  • The Liadou was the typical knife of the winemakers in the Marcillac region in Southern France. The small cutlery company D'Albrac in Laguiole revived the design of this traditional regional knife.

What a fascinating subject for a video. I had no idea that wine makers had their own style of knife. That is definitely a very French style knife IMHO. It reminds me a little bit of the older Opinels. Thank you so much for the knife history lesson, Stefan. Every time I watch one of your videos, I feel like I'm watching/listening to a tenured professor give a lesson on something he is truly passionate about. It's always nice to hear from you Stefan.

Moin and welcome back, Stefan! It's good to enjoy a typical Schmalhaus video after such a long time.
This knife isn't an elegant one as you've said. But it is for sure an honest working knife for a winegrower.
I wouldn't buy a Le Liadou for myself, because it is to big for my personal taste but it is definitely a very special knife that would enrich any knives collection.

    Willkommen zurück im Geschäft,Stefan. :-)

    Stephan

Welcome back Stefan! ...and what a lovely knife to show us on your return :-) I personally think that is a very elegant knife, although I do admit that it is a much simpler design than a traditional Laguiole. So, the knife is great, your review is great, the workshop looks great... what about the wine? Was that great too?

Thank you, Jim! A few weeks ago I ordered four bottles of Marcillac wine. The plan was to drink a glass of wine during the knife review. But when I finally got around to recording the video all four bottles were empty (as you can see at 0:56). Does this answer your question? ;-)

Does the blade edge rest against the backspring in the Liadou d'Albrac knife? By the way, I have seen knives like this in the Napa wine region of California but instead of being folding knives, they are fixed blades. Nearly identical in size and shape.

Friend, greetings from Brazil. You could answer me a question?
I am Italo-Brazilian, and I wonder what are folding knives, Fixed Blade Knives, traditional of Italy ??
I ask this because here in Brazil our traditional knife is the knife Sorocabana. Thank you for your attention.

    • @StefanSchmalhaus
      @StefanSchmalhaus  Před 9 lety +1

Unfortunately, there isn't a short answer to your question because there is a rich history of traditional Italian knives. For starters, take a look at the knives from Consigli (www.consigliscarperia.it/), Saladini (www.coltelleriasaladini.it/) and Berti (www.coltellerieberti.it/).

"coltello rasolino siciliano", "coltello sfilatino siciliano", "coltello sanfratellano". These are the first coming to my mind but there are many more. They were surely familiar tools for your ancestors particularly if they were, as I suppose, simple/working class people. There is also a typical "Neapolitan knife" but I am not familiar with it. Google is your friend!
