I think we are legitimately in a position where Banshees can win screenplay, The Fabelmans/Avatar can win director, and Everything Everywhere can still somehow win best picture. Rules keep getting broken every year: maybe the screenplay/director correlation with the best picture winner is the next rule to be broken.

I think Drama was just too crowded this year and Women Talking suffered from that (because how can you be the Globes and not get the big splashy films in there), but the fact that it still got a Screenplay nomination gives me hope that it can still happen at the Oscars (I also chalk up its lack of acting nominations to no one knowing who to single out, very much a la Spotlight... both even won the Robert Altman award at the Spirits). This does solidify a few contenders, but doesn't entirely take out others. Also, I still think Brendan Fraser could win this, even if he is the only nominee from his film. It wouldn´t be the first time (Gary Oldman won a Golden Globe when he was the only nomination for Darkest Hour, so did J.K. Simmons for Whiplash... and guess what! Both films were ultimately nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars)...

Women talking might get swept under the rug with its picture and director nominations by Avatar, SAG will carry Women Talking's acting categories. This is looking like a very stacked year, especially with lots of blockbusters putting their hand in the basket. It won't surprise me if the academy goes for the films that audiences have seen more rather than one that has more representation, especially with how the oscars are in need of better publicity. Elvis is loved by lots of its audience, wakanda forever for the most part has it and top gun maverick is most definitely going to get nominated

I never understand the mindset that just because any form of entertainment that has a diverse cast/storytelling are automatically labeled by some people as “lacking in quality”. It’s kind of a racist assumption to assume that diverse stories are somehow inherently inferior to more standard stories. Nobody can really make a substantial argument that The Fablemans or Banshees are just inherently more superior films that EEAAO or Black Panther just because of diversity was the problem.

Danielle Deadwhyler snub was harsh! I really didn’t care for Elvis. Butler was solid with what little he had with the characterization outside the performance aspect of the role. Elvis getting in for best picture drama and director is it just over performing. The movie was sloppy with unmotivated tacky transitions and an uneven pace. Ana de Armas has the makings of a great actress, and in Blonde, you can tell she gave it her ALL, but the movie was misogynistic, masochistic, and took delight in finding ways to drag Marylin Monroe down in a multitude of sadistic ways. I’m hoping that Ana doesn’t get the nom at the Oscars, Critics Choice and SAG, and leave that slot for Danielle Deadwyler. I’m rooting for Michelle Yeoh all the way. Love Tar, but feel Blanchett doesn’t have to win this one; it’s merely ornamental at this point to her illustrious career, but if Cate wins, I wouldn’t be mad. I am upset that Danielle was snubbed. Also, why was Janelle Monáe snubbed from actress in a comedy/musical. Glass Onion was a big ensemble, but it’s central protagonists were what tied it all up.
