innocence and tragedy when Mary is killed., her death symbolizes Michael's sins being revisited upon him, (he killed not just his brother, but the son of his mother and father, Michael is the one who commits the ultimate sin in the history of all three narratives. Sofia Coppola is one of my favorite writer/directors and Lost in Translation inspired my recent short film - full disclosure.
Her death was the best part of the movie. I wish it happened in the very beginning so we didn't have to suffer through her terrible acting through the whole movie!
Why did he put his 18 year old daughter in this film to hookup with a 34 year old so creepy
😮😮😮😮😮😮
Because the actress who was originally meant for the role was murdered day's before the film started shooting so Coppola had to use his daughter for the role or cancel the filming of godfather part 3 which meant million's of dollars would be lost look up the story behind why Sophia got the part
You realize they don't really have sex in movies. Idk what's worse, the fact that you think its real, or the fact you think it's real and aren't bothered that she got murdered in the movie.
We have a weird culture where sex, the thing that creates life and feels good = evil and disgusting
But extreme violence, gore and pain are accepted with open arms
