But I feel sad for people who make living selling watercolors.
@@moonlightgator541 I bet less than 2% of people who watch these videos will actually go to the expense and bother of making their own watercolors, especially when you can easily end up making more than enough of a color to last several lifetimes! What's great about watching the process is that gives people a much greater appreciation for handmade watercolors and a deeper understanding of what goes into the paints (binder ingredients) and how the different colors are made (single pigment vs. combinations of pigments).
@@zeldacheri 100% agree with you, most have no idea how it's made, and your so on about appreciating the process.
Besides that she loves doing it. What is better than that! Isn't that what You Tube is all about, doing what you love and sharing it with others.

@@moonlightgator541 you shouldn't feel bad. I've seen people sell $500 watercolor palettes at $10 cost their pocket. It would be nice to see someone come out with a lower price point palette that everyone can afford and enjoy!
hi! Fellow paint maker here. First of all: Im already a fan of these series! Making paints is just so relaxing.
Secondly, you can prevent the shrinking of drying pans for some part. When you mull the paint longer it'll become more paste-like, so a bit more firm. When it reaches this point and you pour it into pans it will shrink less! it's not 100% foul proof, but it worked for me in the past
Ah, that’s such a fantastic idea! I had definitely noticed that the paint becomes thicker the longer it’s out on the slab, but I hadn’t connected that to less shrinking! Thank you so much for the tip!
Do you make oil paints? I've been trying to find some phthalo blue pigment and can't seem to find it. Have you tried making watercolors out of woad?
You can also let the paint sit even longer on the slab once your done mulling. Water will evaporate really, really slow.
On some days I mull my paint in the morning and let it sit before I go to bed again. It's still moist enough to give it in pans.
But you should go and see after the paint every few hours and fold them with the palette knife while letting them sit.
that what I was thinking twycross, Arleebean though I am not an expert in this, why not leaving it on that glass enough time so it have more consistency or thikness, measure the time, which will vary depending on the room temp., and humidity level ... then the number of refilling will go down.. how about plant based paint.. would it be of same quality and same procedure? thanks
@@sutil5078 I am making plant-based pigments and the color ends up being similar to earth pigments but they are less opaque. It is the same procedure in making the watercolors though.
May I request that you make a video on how you prepare all the materials to make this, like the binder and what would be the recommended tool, along with some recommendations from the pigment to binder ratio

Aahhhh! I love your color selection at the end of the video. You don't tend to see a lot of the modern colors in handmade paints and you have some of my favorites 😍 also thanks so much for talking about Earth Pigments. I wanted to get some pigments from them when I thought I could make my own paints and couldn't find any information/reviews. Can't wait to see what you make with these, and I'd love to try our some of them if you do decide to sell then :)
I feel like the information that you have on your channel, specifically about the pigments and how they react, would be very helpful for those looking to make their own watercolours.

Your colors are beautiful! I hope you do decide to sell them. I love your Payne’s grey because it does NOT granulate. Sharing this with your audience is very generous of you. It looks like a lengthy endeavor that not everyone is inclined to attempt. Best wishes to you and much success.
Same. I'm not a fan of granulating colours and this is a gorgeous colour I'd happily use!
Oh so it's binder that's on the top of my acrylics and watercolor when I dont use it for a while.

My only question is about their lightfastness. Do you know how lightfast they will be while making them? Can you influence it somehow?

youshimimi youshimimi I would have to guess it depends on the pigment and how the elements of the powdered materials react to that exposure to sunlight. For example, in gemstone based pigments: amethyst has a tendency to lose color when exposed to sunlight, and eventually yellow. Lapis lazuli (ultramarine blue) also has a tendency to fade after extended exposure. Unless there’s some kind of chemical reaction during mulling, the lightfastness should directly correlate to how well the original material holds up to sunlight.

Really fun and relaxing to watch (love the dreamy music). I don't think I've watched a paint making video ever but it was first on my suggested list today and why not? Not something I'll try myself but I found it fascinating. The comments about pouring and the mulling characteristics of the various pigments was very interesting to me. And the pigments looked lovely. Looking forward to seeing more of this from you. Thanks Arleesha.

It's nice to see another artist join the journey of paint making. PS it consumes you!!! I love making paint it's definetly helped me understand and appreciate watercolours more. In terms of trouble shooting the bad news is apart from a few simple problems most difficulties with it can only be answered by practice/experience. It's hard to explain but you get to a point where you can feel if the paint is right/wrong a bit like when cooking and you know whether your food is cooked right. I love the colours you've made and I'm glad that youre enjoying this process.
A little note to those saying about disclosing recipes etc, whether it's a commercial brand or an artisan each paint maker has their own binder which contributes to the behaviour and quality of the paint. Every handmade brand is different and has it's own signature. We don't want to give away our signature, as Arleesha says it's taken her a lot of time and practice to get to her stage, it has taken even longer for a those of us who sell our paints to get our formulas right. It takes a lot of hard work, time, trial & error and money to get there. Why would we let others jump the line and prosper from our hard work?
Oh wow you did great! I love watching people making paints! 😍 The results look so good! When I was in art school my teacher told us how to make watercolours and oil paints ( which is much easier ), of course it's not that she is a paintmaker, she is a restorer and to restore old painting she makes paints herself. Since she knows about chemistry sometimes she adds stuff she has in the lab into the watercolour binder I don't know what I don't remember, but it was so interesting! It's a lot of work, but it's so relaxing and satisfying! I would love to see more videos like this! 😍 ( She also uses a lot of Kremer stuff )

