One of the species you never get to see. This lil guy is one of those. Just doing his job, minding his business. My garter snakes are like that here in New Mexico. The lovely diamond backs and prairie rattlers get all the attention. Oddly, just outside proper San Diego where Jacque and Kevin are, is Santee, where I ran into the largest birth of baby rattles in one place!! You really had to watch where you walk.

Writing from Australia: I would NEVER consider just casually clawing through any part of a garden or garden bed without gloves. That is insanity to me. So many snakes, spiders, nasty things that will bite you/potentially kill you here. Makes me shudder watching all this garden work with no gloves.

A suggestion for a permanent berm/swale kind of system to control the runoff: install a hugelkultur mound along the slope. It makes a nice planting area but also catches/slows down the water runoff to allow time for it to percolate into the soil.

It’s a tiny snake! Silly!I hope you have more. Keep them in the strawberries so they can keep the bugs down. Can you put a hose connector to the bottom of your drain so you can direct the water where you want it? If rainwater drains into your reservoir it should settle and keep your water level topped off
