John Cazale was such a phenomenal talent who was lost way too soon. Godfather Part 1 and 2, Dog Day Afternoon, The Deer Hunter, The Conversation. It's insane that he was in only 5 films, and all of them nominated for Best Picture (with 3 of them actually winning).

I totally agree. John Cazale is an Amazingly Talented Man and he left this earth way too soon, in my humble opinion. The body of work he left is a Gift to us all. Be well.
The craziest thing about Fredo is that when he dropped the gun, was sent away to Vegas, and was kept out of the loop on everything, including the change of power from Don to Michael. Fredo always defended and sided with the enemies of his family as if he felt betrayed by them. That whole story of Fredo and his Corleone family is such a vital part of the storylines in both movies and was done in superlative manner.
Deception and treachery are common to those who are incompetent, weak, and jealous. Just look at the Biden family for example. People like this can't get what they want by initiative so they cheat the system and everyone else in the process...
I agree. I don't know how to the book portrays Fredo but the 1st movie subtly sets up the 2nd one early on with Fredo moving to Vegas. It is just well made and flows great once Part II starts

Don't forget that Fredo was depicted as barely surviving childhood illness that could of made him a bit dim. Meningitis or such.
I find the scene where Michael still offers Fredo a chance to save himself before he flees all the more tragic because Michael truly was heartbroken as at that point there was no turning back, he had to take action against Fredo's betrayal.

I imagine Fredo justified the “kidnapping” thing as similar to what the Turk did to Tom. They’d take him, scare him, make their proposition, and let him go. It’s completely naive and foolish but I can see Fredo’s past informing his decision a little.

Great video. I always found the scene where Michael and Fredo are at the bar ordering "Banana Daiquiri" (I think) heart-breaking as Michael speaks to Fredo like a brother and with an intimacy which underpins that relationship, whilst Fredo acts nervously because he's aware of the betrayal yet is shocked by Michael's friendliness and honesty. Then his shock turns to frustration as he wishes he and Michael had been like this before. I believe Michael still loved Fredo at that point as his brother and was unaware of the betrayal, and didn't even doubt Fredo had anything to do with the "hit". For me, that's why Michael was truly devastated when he came upon the truth. The fact that Michael later decided that Fredo must pay for this with his life inadvertently set up the tragic events and Michael's failure to find redemption in Godfather Part 3.
That is such as good scene. Especially the line where Fredo says, "I wish we could have done this more when we were younger." He was implying he wished they had a more normal family relationship which would have prevented his ultimate betrayal.

You missed the important point, that is where michael first got suspicious of fredo. Fredo was trying too hard to seem out of sorts but he knew how to behave. When he asks how do you say banana daquiri and michael tells him he immediately says to the waiter "uno banana daquiri" and michaels eyes light up. He knew to call the waiter with "por favor", he didnt know how to say "banana daquiri" BUT he knew to order one so smoothly as saying "uno banana daquiri"

John Cazale's death in 1978 only registered a small section in the papers. It was in the later years that his star grew and has since rightly been regarded as one of the great character actors. And yet, in the only 5 films he was in (it seemed like more everytime I see him), in total he never really had that much screen time but, man, they truly mattered. *RIEP,* John.

To this day when I order the Chicken Alfredo I do it with tears in my eyes and when the Dominos guy knocks I throw open the door and grab him giving him a big kiss saying you betrayed me! For some reason they never take my orders unless I use a different phone, no clue why. Probably a Sicilian thing.

Fredo betrayed Michael 3 possible times. He also knew that Roth had a senate insider to take down Michael, but kept that info from him, until he was already caught.

I have thought about these questions looking for clues as to what exactly took place. Fredo saying he didn't think it was going to be a hit and the kidnapping plot left out of the script answers a lot of questions. Amazing how a movie can keep you interested for years.

