  • Fishing from shore with a Self-Setting Spring Loaded Fishing Rod.. Does it actually work?? Is it any good? Can we catch some fish with this thing? We head out to go saltwater fishing at the beach in north Florida with a mission - catch whatever bites! What kind of fish would be around the beach this time of year? I did not expect for this to happen..

You would have better luck using a j hook for active setting like that. Circle hook is not meant for active setting and can easily slide out without hooking the fish if yank like that. Circle hooks just need some pressure applied, thats why they are often used for passive fishing with higher drag to set itself. Change hooks and success rate goes up a lot.

That contraption looks dangerous! Circle hooks are great for "bait and wait" fishing. And they always catch the corner of the mouth for easy hook removal. I prefer a small brass khale hook for this type of fishing. Or shrimp on a jig head. I hook them Texas worm style through the tail. Looks to me like there needs to be some improvement with the design. First. The spikes included are not universally stable. The spikes provided don’t seem to set deep enough into the sand to withstand the mechanical hook setting power and pops out of the ground all the time. There should be longer spikes for sand and a flat platform included to set rocks on top of or a single solid pole to slip between rocks if you’re fishing riprap or rocky shorelines. There really needs to be some kind of extra counterweight at the butt end of the pole for stability as well. I also agree the pole should be detachable from the anchoring post. The concept seems practical, just don’t think the design was thoroughly thought through for real life applications.

Maybe if you put the fishing rod on the wet part of the beach. Where the sand is far firmer all the way up to the surface. The fishing rod lost much of its hooking properties due to dry loose sand.

I can see your rod going 4 a long swim if you get a big fish? Needs to be pushed into firmer sand. Dig a hole then place the rod.love the idea around self return rod. Nice invention, always good to try something new.( good fishing to u). ( Aussie John)....

looks like it would be better in a muddy riverbank with a heavy lure, could maybe let a plastic lure trail behind it too.

That sailcat you caught is really good eating. Fillet the meat and remove the darker meat, fry and enjoy. Better than freshwater cats

I would tap the spike in more and back a little so tip is higher not at a 90 to the water.

random idea, don't put it in soft sand. In theory it should totally do the job if the trigger system is decent enough. But I agree, why would you fish to watch some mechanism do half the work.

Good luck with that Rod man I just know I wouldn't buy it because you could you get a big fish on there specialist at telescopic rod nothing's going to break I wouldn't trust it maybe it might work for small striped bass for porgies but I wouldn't use it for no red fish black drum

They use these rods a lot here in China, where they fish deep fresh water from a platform. They line them up and have like 6 rods at a time and they catch nice size fish with them.
