    I had a really tough time advancing en pointe. i wore the thickest silicone padding, but after i switched to ouch pouches i've improved so much. To much padding is going to hurt you more than help you

    • @kathryn_morgan
      @kathryn_morgan  Před 7 lety +108

      Oh yes- thick padding is not helpful! A lot of people don't realize that.

    • @marie-vy4mc
      @marie-vy4mc Před 5 lety +23

      I used to just stuff my shoes with tissue paper because pointe shoes are expensive enough. Then I bought some really thick padding and it hurt way more than tissue paper.
      So basically just use tissue paper if you're broke or something.

    • @Emerald.She-Ra
      @Emerald.She-Ra Před 4 lety +12

      The trick is to balance out the space. For instance if you have really tapered feet with a long big toe, you want to ensure the padding fills the gap/s where the short toes don't reach. If you just pad the big toe alone, you're still going to feel that pressure.

    • @annastenson1299
      @annastenson1299 Před 4 lety +1

    • @hannahbanana4389
      @hannahbanana4389 Před 4 lety +3

      I use cotton balls in my ouch pouches because I get a TON of pressure on my big toe, I used the toe covers for a long time and they would rip after two uses. I can’t afford to buy new padding every week! I’m not sure if the cotton is a good idea or if I should just take it out and get used to the pain, I’ve been on pointe for more than a year and I feel like I should be improving at a faster rate...

      @esstown Před 5 lety +7

      Yes, it's actually terrible when a teacher calls out the combinations step by step. It's noisy, distracts from the music, and doesn't allow a student to learn how to remember combinations on their own. I have a teacher that calls out every single move, every time. I wish she would quietly walk around the room giving individual corrections instead. But she stands at the front doing all the exercises herself while calling it out. I think she is using the class to get her own barre and centre work done. There are only 1 or 2 corrections in the whole hour and a half, and they usually addressed to the class in general, but to no one in particular, and always after the exercises are finished.

    The interesting thing is that while I've never done ballet in my entire life, some of theese exercises are perfect for me, as an equestrian🙃
    Horse riding requires alot of strength in the tiny muscle groups, and while it is probably nowhere near as demanding as ballet, we put a huge amount of pressure on our knees, feet and ankles.
    It is interesting that incorporating some of theese exercises(of course without fully going on point) has really helped me strengthen my body, after recovering from a pelvis- and leginjury 🙃

      Abi Turner Before doing those exercises en pointe, do them on demi pointe. Although you’re an equestrian it might be that your feet aren’t yet strong enough for pointes. There’s some training without pointed required first, depending on how strong your feet already are. Might take three months or so

    I started pointe pretty late, because I took 1,5 years break from ballet because my teacher was bad. I started ballet again because of a friend and I have a pretty nice teacher now. She let me go en pointe after two weeks of ballet. I know it was early, but I started to strengh and strech my feet every day. I got my first pair of pointe shoes and I was sooo bad. It was frustrating. My foot was not streched enough, but I really wanted to be good at pointe bc we trained for a show and I didn't want to be the only one on demi-pointe. I searched the whole internet, just to find good pointe exercises and I didn't found a single one that was really helpful. Then I found this video. Long story short: it helped me sooo much! I have taken 3 full years and 4 months (including over the summers). I just got on pointe a week ago! Had my first class yesterday. So far so good. Not sure how far I will be able to take it but to have earned the shoes is awesome! They are so pretty! And I do have some foot issues (surgery on my right foot and I have a rod in my right foot and a nub on the big toe and arthritis on the left foot... lol... ) and I am curvy (size 14)... needn't to lose a few pounds probably makes it harder too. Anyway, if you want to do it you should try!

I've been dancing regularly, just not on pointe, and now I'm afraid I've lost some strength. But now I want to get back into it, and that seems a perfect place to start! Thanks!

    I am a guy and my teacher is really critical about me dancing on point. So after being rejected every time I bring the topic up I decided to just do it at home.
    I just bought my pointshoes a few days ago, it feels really easy and intuitive so far, but I know that I should go slow and steady.
    I am still recovering from a sprained ankle from a few months ago, so I can't properly point my left foot which kinda sucks as well. So I am doing a lot of one foot exercises (especially training spins on my right foot) and no jumps for a few weeks now

      I've been en pointe for about a year now, and my toes still occasionally go numb. But, it could be because you are wearing to much padding, or your box is to small. When I either wear to much padding or my box is to small I can't feel my toes. However, I've since stopped wearing padding (I tried it a few times, and it just didn't work) and I now just tape my toes and go and I rarely have numb toes anymore.

      + Harley Quinn Same! I had been en pointe for 4 or 5 years before I figured it out. Now I only wear gel caps on my big toes and I can pointe and really use my feet *so* much better. I started with Ouch Pouches but the seam *killed* my toes. After 3 or 4 years I switched to Gellows which didn't have a seam, but I still couldn't feel the floor. I'm considering getting Lamb's Wool but I'm in no hurry since just the gel caps is working fine.

    Hello Kathryn! I've been doing continuous ballet classes several hours a week for the past 2 1/2 years now, and I finally got permission from my instructors to start pointe work with a few other girls from my class a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, in early development, I went through several stages of not walking correctly (overpronating, walking pigeon-toed, walking turned-out, you name it) which ultimately resulted in my arches not forming correctly (rigid arches). My instructors are aware that my releve isn't as high as most girls, and the flatness of my arches (I can't fix this, believe me, I've tried) but they still put me on pointe because they believe I show a great work ethic, good balance and nice strength. I went for my first fitting, they didn't say anything. Then, later that day when I met with my teachers, after seeing how I could not get over my box she gave me a brief lecture about how hard it is going to be for me to actually get over my box. However, she told me with hard work I could pull it off. I didn't think much of it until my first pointe class a week later with a substitute instructor. There were girls with crazy arches, very advanced girls that were using the class to warm up, my other classmates, and girls that had not gotten en pointe that we're giving me death glares. There I was, messy-haired, sweaty and nervous, barely able to pull of a releve from first let alone 20 releves in second. During the last five minutes she had us walk across the floor on releve (responsible, huh?) and I had to explain that this was something I couldn't do, and stood and watched the other girls stumble, but still able to do it. It was heartbreaking and humiliating. It left me wondering if I would ever be able to get over my box. Do you have any advice/tips from yourself or from someone you know?