I read the script for Part II many years ago & concluded that it was definitely Fredo who opened the drapes in Michael's bedroom, not realizing that it was going to be a hit. I think the script doesn't say so but I think Coppola meant for the audience to figure it out. Maybe Fredo thought his opening the drapes would enable Roth's boys to grab Michael when he was in the bedroom, or simply to scare Michael, making him easier for Roth to negotiate with. (Kidnapping a Family don may seem insane, but I believe Joe Bonanno was actually kidnapped in reality, then set free.) It was Fredo who killed the assassins. They came to Fredo and Deanna's room after the attempted hit, thinking that Fredo would lead them out of the compound, probably the same way he had led them in. The assassins probably came to Fredo's room's window. But realizing by then that he had been played by Roth, Fredo killed both of the assassins himself right outside his room, probably shooting them from inside his room. Michael knew that it was the traitor who killed the assassins, and said so. That was Coppola's way of telling the audience that the inside traitor, whoever it is, killed the assassins him/herself. Also, the assassins dead bodies were left right outside Deanna's room. Deanna said so. Well, that was Fredo's room. (Deanna slept with a mask over her eyes, & she was totally drunk by the party's end, or perhaps sedated by Michael's men because she had been drunk, "falling all over the [dance] floor". The novel specifies that Fredo was actually a tough guy in his own way, just not very bright. (Fredo's lack of intelligence may be connected to his sickness as a young child, depicted in Part II.) Even after all that, Fredo held back from Michael that he knew that a particular gov't guy persecuting Michael belonged to Roth.
Fredo was a very bitter, resentful guy. It was Fredo who opened the drapes. It was Fredo who killed the assassins.
Fredo most probably opened the drapes, but I seriously doubt Fredo killed TWO assassins. He wasn't skilled enough or had the right temperament to do it. He couldn't even control his obnoxious drunk wife let alone kill two hired assassins. Fredo was NOT a killer. LOL

I read somewhere that probably Rocco Lampone was on Roth`s pocket too. It was him who killed the assassins and that`s why he was send to kill Roth in such a suicidal manner at the end of the film.

The fact that we're still talking about and analyzing two fifty-year-old film shows the genius of Coppola's (with Puzzo's original story) writing/directing skills. He (subliminally) planted and set up so many "hidden" gems throughout these two incredible stories/films that it captures us time and again. As an artist/writer (and teeny-tiny filmmaker) I learned a long time ago that the more details you add to your work, the richer/deeper/more interesting the final piece will be. And, it will keep the audience(s) coming back to see it again and again-each time discovering more gems with each viewing. I always think of The Godfather l & ll and Coppola when I make any art. My most recent visual piece (pointillism) has nothing to do with FFC but the level of detail in it is so incredibly inspired by his genius. ALL artist can (and should) learn from this Master.

I believe there was a second traitor and I believe it Rocco. When Mike tells him he wants the assassins alive, Rocco's answer is "we'll try" and Mike again loudly specifies that he wants them alive. Also - When Tom tells Rocco to fish the assassins bodies out of the drain and get rid of them - the first thing Rocco asks is "Where's Mike?" Tom merely looks at him and says "Rocco." Tom being consigliere means that Rocco wouldn't have questioned Tom's authority to give him an order, which means he just wanted to know where Mike was. Why? I believe that were hints from the director. The second and most obvious reason I believe it was Rocco (and Mike later realized it) is that he was sent by Michael on what basically amounted to a suicide mission to assassinate Roth - while Roth was surrounded by cops and FBI and Rocco was killed. He never stood a chance of escape. Mike spent his life cheaply in other words. Mike didn't risk Al Neri because he knew that Al, had a sterling reputation that was based on extreme loyalty to Michael and this evidenced by the fact that during part III - Neri is STILL right next to Mike as his most trusted right hand man - while Rocco was basically sent to die. He was also trusted with the assignment of killing Fredo and was rewarded for it. The third reason I believe this is because the two assassins were obviously killed by someone with skill in killing - one of them even having their throat cut. Whoever killed them was able to surprise and kill two men without being detected. It would have to have been either Rocco or Neri, who were both always close to Mike and trusted with protecting him. Rocco's loyalty was based on business - but Neri's loyalty to Michael went far deeper. Neri was NOT a businessman, he was a cop with an extreme sense of justice and loyalty. He was saved from prison by Tom and Clemenza - THAT is what his loyalty was based on - eternal gratitude.

Mike had a role in saving Al Neri too. He met with him, invited him to lunch with the family, pulled his yellow sheet, etc.
I think if Rocco wanted to kill Mike, he would have already done it. He took an order to go on a suicide mission. Didn't think twice about losing his life to kill Roth. Mike trusted him explicitly. Mike needed Roth dead, and Rocco was the only one he trusted to get the job done. Tom was next in line.
..no way Rocco would betray the family...... Rocco was the guy who iced Paulie,, and both Rocco and Neri were sitting in the room when Michael was confronting Tom Hagen shortly before The Roth hit.... Tom says it's impossible, quite logically concluding that if the Corleone's sent a man directly, which is what Michael did,, it would probably undoubtedly be traced back to them.....
Rocco knew it would probably be a suicide mission,, but he said difficult not impossible..... If Rocco was a traitor either then or at this point he would have just agreed with Tom and saved his ass.....

