York is a walker’s paradise because most central streets in the historic district are for pedestrians only with many fascinating sights packed into a small area of just one square mile. Walking is definitely the best way to see this old city, so expect to do a lot of exploration on foot.
This town is surrounded by its original medieval high stone walls that protected it from attackers in the past and since then it's protected the town from modernization because you'll find that the old historic area within these walls is looking like it's about 500 years old and many of the buildings in fact are older.
The heart of town is completely free of automobiles, dedicated entirely to the pedestrian, filled with beautifully preserved buildings. This is not just a couple of streets without traffic, but an entire zone with a dozen small lanes that you can easily navigate on your own without fear of getting lost. While many towns in Europe have created such pedestrian zones, York was one of the first to make this transformation, and continues to expand that walking district.
The streets are narrow and wind in all directions with many old timber and plaster dwellings featuring overhanging stories and high-peaked red-tiled gables.
Today York is a lively city filled with culture, entertainment, shops, characters, legends and fine restaurants. The rich history comes to life in your visit because many of the old forts, palaces, churches and streets are preserved just as they were centuries ago, and several museums help tell that long story.
There is so much to see in this medieval gem you really could have fun for several days. You could easily find 100 things to do in your visit, so it is certainly worth spending at least three days to see it all. But if one day is all you can spare, we’re showing you how to squeeze in as much as possible.
There are so many wonderful sights to show you in York, England, such as the great cathedral towering over the medieval town and the famous narrow lane called the Shambles. York has one of the largest pedestrian zones in the country, filled with places to eat, and shop, and walk around. There is a street market every day and sometimes it's a very long market that takes up many city blocks.
You'll enjoy the scenic vistas along the river where you can sit at an outdoor café or take a boat ride. York is a great medieval city that's filled with lots of things to do and historic sites to enjoy.
We'll be taking you up into York castle and showing you the amazing medieval wall that's still standing and runs all the way around the city.
We'll spend most of our time strolling through this magnificent pedestrian zone with its old-fashioned buildings and modern shops. We'll take you on a big walk all around through the pedestrian center showing you the various attractive lanes, starting out with Petergate, one of the two or three main shopping streets.
Cars are not allowed in this area, that's called Within the Walls. There'll be some delivery vehicles in the morning, perhaps, and working vehicles with permits, but generally pedestrians are free to just stroll down the middle of the road here, making it a perfect place to meander.
It seems every few steps, you'll pass another place to eat - perhaps a nice French restaurant, or a snack shop, or maybe a pub.
It must be some kind of miracle these old buildings are preserved so well and then a testament to modern urban planning and the economy that they are thriving today with these businesses, all seeming to do very well.
This is the best film on York I have ever seen. Superb and interesting commentary. This is the way a great travel movie should be made !
Thank you Richard! It is my 5th movie about York, so I'm finally getting it right.
@@denniscallan Dennis I saw you finnish Brown uni in 1967? please don't take this the wrong way but you must be getting on in age now , I was just wondering if you will keep making videos as long as possible , and that have you got some one to fill your shoes later on *as in take over your role?
@@michaelhawkins7389 Yes, that is true, getting on but feeling like it is still the 1960s. I have no plans to slow down, will keep creating new movies every 2 weeks, and planning on many more Europe trips to collect new scenes for you.
who ever dislikes this , has no respect for the Beautiful city of York , and doesn't respect History or the culture of York :( , I live not far from York but I hope to live in York some day
As a proud scotsman.I used to live in york.I couldnt get lost with a blindfold on.its a must visit city.
Spring Break is a lovely time in England: still cool, daffodils blooming, crowds a little smaller. I’ve stayed about 3 weeks in York all together and would recommend tourists spend several days if possible. York feels more like “England” than London, which is a busy international city. If you don’t have a vehicle, it’s easy to hire a taxi to drive you into the countryside without the stress of renting a car and driving on the left side. We had great meals at Loch Erne (fish) and The Guy Fawkes Inn (atmospheric, tasty traditional meat pies). Your video makes me long to return to this beautiful place. If people want to avoid London, we always recommend York and Edinburgh.
What a beautiful medieval city. Thanks for the excellent tour.
I was born and raised in York, lovely City, lots to see! If anyone has a specific questions I can help with about York please go ahead! Great film thank you! ❤️

Which are the must see places in York for Australians (out of 14 days UK trip) in July 2022
York is a brilliant city, I love it when the Christmas markets are on, they are the best Christmas markets in the country in my opinion! Very underrated city.
Love that place. The first time was a week with a YorkPass and it was a struggle to see everything. I found September was best for me.
ah yes, i have finally found it, *Old York*
I live here ❤
Amazing historical place! 👌
Great video
truly the best film by far thanks so much for this Visited York on my birthday 3 months ago weather was nice took a picture of York minster looked good hopefully to visit York again!
Thank you
Also dont forget since they stopped all the traffic coming into the city the buildings have had more chance to preserve as the vibration and heavy traffic would have no doubt destroyed some of them. Great city.
Fascinating! Watched your other York videos before visiting in the summer of last year. Will definitely follow your advice and go back to York in the lean season.
I enjoyed your previous video about the snickel ways with Warwick Burton, (deceased). This is another great, information packed and enjoyable video, thank you Dennis!
Excellent ,as usual.

Brilliant
Beautiful place mate!...cool and nice tour 🇪🇸♥️🇬🇧🇬🇧
🇬🇧❤️🇪🇸
The commerce of York predates the 1200's. There was a thriving city doing serious commerce in Viking times! Yarvik.
Thank you.
When was this filmed ?
Mother was born in the shambles. Grandfather was a apprentise butcher but WWl changed all that.
Surprised that this guide says nothing about York's reputation as one of the most haunted cities in Europe, having been continually occupied for at least 2,000 years. For those with an interest in history, walking tours start from outside the Kings Arms public house on Kings Staith near Ousegate.
That's because I don't believe in ghosts.
Great channel. Inspired me to get out and do more outdoor videos on my channel Cheers
Saves the money to be there !

The Danes didn't leave. Those who survived the massacre of the Danes simply took English names!
Thanks, Christian
Best medieval city in England? York!!! Shame about the keep though!!
*Nice video!! Very engaging from beginning to end. Nevertheless, businesses and investment are the easiest way to make money irrespective of which party makes it to the oval office.*
You got it wrong York has a minster,so please get it right
I mention the Minster four times, such as at 24:25 so maybe you did not watch the video you are criticizing. The church website opens with this: "York Minster is one of the world’s most magnificent cathedrals." In other words, the Minster is a cathedral.
