  • A much-awaited new episode of Kev's Kitchen, featuring @jacquesinthegarden and the over-abundance of carrot and turnips we pulled out of the garden this past week. Not ENTIRELY sure on the turnip quality - a little too juicy - but still a fantastic way to get a lot of produce prepped. More encouraging was the carrot pickle with the Kraut Source, which you can find in our store.

    Try turning your oven hotter (425 F) putting the turnips on one sheet pan with more space around them so that they roast, not steam, put carrots on another and leave them in the oven until edges are getting golden-brown- this carmelizes the sugars in both and gives that crispier outside, tender inside combination. You can also hit them with a few minutes under the broiler after roasting and get that french fry texture. Works great with sunchokes and parsnips too.

    Turnips, parsnips, and potatoes roast at the same length of time and can be combined. Season with garlic, onion, thyme and rosemary or the previously mentioned Za'atar seasoning. . You may also get more of the taste and texture you were hoping for out of the turnips by having the pan less crowded giving more space between each piece of veg.

    You mentioned the turnips being too "juicy." That's largely due to the crowding of the pan where they ended up steaming, more than they roasted.

    This was hilarious! You guys have a super rapport, which makes these videos so fun to watch. I would like to see more cooking of veggies. I love growing them, but get stumped on different ways to prepare them.

    Love the video, great to see the cooking ideas for the fresh picked crop. I grew the same turnips this year and love them . I chop them and some peppers and make hashbrowns for a lower carb option

    I'm gonna have to grow some turnips... I've never eaten one and wonder what they taste like.

    • @gretroman8235
      @gretroman8235 Před 2 lety

      They taste like a cross between a radish and a potato. I do not like radishes but I like turnips paired with potato mashed or roasted. You should also try parsnips. Close cousin to the carrots.

      @@gretroman8235 Hmmm, I see. I've had radishes and yeah too spicy for me, but if they were milder.... I'll have to try them.

      They aren’t spicy like radishes, the texture is just similar. Grow hakurei turnips if you can get your hands on some seeds, they’re sweet and good both fresh and roasted. sometimes I put them in stews or ramen hot pots too

    Kevin,
    Try pan frying the carrots in butter with a little bit of honey when they are mostly done. Little salt and little garlic.
    Trust me amazing

    Cool! I’ve never tried roasted turnips. I have mine in a pot of stewed collard greens. I roast my carrots with allspice, nutmeg, raw sugar, toasted sesame oil, butter, olive oil, and a little cayenne for a nutty, sweet, spicy kick.

    "Contrary to popular belief" and yet you two are like little garden boyfriends. You know, like how people have "work wives/work husbands". It's a serious work relationship, but you two are nice to each other and best friends type deal. It's so lovely.
