Is there a reason you don’t do it in a bowl?
That's a great question, and there are a few reasons. Primarily, I don't want to have more tools that will need to be cleaned when I'm done. I also don't want to lose any residual paint that I can't completely transfer from the bowl to the slab. The mulling has to happen on the slab because it's a process that requires pressure between two abrasive surfaces. A bowl might work for the initial mixing in of the pigment, but I don't believe it would actually make the process any easier. It's not like dissolving sugar into water. It's more like emulsifying oil and water. Just takes time and pressure. :] Thanks for asking!

Mia Schoenfeld she uses a regular glass slab, but sands it down so the pigment can be pushed out more

Paint making videos are kind of like cooking shows for me. I don't really want to make the stuff myself, but I'm so fascinated by the people who take the time to master the craft! I admire your patience!

this is all so interesting, i wish i had the work space (also energy lol) to do something like this haha. thanks for sharing your process~! I heard gouache is made by adding more white, though i wonder if it'll be harder to control the saturation that way.
Oh gosh, thank you Qinni!! I think gouache may have a specific chalk ingredient that increases the opacity while maintaining saturation! I saw it made that way once, at least. Thanks so much for checking out the video - I genuinely admire your work and I hope you're doing well. ❤❤
@@arleebean High quality gouache is often ground less fine and has less binder to pigment than watercolour, and has no added chalk too! Dunno if that is helpful in any way. I'd be so excited to see you make gouache!

I think the amount of mulling you had in this video was perfect. It didnt feel too long and it was SO satisfying and relaxing. I love watching these. It makes me want to try it someday

honestly the more mulling you share, the more i understand the reality of making paints. this is an adventure i want to take one day, so please share with us. because its definitely therapeutic too.
I had no idea people do this, very admirable and impressive, it gives you a perspective of what the old masters had to go through, they were masters for a reason, but back then they had to make their paint and had all the time in the world and not many distractions, great video!
They definitely didn’t have the time, there just wasn’t another option. They’d have guilds of people and very small children mixing up multiple colors at once.
In later periods, maybe they had time but I doubt it either. I think they just did all the mixing and would keep tweaking it. They may not have distractions from phones but they definitely had all types of distractions. Human brains can make distractions.💀

Historically, red has always been a difficult color. Even mercury based at a point.
It wasn't blue? I have read the contrary: that red, white and black are the easiest colors to do, and that's why they have so much symbolic meaning in fairy tales and mythology.
@@blakcnagisa01 it's blue in fact - or bright yellow at the very least. Red was probably the easiest color to obtain as red pigments are very common in nature
@@lore_nza true! I remembered this documentary about natives of Australia and their art, the prominent color was red and was made from the earth.

yeah but it'll save you more in the long run
Also as an artist, making your own paint helps you figure out which colors cater to your ideal swatch.
The most expensive thing will be the pigments
@@strawberry8099 how long is the long run? That's always an important question. Economically, accounting for inflation most things don't actually work out better
@@Jayariee buying paint over time and spending more on pigments which will be more expensive but give you more bang for your buck and you can choose your colors and adjust to your liking, I just personally think it's better and save you a little bit more money but it's really a preference :p

It is so "RED" ima in love.. we learnt in school a lot like how to make drawing coal, how to gild leather, how to male own wool paper, even how to make paint that was used in cave drawings.. and ton of artistic stuff but we never learnt how to make watercolors :/

That shade of red is hard to find in anything - lipstick, fabric, proper paints.... It's a fascinating, nearly neon red. Not quite Fire Engine, but not a true red either. It's truly an interesting color.
I am curious if you ever try mica powders in your paints, whether as a main ingredient or a minor additive for sparkle. Do you do primarily solid, plain color pans? Or do you get adventurous with the shimmer, glitter, and metallic?

I personally put the pigment before adding (progressively) the binder, it's like cooking, you incorporate the ingredients easily.
It might be easier to mix the pigment and binder in a bowl, then pour it onto the glass to mull. Just an idea since you said the pigment did not mix easily. 💚
I've seen soap makers blend first with a spatula, then a stick blender, and then add their pigment in with a spatula and it might be a different medium, but the idea seems to work out

I have a question. Is it possible to over mull the paint and if so, does it affect the paint any?
treefrog ochs I don't think so... Maybe the color would be more flowy but that's not a disadvantage. But if you don't Mull enough I think the color would be granular
@@kevinmoreira4583 Mulling makes sure all of the pigment is dispersed into the binder. If it isn't mulled enough, the unbound pigment can rub off the paper. Granulation, as far as I'm aware, isn't related to mulling.
Over mulling is actually a thing. If you mull to the point where the fluid/wetness is too minimal and then keep going you can actually grind the pigment down further and make it duller. A lot of natural pigments have a sweet spot on pigment granule size. Too small and they are dull and lifeless, too large and they don't make good paint. It would be a LOT of work to do this... most grinding actually occurs in a mortar and pestle. I have purchased a few pigments and hand to grind them more because they weren't perfectly ground for watercolour.

I know there's these kilns/ovens for resin that people use, the majority of resins dries faster and therefore has better results when you apply heat to then, maybe you should check out if these same kilns can work to speed to drying process of your watercolors if you really wanna making paint making into a investment. And i also understand why there such few reds in watercolor brands that scratch my itch, if it's this hard by hand it must not that much easier even with the machines.

You'd probably have to scrape your blender really well, but it might save time, as blenders are made to... Well, blend.

Love the color! It might be easier to mull the color if you first mix the pigment with water and alcohol to a quark like consistency with the pallet knife, then you can add the binder and mull. This will also improve the dispersion in the overall paint (you’ll have more color when you dilute it with water). Really like that you make videos about paint making!

Dats a lot of paint in that jar at the end. Have you ever considered getting empty metal tubes and filling those with your paint? I personally like being able to pour my own pans or working with fresh paint.

This has been a popular question, and it’s mostly because I don’t want to have another surface/container to clean up. The slab works, it just takes a little time.

Now THAT is serious dedication and love. SO beautiful and satisfying (not to you, I’m sure!). This is ridiculously cool, and I can’t even begin to fathom the amount of effort and heart that goes into making your paints. So glad this showed up in my recommended! ❤️