I’m truly grateful for these videos. They fill in so many gaps for me. I’ve watched the Godfather trilogy (mostly 2 and 2) countless times. I have the dialogue practically memorized, but I always walk away feeling like I missed something. These vids let me know I didn’t miss anything in the movie. These things were missing from the movie.

1. Those were not Cuban "police" they were soldiers. And they went to the hospital to get Roth out, since he was a good friend of Batista and very likely the new regime would execute or imprison him. I'm sure they knew where Roth was, he had been admitted to the hospital that night. 2. Michael invited Fredo to "spend some time together" not to try to test Fredo because he suspected him. I thought the movie pointed out early that Michael felt affection for Fredo and felt sorry for him. He was trying to improve his relationship with his only surviving brother.

Fredo could have been the best spy Corleones could have had if only Fredo curbed his ambition of being the head of the family for which he was unfit. Fredo could have pretended that he is bitter with Michael to call out all the enemies. An opportunity missed.
You gotta realize that Hyman R & Johnny O wouldn't be giving Fredo any information that he could take back to Michael unless it was misinformation. Fredo was a dead man walking anyway cuz as soon. As they killed Michael, Fredo was next. You can't trust a person who has betrayed their own family.

And my theory is Fredo was jealous and upset about being passed over like he told Michael at the boathouse scene, and worked with Hyman Roth and Johnny Ola on side deals, and he really didn’t know that Roth wanted to shoot at Michael’s room “I swear to God Mike, I didn’t know it was going to be a hit”.
I think Roth and Ola manipulated Fredo and Fredo gave out information on the compound without knowing what the intent was for.
I think Fredo did tell Ola that there was going to be an attempt at Roth before the new year like he told him.
Not many knew of the attempt, most likely it was Fredo.
Michael saw Fredo as a liability, and had Fredo whacked.

This is the most accurate definition by far, Fredo got played, plain and simple. Michael wanted Fredo to feel involved, but let his emotions get in the way and let the leash to far with him. With his father and Sonny gone, as well as Clemenza and most of Vito's original crew, Michael had an enormous weight on his shoulders in running the family practically solo.

Here’s my take on what Fredo knew:
I think that on some level, he knew it was going to be a hit. Fredo wasn’t smart, but he grew up in the Mafia, so he knew how things were done and it wasn’t through kidnapping.
What freaked him out was that the attempt on Michael’s life endangered Kay and the kids. As I understand it, the Mafia (at least as Vito ran it) had pretty strict rules about harming “civilians” (e.g. innocent bystanders and peripheral members of the Family). Clemenza notes this when Mike goes out to see Kay after Vito got shot; Solozzo and Tattaglia know that Mike is a “civilian,” so he’s in no danger. Similarly, Apollonia wasn’t the target of the car bomb; her death was collateral damage.
Even Michael realizes this breach of the rules when he recounts the hit to Pentangeli. He’s not upset that someone tried to kill him, but that it happened “in my home, where my wife sleeps, where my children play with their toys…”
We know that Fredo likes Kay; in Havana, he tells Michael that he should have married someone like her. We also see him get close to Anthony once he’s “accepted back” into the family. The idea that they might have been hurt would mean that Fredo didn’t just betray Michael, but his father as well because the people he was working with didn’t “play by the rules” that Vito established. Since his entire life was an effort to prove himself to Vito, that kind of betrayal is what drives him to abandon the conspiracy.

In a way this was karma for Michael. He met with Sollozzo as a 'civilian' which was meant to make them lower their guard. Then he killed them in cold blood in the restaurant.

Fredo was more of a fool than he was stupid. Remember was Don Vito said to Mike, "women and children can be foolish men can't".

I think Rocco was in on it too. Because in GF2 and the hit on Hyman Roth was a suicide mission. Michael somehow figured it out and offered Rocco a way to redeem himself. Just like Michael gave Frank Pentangeli a way to redemption.
I agree. They could have had a family soldier take out Roth. It didn't need to be Rocco, who was high up in the organization. Rocco and Michael knew the hit would be a suicide mission, so Michael sent Rocco to allow him to have his family taken care of when he was killed in Roth's assassination.

