  • This is a super-detailed explanation and cockpit orientation in the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior Cockpit from Polychop.
    This is for nerds. Most of the stuff I talk about doesn't have much application in the game, but it'll give you some background information on some of the systems and switchology. This is Pt 1 of a multi-part series starting from engine start, through a runup.

    I fly both real (student) and virtual helicopters and I definitely appreciate the depth of the explanations here. I want to know why and how something works in the simulator, not just what it does. Thanks for sharing your IP knowledge! In another life I could have been flying Kiowas for the Australian Army (before they retired them) but instead I find myself working up the civilian route. In a twist of fate, the army auctioned off the old Kiowas on the civilian market (sensitive military equipment removed) and my flight school is currently getting one rated for non-charter flights. I'll definitely be getting turbine endorsed in that thing!
    I assume there is no governor in the traditional sense? The FADEC handles engine rpm and fuel flow therefore covers the role the governor would normally play, but I assume mechanically it works the same way? Electric motor open/close fuel valve?
    Thanks!

    Regrettably, I never flew any aircraft during my tour in the Airforce in 1974-1976. I only flew a desk. But DCS has afforded me the opportunity to experience the pilot seat in both fixed wing and rotor wing and I love both, but helicopters are my favorite. Really looking forward for this module and the Apache module to come out.

    I am in awe at how much detail you guys have put into this aircraft. While I will admit to being a tad warey about Polychop, after the disappointment that was the gazelle. I do have to admit, that I am extremely interested in this aircraft, and to be fair I can see myself pre ordering or purchasing on day one.
    Please please please don’t mess the FM up on this module. This really could be a game changer for the small helo side of DCS so long as you get the FM right.

    • @Barundus
      @Barundus  Před 4 lety +1

      Acknowledge your concerns, and respond by saying "They're doing their best". I am NOT a representative of PC, and I don't want to speak for them, officially. They can do that much better than I.
      DCS is a constrained system, and as I understand the tech behind it; it is at its core not designed with rotary-wing aerodynamics in mind. PC has to work within the constraints of the base DCS code. In essence, it's like working with code designed to run a washing machine to work on a television.
      Rotary wing aerodynamics are MUCH more complicated than fixed-wing. I imagine coding it is too.
      That said, there is a group of dedicated, actual real-world KW pilots who are involved in every aspect of "making it right". We love this aircraft, and think it's super-cool there is an opportunity to share this love with a wider audience who may get a kick out of it, and we want to see it done right!

    • @Barundus
      @Barundus  Před 4 lety +2

      I also have to ask: what do you mean by "don't mess up the flight model"?
      I've seen a lot of negative comments about the Gazelle. I haven't flown it. I have no basis of comparison (virtual or IRL). I wouldn't know know what "right" feels like.
      Are you saying "Don't make it hard to fly?". Because guess what, helicopters are hard to fly.
      Realism comes with drawbacks.
      If they made every aspect of the systems "real", I imagine it would lose the "fun-factor".
      Even I don't want to have to load the COMSEC in the radios every mission, or perform a laser boresight procedure, or conduct a Built-In-Test of the weapons systems every time I turn the game on. Same goes for the flight model. Compromises must be made.

    • @CakePrincessCelestia
      @CakePrincessCelestia Před 4 lety

      @@Barundus The flight model in the Gazelle feels like it has some FBW, or let's say, it's like flying a 90's helicopter sim like Jane's Longbow on easy FM. You bank the thing 15° left and pitch 5° down, it stays there all day long with stick centered. No dynamics other than your actual input. On top of that, with a Force Feedback stick (which literally acts as you described with the Force Trim switch on, just with zero friction), there is some weird hard-coded deadzone of somewhere around 5% of stick deflection where you can see the stick (and RCtrl+Enter overlay) move, but nothing actually happening, then as you deflect the cyclic past those 5%, suddenly you get that 5+% of input, making the controls extremely inaccurate. Since the Gazelle is extremely maneuverable and sensitive to cyclic input, it almost acts as if you'd be flying the thing with keyboard only. But well, as far as I could see on DCS: OH-58D videos as of yet, PC obviously left those issues behind and will update the Gazelle after the KW has been released. I'm confident to get a decent module as soon as it drops :)

