I love the soundscape of the workplace. Almost meditative with such tedious tasks. It makes me imagine to the past; what would they think to themselves while making these? What did they daydream? ..also great quality recording :)

Trade's which their fathers would teach their children. That's what has gone teaching in school's. Bring it to school's. Bricklayer, Woodwork, Metal fabricators, Plumbing, Electricians, Basic learning then college to get completed.

Shouldn't this all small ropes be warm up in hot water before twisting? This would stretch them before and shrink after being twisted so the tension would make the bond much stronger.

Why do this when the tensile strength and working life of modern rope is so much longer for I'm sure much cheaper than bespoke rope.

      WolfeBane84 because it's "Artisanal"

Because hipsters will buy anything stupid like this.
This is not bespoke, it is simply hand made. Bespoke is custom made, especially clothing. This is not custom made.

WolfeBane84: It's for use in historical ship restoration. To make the rigging as it was in a restoration project, aswell as keep the know-how alive.

no yuo: all the ropes are custom made for it's use - some parts of a rigging will need a harder closed rope, some parts need to be loose. In contrast to the industrial made ropes, these ropes are all made for their specific use. That being said, the reasoning behind producing rope in this more time consuming way is tightly connected to the wish of preserving traditional skills and knowledge.

I was always wondering how they are making line first from fibers that it can hold together under tension.