You know what's crazy, I never even assumed that Fredo was the one who could have opened the drapes. But now I kind of feel like he's the one who did it. This whole time my entire life I always thought that it was somebody on the help you know like a maid or something who was helping hymen Roth. But that is not logical for some reason I just felt like Fredo could not have done it like Fredo wouldn't do this but after watching this video, damn it Fredo
Me too. I always thought that he allowed the guys/assassins to wander around the house and the property, which was horrible in and of itself, but that he didn't know that it was an out and out hit. Even at his worst, I never believed that he opened the drapes.
I suspected that maybe the "help" had opened the curtains.
If it was that Fredo opened the curtains, didn't it cross his mind that it was going to be a "hit" and not a kidnapping?
If they were going to kidnap Michael, why would they need the curtains to be open?
As for the two assassins' being killed.
I figured that was part of the plan all along so they couldn’t talk.
When I watched the movie, in my mind I saw the assassins running to a waiting car to be whisked away but instead of being whisked away they where shot and killed by the men/man in the waiting car. All as part of the plan.

Fredo is a Liar!!!!! He knew what he was doing. He did not like not having any "real" power. He wanted Michael out of the picture. I keep saying this and everyone keeps trying to make excuses for Fredo. He was jealous of Michael and wanted his position point blank period.
Plausible deniability is what Fredo conveyed but I know he knew. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Fredo believed in that that's why he denied he knew Johnny. Fredo understood Johnny and old man Roth as he called him was Michael's enemies. Michael was placed in a double bind and no decision he took with Fredo would have been "right". Michael, in the end chose self preservation the law of the land.
I agree. He also had no problem to let go Michael to jail. He told him about the bribed senate member when it was already too late. If they wouldn't have shut up Pentangelli last second Micheal would've been in jail for perjury. Fredo didn't run to Micheal & told him as soon as possible & before he prejured himself, I wonder why 🤔
I don't buy the "poor Fredo"-excuses, he clearly wanted Michael out of the way.

I can't believe I never knew that the assassins outside of Michael's window could actually be seen... And they were so close, too! I always thought Michael just sensed the danger of the open curtains. Turns out his & his wife's brush with death was literally even closer than I thought. Few people ever see two armed would-be killers like that & live.
Watch the part again. Micheal did not suspect danger. Kay asked why are the curtains open? That is when Micheal realized immediately that he did not open, she did not open, someone opened while she was sleep.
@@kcorpora1 I thought Michael sensed the danger after his mind processed (consciously or unconsciously) the implications of the fact that someone had opened up his bedroom curtains at night, and that after sensing the danger he made the immediate decision to duck and protect himself and Kay from what he guessed might be an assassination attempt about to go down. My point was I thought this all flowed from reasoning and instinct and a sort of sixth-sense developed after years of being in the mob and neck-deep in a devious world full of plots, counter-plots, and sudden death.
Turns out, though, it might not have been Micheal's quick-silver intuitive reasoning alone that saved day, but a quick reaction time after actually seeing assassins outside the window. And I must say that actually seeing the assassins would make his move less impressive. But only just a bit less though -- because even if it took an actual vision of the would-be assassins to crystalize his burgeoning sense of danger, his reaction time was still superb, and his chosen action correct, and was a marked contrast to Fredo's confused and clueless bumbling back when Vito was shot in the first film.
@@polarvortex3294 when Micheal walked into the bedroom and saw the drawing from his son, Kay woke up. He asked her did she see the drawing, she said yes. While he started to walk over to the dresser she asked "Micheal why are the drapes open?" That is when he looked out the window and saw something. So it was Kay that gave him suspicion to look up, the drapes open, look out there are assassin's outside.

Very good analysis. The second traitor theory is also a solid one. Lampone's mission was basically a suicide one - obviously Michael would've known how heavily Roth was being guarded, but Lampone would have known this as well. I also find it unlikely that Fredo informed the Cuban authorities that Roth was to be assassinated, as by then Michael didn't trust Fredo and would have made sure Fredo didn't know about it.
What an entertaining and accurate commentary of Fredo's betrayal of Michael and the family he heinously committed. The times I've watched the movie over the years, I've finally learned the accounts of Fredo conspired to work with Hyman, driven for independence from his brother's shadow and assured wealth and recognition if he cooperated with setting up plots to destroy Michael for his gain. I believe he was the traitor who secretly had Roth's henchmen invade the property and gun down Michael and his family. I found Fredo as a slow-witted weakling, but after watching this telling video, I'm convinced he would sell his soul to the devil to take Michael out, knowing he was seduced by the rewards fully granted by Hyman Roth.