After watching In Liquid Color, Oto Kano, Mind of Water Color, Eve Bolt et. alt. to get deeper insight in aquarel paints I get this notification about you making watercolor. Love it. Learn from it... (have pigments somewhere :) ) What a beautiful set of colors you made!
while watching this video, i got so overwhelmed by the beauty and ideas for making my own watercolours(because i've wanted to make my own for quite a while but could NOT for the life of me find any information) that i needed to take a break! This was a goldmine of information that i haven't been able to find anywhere else, and would greatly enjoy it if you would make a series about homemade watercolours, and how to do it, and where to source pigments and other things, and how to figure out what you're doing, and basically just everything! i am such a slut for information on how to make your own versions of things that are most commonly found only from big companies, and not sustainable, like clothing or watercolours. this video came up in my recommended, and i am so glad it did! i will now subscribe! goodbye!

Oh man...it is so relaxing and satisfying watching you mull the paint and then scrape it up! And I agree with other commenters...I love the fact that you’re not keeping all of this information to yourself for personal gain. While I totally hope you do find a way to benefit from your hard work, I think its great to share the process and encourage others to expand their artistic knowledge base!
This has been a huge help for me.. I am an artist but I enjoy the supplies almost more than the art. I found a mini mulling kit in some local surplus store and really have no clue what I’m doing. I just know I wanted to make colors I want, but never see. I knew I would run out of the binder in the kit eventually and so your videos have been a great help! Thank you!

Yep this feeling when making the paints myself and using them is really great... but i would like to make the pigments too myself... go out search for minerals and other stones ect. And than hmm... i think they have a machine what can grind and completele take out the liquid in it... but i dont know where to get something like that... about the price i dont even want to think about 😏 but great videos im always happy to see new😁

So happy to have found you. I’ve been watercolor painting for many years but just recently got interested in mulling. It’s the actual mulling that has me mesmerized. So soothing.
As a pharmacist with compounding experience, I can tell you... it would be much easier (and the paint would be more consistent and uniform throughout) if you placed your powders in a mortar and pestle and triturated, or ground, the powders together. At that point, you can dump the powders onto the glass and make a little well in the center. Then, you’ll want to combine your liquids in another bowl or measuring cup or whatever you have around... and slowly add it to the well you made in the powder. While adding the liquid, use a spatula to mix and fold between each pour.
I have been so busy so I have just gotten around to watching this video (finally!) and I am so excited by this process and this information ❤️ I am so full of gratitude that you would put in the effort to share this with us, and I am itching to learn even more about pigments and binders and the entire process, honestly. But for now I might actually just sit down and paint!

Just came home from a 10 hour uni day feeling exhausted, and this is EXACTLY what i needed. I always love listening to your soothing voice, and watching you mull paint is both satisfying and super interesting. I love that youre going on this journey and how open and detailed you are planning on being, since making watercolour paints is really interesting to me (even though i won't be able to do it for a few more years, being a broke student living in a small rented flat). I love your ultramarine blue and the pattern it created when it flowed into the magenta, and i adore the indian red!! Can't wait to see what else you'll share with us on this journey. Oh my gosh I am so excited that you are doing this!! I was interested in making paints and like you said there is NO information out here about the specifics of making the binder, or how much pigment to start with and ratios, where to find pigments, what pigments to use etc. I want to make my own watercolors for personal use as well and am very excited to see this series. Thanks for sharing. I've been making my own watercolor paints for several months from minerals and other foraged materials. I make lake pigments from plant materials for my Texas Wild Color watercolor paints. I like how it combines art, science and hiking in the wild.

Super cool! I experimented with making acrylics out of ground pastels and molding paste but it was limited thanks to my lack of a muller. I ended up having basically really grainy paint. Also from one painter to another I LOVE your addition of the pigment codes!

I saw you post this on instagram and clicked as soon as i saw! Those colours are soo nice they look so vibrant and smooth, really nice colours that you selected! I especially like the yellow iron oxide, warm yellow and buff titanium, those colours just speak to me. I really like my cool blues and greens but when it comes to watercolours I find that I lean towards the warm yellows and earth tones.
That blue is a true representation of cauliflowering!!! Gorgeous colors, can not wait to see more.

Ok, can I just say how amazing your ethics (?) are?????? I completely adore how transparent you are in your process, and how you make sure everyone has equal access to this knowledge! Personally, I find it very frustrating when professionals keep everything a secret (and while I completely understand the reason why, it still feels frustrating). I don’t know how much I can express this, but I really appreciate all your work. It’s nice to know how relatively straightforward the paint making process is, so I don’t have to be cheated out of my money if a big corporation overprices a particular color I need(and I’m confident that I can make it myself at the same quality💕). Thank you thank you thank you!!! I’ll definitely be sure to support you in the future if you ever decide to sell these ❤️❤️
