    Just wanted to let you know that your garden straw mulch has literally saved my summer garden. I was using leaf mulch before, but it wasn't as effective. My squash plant leaves, which were drooping almost constantly, are now plump and the new growth is quite green and healthy. Same with one of my pepper plants. The mulch (and in some areas of the garden shade cloth) as well as changing my watering schedule) have really helped things a lot.

    This spring I planted tray after tray of seeds, complete with humidity domes (cold climate so weather is unpredictable, hot one day snow the next!) and nothing came up. I spent so much time and money replanting different seeds and not understanding why nothing was working. I thought because of our climate the humidity dome was a must and in the heat even better! Oooops!

    The ""Farm Daddy" can be made at home. 1 deep tote, 1 length of PVC 2" diameter, soil cloth, rocks. Rocks on bottom, pipe in corner, soil cloth over rocks with hole for pipe, soil above. Water into pipe, not over soil. Same principle, water wicks into soils. They use "wicking beds" in Jordan in the dessert to grow vegetables, small bushes.

    When cloning, I find it best to trim most of the leaves, leaving only half of each, and cutting the lower branches/shoots completely. Doing so reduces transpiration and overcrowding in the dome to minimize mold potential. We want the plant to focus on root growth.

    Some Commercial farmers plant strawberries on one side of a double row, allowing the runners to spread over the season. Then they till the mature plants on one side of the row, leaving only the runners. Repeat yearly, alternating sides, for new and vigorous plants yearly and zero labor towards planting.

    Recently have explored berry leaf harvesting for teas. The younger leaves are what is looked for. You could harvest leaves while doing this. IDea for future how to use natural remedies for pest control. Rosemary, alliums, cinnamon, on and on. Rosemary for example if it is planted how far away works? Can springs be cut and scattered? Do they need to be cut small? How effective and how are sprays made? There is a world of ideas that could come from a line of content like this.

    Hey ya'all,
    I want to install drip irrigation in my garden. Thing is, some areas of my garden are long, straight cottage-style, in ground beds while others are unusually shaped, in ground beds interspersed w/ containers. Whenever I look on irrigation sites, I get quite confused trying to figure out what type(s) would be best for which area. Perhaps you could do an irrigation video explaining the different options & which is best suited for what garden type.
    Thank ya'all in advance for your help!

    If you have not yet pruned the fruit trees, could you give us a follow-up on the fruit tree pruning posted last year on July 5th? It would be helpful to see the effects of last year's pruning, as well as the growth from last year to this one. Pruning trees is a year- long, rather than season-long, process. (This would even be good as an annual update.)
    If the trees have already been pruned, even showing the pruned trees and pointing out where you had to thin them would be good.

    When you moved to the epic homestead, I’m assuming you moved the raised beds, rather than just buying all new ones. What is the process of moving raised beds like? Do you have a video on how you did that?

    • @unnamed2737
      @unnamed2737 Před rokem

      I moved my raised beds this year. I disassembled them and the soil held it’s shape on its own. Then I reassembled it in a different spot in my yard, dropped cardboard and then moved the soil into it. It’s a lot of work but doable.

    • @jennhoff03
      @jennhoff03 Před rokem

      I didn't move houses, but I moved my garden to a different part of the yard. I was shocked how easy it was to pick them up! The dirt can't really stick to it since it's metal, so it's not like trying to get a plant out of a big container or something. They just kind of slid up. If you had to disassemble them, I'm sure it would be a big pain.

    • @epichomesteading
      @epichomesteading  Před rokem +5

      I actually had a charity sale where I sold them all off! But they're shockingly easy to move, you can actually shake the frame and pull up with two people, and the soil falls right out. Then you can either disassemble and reassemble, or truck 'em over to the new spot as-is. Easy!

    I love watching your videos! I live in Zone 10a SW Florida. Someone gifted me a seed starter tray (80 cells) with grow lights for my 3rd grade classroom. Last year we propagated succulents. I want to start the very first week of school having them plant something! :) Is there anything you recommend that would be simple for them to grow, use, and hopefully motivate them to want to continue gardening? Flowers or edible or both :)

    • @kathyv3909
      @kathyv3909 Před rokem +1

      I don't know how much space and time you have, but you could plant the tray representative of a healthy symbiotic garden with flowers that are easy to grow like Zinnias and Sunflowers that will attract pollinators and birds; easy to grow summer squash like zucchinis and yellow squash; easy to grow cucumbers; and easy to grow jack-be-little pumpkins. If you throw in a few varieties of Mammoth or Skyscraper Sunflowers then the vining crops can grow up the tall stalks and then when the heads are spent you can cut them off and line them up for birds to enjoy. If you start early enough you could even plant a second summer harvest or have the children take home their "seeds" to plant at home as a second summer harvest - for instance bush beans. Going a bit further you could plant some crops that germinate well in cold weather and are direct sown like fava beans immediately after winter break, showing the difference a few weeks later between direct sown and transplanting - just be careful with the sensitive tap roots. By the way, thank you for being an elementary teacher, now that's a difficult job!!