I think there were 3 hitmen. The leader took out the 2 (unknown hired help) before escaping the compound.
I think Rocco may have killed them. The fact Rocco was on a suicide mission to kill Hyman Roth can be explained by only thing: He betrayed Michael and was forced to kill Hyman Roth out in the open, where it was likely he would be killed in return gunfire.

I never thought about kidnapping. That's a really interesting theory. I don't think that's what it was, but it's not out of the question considering what happened to Tom. They might have told Fredo they just needed to know some guys on the inside who could talk to Michael and convince him of the better deal.
But I think they told Fredo they needed to know some guys on the inside who might be more on their side, maybe unhappy with Michael, with the intent of being guys they could talk to who could persuade Michael. But really, I think they knew Fredo was not happy with how things turned out (why would he be?), and they figured Fredo might be able to help them find guys on the inside who would be willing to attempt to take Michael out.
Anyone could have gotten in the party, but obviously not armed. But guys in the family tasked with security would have guns and could pull it off with some help and support. That's my theory.

After the confrontation with Moe Greene in Vegas when Fredo took sides against Michael, he was given a very carefully worded warning by Michael about why he should never try it again. The fact that it didn't register shows how untrustworthy and resentful Fredo truly was, and that even someone as smart as Michael didn't want to face facts about a family member being a potential traitor.

This was good presentation. Let me offer another theory. If there was a second traitor, and it was Rocco, it seems out of character for the increasingly unsympathetic Michael to let him survive until the hit on Roth at Miami airport. Michael is the same man who, as the new Don, didn't hesitate to have Tessio whacked, a man who was closer to his father than anyone except Clemenza, and whom Michael had known since childhood. If we rule out Rocco, then it must have been Fredo who killed the two hitters after their botched attempt on Michael. I think we're given a hint of this when we see Fredo's wife screaming hysterically and claiming she saw someone outside her window. The hitters must have come to Fredo's house looking for assistance just after the hit. Fredo couldn't leave them alive, because if they were caught alive (as Michael insisted), they could have been forced to rat out Fredo as their accomplice. Just because Fredo was no mental giant, didn't mean that he wasn't familiar with violent death. When he later revealed his rage and ambition to Michael in boathouse, Michael realized he could never trust Fredo again.

Then some of the blame has to fall at the Godfather feet. He knew Fredo was the weak on out of his sons. He should have sent Fredo to college instead of involving him in the family business. No way was Fredo built for the Gangster lifestyle.
People don't realize what goes on in Italian families and probably in Jewish and Greek families also where the birth order is emphasized, especially in the timeframe of the "Godfather". When Sunny was murdered, Fredo would have thought that he should have been next in line, but the Godfather title went to Michael. Fredo would have been jealous of Michael and have felt that Michael had stolen Fredo's place in "la famiglia". Fredo was also probably missing some I.Q. points and Michael's enemies took advantage of that. Michael's killing of Fredo may have started a chain of events (Karma) in which Michael's daughter is killed. Karma works like that. Ialso wonder if the character of Moe Greene was modeled after Ben (Bugsy) Seigel.
You make some excellent points. However, The Don knew from personal experiences, just how tremendous that mafia lifestyle is. Fredo should have never been involved in the family business. Left up to Fredo, there would be no family business. Starting with Paulie calling out sick.

Al Pacino was absolutely brilliant. As the trilogy progresses and Michael becomes more cunning and closer to the dark side, his physicalities begin to change, even his eyes! When we first see him at the wedding, his face is always a bit more docile, gentle and he’s smiling more; but in a sweet way. That all completely changes, especially when he comes back from Sicily which also sets the tone for the rest of Michael’s life; the leader of the underworld. When he arrives at Kay’s school and his dressed differently, has his bodyguards and asks her to marry him and she steps into the car, that symbolizes Michael bringing Kay into his world of darkness; she’s stepping away from innocence and into evil (hence the school kids in the background).
