Fremad II Restoration - Compilation (2016-2020)

  • In 2008 the fishing vessel Fremad II(1888) was listed by The Directorate for Cultural Heritage. In 2016 the ship was put on our slipway, and it soon became clear that it would be a more comprehensive restoration that the preliminary condition report had estimated. On friday the ship was launched! We’ve made a compilation of all the videos from the restoration of Fremad here:
    /
Her har me samla alle videoane frå restaureringa av Fremad II:
Video: Silje Ensby / Hardanger fartøyvernsenter
Launch footage: Kristian Wolski, Mads Dragsund, Kolbjørn Ask, Lars A. Oma.

I am a master mariner, gaining my certificate in Hong Kong in 1970 with the Hong Kong harbour authorities in a very stiff series of written, practical & verbal tests. All my father's side of my family have been mariners from at least my G G Grandfather. To me, shipwrights are the top of the tree where joinery is concerned. To watch these young guys, masters of their trade utilize it & produce this picture of perfection still has me in awe even now @ 73 years of age. I salute each & every one of you, BRAVO she is beautiful a credit to you all. 👏👏👏👏👏👏

This is absolutely mind boggling. The fact that the original plan came out of someone’s mind and the builders had no where near the modern tools that these folks had. The men that restored this had pieces to mimic but that doesn’t take anything away from their skill set! They were phenomenal!
    What a great watch!

Building a construction that is curved in all planes is a whole other ball game than house construction. You really have to be Sharp and focused. Great job and heritage preservation! Western Norway sits on a unbroken chain of craftmanship of wooden boat building, handed down from shipsmith to apprentice over at least 1500 years.