    • @cowboy10uk
      @cowboy10uk Před 4 lety

      @Barundus, No no not at all. It’s got nothing to do with the gazelle feeling like it’s hard to fly, it is actually the complete opposite. The Gazelle flight model feels like it is on rails, there is no feeling on momentum, or weight in the helo. Appreciate she’s a small fast helo and will fly and feel differently than the other helos in the sim I.E. Huey or MI8. BUT it just doesn’t feel right. I know that doesn’t mean a lot, but there is just no challenge with the FM of the Gazelle. Now to be fair, the gazelle might in real life fly like it feels in the sim, it might have such a great SAS system, that it just goes where you point it, I’m no pilot, so I can’t really comment, I’m just aware of the controversy of the Gazelle Flight Model, and I appreciate that even Polychop has admitted it’s not right.
      Now you obviously are an expert in the Kiowa, you have had experiences in her and gained a massive amount of experience flying that aircraft in all aspects and weathers, including fighting with her as I understand. So if you tell me, the Kiowa is right, and this is a true representation of the aircraft, then that is all I can ask for. I adore Helos, but sadly apart from being a ex refuelled for them when I was in the RAF, the closest I can ever dream of flying them is in DCS, which is why I’ve paid money to purchase a collective rather than use a throttle and a cyclic. I want the most realistic experience that is possible when it comes to helo flying. I appreciate Helos are difficult to fly and operate, I appreciate that the skill level to use one is significantly higher than fixed wing, which is excatly why I enjoy the challenge of learning to fly Helos in DCS.

    Amazing video, thanks so much Barundus. I especially loved your little detail tidbits like setting the airframe to cold with the gun breach closed to prevent FOD ingress :)
    I have a bunch of questions / remarks, hope you dont mind, feel free to skip them:
    1. At 33:00, what is the "ARMED STANDBY" button / indicator used for, seeing as you already have a standby on the master arm?
    2. At 52:00, I presume you need to have the Remote ICS switch on and press the button on the Collective to talk to them?
    3. Perhaps I missed it or already forgot it with so much info :P, but what does the blank button underneath the RFD do?
    4. Any plans on working with the SRS guys to implement the Radio systems on the OH-58D? They are quite talented but the OH-58D radios are quite unique and many, especially with the likes of the SatCom radio which I dont think we have seen before in DCS (?).
    Lastly, can I just comment how cool it is that we get an OH-58D in DCS and how awesome it is to see driven people like you make it? Dedication to making stuff like the IR spotlight work is selling this so much for me right now, thanks so much and good luck!

    • @Barundus
      @Barundus  Před 4 lety +2

      1) The Armed/STBY indication is an error. It should only display when there is power, so on a cold aircraft, you wouldn't see it there. With power, it should only display either "ARMED" or "STBY" depending on the ACP Master switch position.
      2) With the Remote ICS switch to the "ON" position, the ground crew station goes into a "HOT MIC" condition and the audio from the ground station is heard in the pilot's headsets.
      3) Not sure what you mean by the "blank button under the RFD". If you're referring to the larger button that's slightly to the left and under the RFD; that's the FADEC AUTO/MAN switch. It will illuminate with power, showing either AUTO in green, or MAN in amber, depending on whether you press it.
      4) No idea what the plan for radio integration is. I'd have to defer to the developers. I'm just like Tyrion Lannister: I drink and I know stuff.

    Great video, this really is priceless information to military aviation enthusiasts. I'm wondering about two things though:
    1. You mentioned that helicopters like the Blackhawk or the Apache don't have the traditional twist grip for manual throttle control, but separate levers instead. How on earth does the pilot manage rotor RPM manually in case of FADEC failure in these helos? Wouldn't your left hand constantly have to switch between the collective and the throttle levers?
    2. I'm surprised to hear that the cyclic stick would move forward if let go within flight. I figured that due to asymmetry of lift, the aerodynamic forces work to push the aft part of the rotor disc down, resulting in the pilot having to increasingly push the stick forward with increasing speed (or trim accordingly).

    • @Barundus
      @Barundus  Před 4 lety

      It becomes a crew-coordination task. The pilot not on the controls will manipulate the throttle levers as necessary to maintain rotor RPM matched to power demand.

    Mentioning how you have to start throttling the aircraft manually if the engine management system conks out, how would you do this in a heli which has throttle levers like an apache? It seems like you'd need an extra pair of hands.

    • @Barundus
      @Barundus  Před 3 lety +1

      You take the affected engine to "lockout", which is a special position in the throw of the levers. This in effect puts it in manual mode. The idea is then to place the lever in a physical position where the fuel-flow matches the demand. This has to happen within a couple seconds or the rotor droops/overspeeds. You can match the required demand either by moving the throttle position, or moving the collective to match the fuel-flow.

    Hey man, great vids. I have a question. I am currently 3d modeling a Kiowa collective stick which I'm going to 3d print and add to my current DIY collective I built for DCS. Could you tell me what the RMT ICS button does on the collective? I don't think you went over that. Also, I've seen pictures of other kiowas that have something different in that spot, in some pictures it looks like a toggle switch. I appreciate any info.
