    Dick Emery worked as a driving instructor for BSM before becoming famous as a comedian. A few years later, in the early '70s, I worked as an instructor too at the same branch and one of my pupils was Royce Mills who plays the first pupil in the sketch!

The location for this was Staines swimming baths, Surrey (You can just see a glimpse of the Councils badge on the building). I don’t see Dick Emery as being homophobic or sexist. From what I’ve read he was a sharp observer of character and used it to great comedic effect as evidenced here. I think if the Daily Mail/Daily Express is constantly telling you that “others” are offended by this kind of comedy then eventually you’re going to believe it. But all they’re trying to do (the daily rags that is) is trying to create a bubble for their readers where they feel protected from the nasty modern world. It’s the same thing that Social Media has achieved using AI algorithms. My advice: stop reading newspapers, delete your social media accounts, start talking to real people in the real world, and enjoy a bit of old comedy on YT without being miserable about “politically correct”people or “lefties” or whoever else you think hates you for watching this. Newsflash: they don’t care.

    True genuine comedy! I used to love watching D. E with my parents 😅. He was such a laugh. Compared to the crap these days where they just have no sense and plenty of vulgarity and swearing! I wish life was still like when we were growing up. Kids were innocent and themselves, people had respect for each other. 🌸🕋

    Its over 30 years since he died its about time the bbc devoted a night of TV his honour like the rest of the comedy greats. The other year the ITV did an episode of the Unforgettable series on him 20 minutes odd of tv doesn't really do him justice which is a pity as he came across as a very interesting person.

    He was indeed a character actor, in the same league as Ronnie Barker. Watching this reminded how funny and clever he was. I never heard of him being "much maligned", I always thought he was highly respected. Often when I stuff up, I say to myself "Dad.....I fink I go' i' wrong again"!

    All this was filmed in Staines Middlesex. By the court house and indoor swimming pool. Used go swimming there every week when I was a kid and recognised the buildings straightaway when I saw it on TV. Dick also lived 15mins from my town in Weybridge, not far from Staines. A very popular resident at the time. Classic TV memories!

      @punkgift Před 6 lety +22

      Marque Lethenstrom - Where to start?
      1. Depiction of camp gay man would be offensive to homosexuals
      2. Hints at sexual activity would be considered making light of sexual assault
      3. Cigarette smoker would be encouraging smoking
      4. Woman showing her cleavage offensive to women
      5. Lack of ethnic minorities, and lack of women in positions of authority
      6. Portrayal of vicar would be allowed, but leader of any other religion would be considered offensive
      7. Man dressed as woman offensive to transgender
      8. Reference to "driving like a man" would be sexist (intimation that women are worse drivers than men)
