  • Surf Fishing requires casting long distances, this cast will get you over 100 yard casts easily while surf fishing! I have been surf fishing for along time. I have tried just about many casts, but it wasnt till a couple of years ago that i decided to teach myself other surf fishing casts. Well, i found out that for the longest time, i was casting wrong! I learned this cast, and i immediately became a better surf fishing angler!Beach fishing is one of the best modalities, you never know what youre gonna catch while beach fishing. Remember, beach fishing can be dangerous. Always wear pfd while surf fishing.

Hope to see more information from you on the subject in the future. Would love to see a series that shows how distance casting can improve your fishing. Lotta guys, usually ones that can’t cast, downplay the importance of long distance.

Casting long is a how to thing not a how hard you throw.
I practice once a week or so in a field with a different rod each time for about an hour.
Just laying the lead on the ground and doing the mechanics correctly will easily achieve 100+ yards
200 yards is not out of the question with a back swing and loading the rod correctly either.
I know guys get outrageous distances with pendulum casts but that isn't necessary for fishing.

The video you did on reading the surf was also wonderful.
After watching it I took an 8 ft 8 weight Flyrod to the beach and I recognized a cut only about 40 yards from shore.
I waded out 15 to 20 yards and cast a big weighted streamer fly grey and silver.
This resulted in a hit by a 38 inch bull red. It was absolutely fucking cool.
It took me almost 100 yards into the backing and I chased it another 60 yards up and down the beach before landing it 30 min later.
I released it within 2 or 3 minutes.
Had it not been for your video I would never have known that this opportunity was even available so close to shore.

Pier fishing during summer time, where there's a line of Hornell and Harrington surfrods with Squidders and Jigmasters running 30 feet, this type of casting won't be good. Every rod casts a different weight best at certain levels of drop , that bait cannon don't work with any method of distance casting ,fit it as directed by manufacturer instructions and then give it a strong cast but don't release the lever ,you'll notice it's already broke free before you wanted to and you ain't released it to either .if you can bang a weight out then the cannon is no use as it can't hold till you need it to release ,it's gone well before

i don’t know if you mentioned this but for some people just getting in to this power casting. when launching these heavy weights out you need added strength in your line. when using braid you should use a heavy mono shock leader with a fg knot that goes down in to your spool and if you are using straight mono line you should tie a bimini twist. I personally use straight mono for fishing on conventionals and i tie a 20 ft bimini that goes in to my spool for extra stretch and strength so i don’t pop off my weight. a short bimini works fine too i just like to go that extra mile. 50-100lb weight leader usually depending on what oz. Just a little tip to avoid a break off and possible birds nest.

But, i did enjoy the video as you did cover the important points and i would love to try that 10ft rod on a uk beach, when faced with rough tidal conditions and using big squid baits and what a great conger rod that could be. Nice instructional vid! In the process of shopping for a new casting/conventional reel to go on a 12' Penn Battalion. I'll look into what you are recommending in this entire video not just the reel. I currently use Abu Blue Yonder on 12' Battalion and 30lbs mono with a 60lbs mono shock leader and we use fish finder rigs or the cantilever/catapult...I can't recall what the rig is called. I may try the braid/mono shock leader and the rig/leader you recommended. Looks like Ill be able to cast into the second/third gut from the shore using your method. As it is now I wade out quite a ways and maybe get a 40-60yard cast.

Try to upgrade your rod. That will also give you extra distance

You know in australia we have copied what the South African surf fishers use and the average caster will easily crack 150 meters , there is no secret it’s simple , 15 foot assassin rods with low noint reel seat , the low mount opens your cast up and means you have a much smother cast , I use a shimano Trinidad dc 20 , and mostly slide bait with that outfit and sinker weight is around the 10 ounce mark

Hey there bud, sorry in advance for the headache of a question but I just bought my first conventional reel and I can’t make up my mind on how to spool it. Normally it wouldn’t be a big deal but I have a short window to fish & don’t have time to test different setups because I’m working out of town now. Are you still running 50lb braid w/ a 10ft 50lb mono shock leader these days? And what kind of mono is your shock leader? Copolymer or leader material or….? And how does that knot affect your casting distance? I’m thinking about no shock leader so there’s no knot running through the guides. Just a Fluoro leader outside of the guides during cast. I’m just worried about (1) the knot going through the guides and (2) a braid birds nest. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Oh… and how many ounces are you casting? 3, 4, 5, or 6oz? I’ll be planning on casting 6oz so I’m thinking I need 60lb test to handle that.

I seen your fb page about catching the macks, which was excellent btw, then saw this vid....which explains alot...haha, love it! I just got back from fishing the Pacific surf with 2-3 oz weight small cut bait or sand worms, casting 50 yards or so, guessing...but i was bridge and pier fishing the week before in OBX, NC, and casting in the 30-40 range....although wasnt trying for distance in nc...just chuck it out there kinda thing....I'm going to a shooting range tommorow and cast a few, then see what the distances are really like, and reply back...Great vid !

What did you say? That was a 10 foot rod? Three feet was handle leaving you only seven feet in front of the reel. Basically it's a seven foot rod. With the weight slung, you need heavier rod power. Your combo has way too much bend in it for max distance. And those eyelet inserts are cheap. You have excellent form. Great informative video sir.

Try achieving this under a bridge with 15-20 feet of vertical clearance, you wouldn't get that kind of distance with a low arc like that. I have yet to see a video that teaches you how to cast far with low clearance like under a bridge or treetops.

I see the throw is like a golf swing. Wide circle for that centricphical effort. Creating the biggest and widest circle for maximum distance. My issue to that. I can probably fish 10percent of the places here. If I'm lucky. What size line and leader?
