  • Skipping class and surfing go hand and hand. It's a common story that varies lightly from culture to culture and surfer to surfer. While we aren't advocates of skipping class for a session, we'd be lying if we didn't say that it is what built the country of New Zealand's early days of surfing history.
The second installment of "Made in New Zealand," dives into the history of NZ's surfing scene and culture with a handful of pioneers of the Kiwi scene. From homemade water-housing that captured some of the earliest New Zealand surf to meteorology equipment to help with wave predictions, it's clear that even at one of the southern most points of the world, the obsessive love for surfing burned as bright as in California or Hawaii.
We hope you enjoy this deep dive into the early days of NZ surfing in this episode of "Made in New Zealand."

Kehu's last comment nailed it. We've got the talent. We just happen to be at the arse end of the world! And it's pretty hard to leave NZ and live somewhere else. We always get lured back. No place I'd rather live, truth be told:)

DK, Matt Groube, Jessy Praggot and james Reynolds ect and the backyard boys from Piha. Even being at the arse end of the world we still have plenty of people competing in the billabong pro and rip curl classics. I'm one of the backyard boys from Piha but im a skater not a surfer. The Sad thing was watching meth rip through all of these communities.

Brings back a lot of good memories. The cold, the people, the wildness of NZ. Started surfing there and never looked back. Less of the drink and more of the foam. 2017 since my working holiday and still uncrowded.

  • @dpkgray

A great story, it brings back memories!
No disrespect though, it is easy to glorify the early days. I was surfing almost 10 years before 1973 and at quite a few of these spots and many more, a few years after I started. We knew exactly what caused the surf and could generally predict it quite accurately just using the isobar lines on the weather map from the National weather forecast.
The whole CZcams clip makes a good story though, I guess that is the point.

I am in the engineering field for more than 30 years. But, I never forget a comment from one of my clients about 20 years ago, he said: "I heard you are a surf bum," I just didn't understand why he would say something liked that when I worked as hard as every engineer on the project.

Saw Graveyards (near Stent Rd from memory) in some of this footage, remember surfing perfect 5 ' graveyards by myself in the early 80's when I lived in New Plymouth for 2 years. Had some of the best waves of my life on the Taranaki Coast and surfed and skiied on the same day once. Mt Taranaki (Egmont) looked amazing in the background full of snow. A great little series this well done. Fark it was cold in winter time. Why isnt Paige still on the tour she was drilling those backhand re-entries.
