  • If you look on any 'Greatest Horror Film' top 10 list, you most certainly will see The Shining. Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece is still one of the most unsettling films. And the mystery behind the madness makes it all the more interesting. Here's my review. #TheShining #StephenKing

This movie is an absolute classic and it's owed to Jack Nicholson's acting and Stanley Kubrick's intense directing, especially the stories you hear of what happened on set during production between him and Shelley Duvall. If there was ever a Horror film I'd go back in time and visit the production of, the Shining would have to rank at the top of the list.

I'm so glad you liked Shelley Duvall in this movie, Lee. People have given her so much crap. But she worked her butt off and Kubrick put her through total hell. Even Jack Nicholson said he's never seen an actor work so hard or endure so much as Shelley did. I like her a lot.

The reason this film triumphs over all other horror films is the fact that there are no objective perspectives from the characters. Each one is going mad, in different ways, and we have no idea if the events happening are real.

The Shining is my all time favorite horror movie and one of my top 5 movies of all time. My older sister took my to see it at the theatre when it came out in 1980, I was 10 years old and Jack Nicholson scared the bejesus out of me. Stanley Kubrick was a genius that knew exactly what would work on film about King's novel and what wouldn't work. The movie is a masterpiece, the novel not so much.

The switch on the bed - that was the camera firstly pointed at the mirror in the bedroom. You can see the edging of the mirror if my memory serves me correct. Then it cuts to directly the actors. They never changed sides on the bed. The possible meaning behind this shot was to show the duality of Nicholsons character. Hitchcock done this a lot in Psycho - showing the main characters reflections in mirrors and windows to show they have two sides.

  • @Layne618
    @Layne618 Před 4 lety +2

8:26 The reason why the camera angle changes in that scene is because, when it starts, what you're seeing is their reflection in a mirror across from them. When Wendy first walks in with the tray of food, it becomes obvious that the shot of Jack sleeping was actually reflected in a mirror. Just something I thought you'd be interested in.

Happy to see this landed the elusive Unicorn rating! It's easily one of the 10 greatest horror films ever made and one of the most beautifully shot, because Kubrick was a master of lighting and colors. Like you mentioned about The Thing, it captures the dread of isolation perfectly. Though the Overlook Hotel is massive, it is made impossibly claustrophobic by the snowstorm, which is unique.
It's only one of 2 horror movies even my dad loves, who typically shrugs at horror movies (the other being The Omen). I obviously fell far from that tree lol.

Funny that since I first saw The Shining as a teenager up until the Blu-ray release, I wasn't aware of the extended version until it was eventually announced for that release. I had seen still photos of some of those scenes but thought they were merely outtakes, something that was common in horror books I read in the 90's.
The longer version I think is much better with building atmosphere and since it's more faithful to King's book, a real win-win.

Glad you mentioned Shelley Duvall she don't get enough credit for her performance in this movie & her weary exhaustive look towards the end ain't acting I think it's how she genuinely felt.......knackered.
What are your thoughts on the ending Lee? is Jack a reincarnation of the man in the photo or his grandson perhaps or has the supernatural forces inside the hotel claimed his soul forever now trapped inside the photo & are you looking forward to Dr Sleep.

That's so damn cool that you uploaded this....just watched The Shining last night to finish off my Stephen King marathon for the year (watched Children of the Corn, original Carrie, Sleepwalkers, the remake of It, Pet Sematary original and remake, Creepshow 1 and 2, Christine, and The Shining). The Shining is my second favorite horror film right behind John Carpenter's Halloween. The Shining is a near perfect film for me....it's amazing how creepy the film actually is when there's really only one kill and two deaths in the entire runtime. Just a perfect example of the fact that just because a movie is extremely gorey and there's redrum after redrum (get it? Haha) that doesn't exactly make a movie creepy. It's the atmosphere you set it in and the story backing it up and the score and all the little bits of everything else that converge together to make a near damn perfect movie. Thanks so much for making this video, Lee, and did you know that there's a 4K of The Shining out now and a 4K Steelbook? I'm really needing to get it on 4K, but been saving up my money for a couple months to get myself a car. After I finally get it, though, I'm gonna have to see about me getting the 4K edition. If you're still reading this, have a fantastic one, Lee!

I have to add that while watching this, I just wanted to add that Jack's treatment of being a prick to Wendy actually started, I think, right away on the drive up to the Hotel. I truly believe there was always something evil lying dormant in Jack's subconscious that was only made awake by being in the Overlook Hotel. I don't think the Overlook ever actually truly gave him that mean streak towards his wife. Not to mention when Wendy openly talks about what happened between Jack and Danny back when Jack was drinking and "accidentally" hurt his own son. Maybe that's what the power of the Hotel was....it only made things come to light that was already lying dormant in a person's subconscious. Also, what you said about the switching sides on the bed thing....just another reason why Kubrick's one of my top 7 favorite directors of all time. He always thought of just about every possible detail in each one of his movies.

I'm actually hyped Netflix and Warner Bros decided to make this film a theatrical release because it is that kind of story that needs that treatment and except for one film he's done that I thought was just okay, the guy has a phenomenal resume of films and productions. I truly think it’s a masterpiece that borders on Lovecraftian Terror... in many ways it’s what Kubrick chooses _not_ to show or elaborate upon that makes it truly uncanny and unsettling. Long time no talk brother. I'll be putting up my own review of this soon so I'll keep this brief, but just wanted to put across my theory on kings complaint about jack being off balance from the beginning in the film. I am neither a filmmaker nor mindreader, but I think that was a calculated move on kubricks part to hold the viewer.
Anyone who read the book or watched trailers knew going in that jack was eventually going to go nuts. That was telegraphed at the outset. I think kubrick knew he wanted his film to be a chilling and atmospheric slow burn but he had to do something to ratchet up the tension. It's the move I would have made, at least. In a 2 and a half hour film, if the first hour played out like an episode of leave it to beaver with the family being ocassonally alarmed by something strange in the hotel, I think audiences would have been bored out of their minds. And not for nothing, but kings book sucks in my opinion. I'm a fan of his work, but I think that is one of his worst. I think he should be grateful for the retooling that kubricks did. Otherwise the theatrical release would have been as much of a dull clown-show as the miniseries that stayed true to the book.

Not my favorite Kubrick film (favorite’s probably Barry Lyndon), but I just love The Shining. As you already said - everything is just so great about it: the plot, the cinematography, the score, the acting, and on top of all that - the directing. Thanks for the review!

Nice review, Lee! I absolutely love this film - definitely one of my all-time favorites. It's also the movie that first got me into film criticism. The cinematography, Jack Nicholson's performance, the source material - all fantastic! I know I'm in the minority here, but I can't stand Wendy at all though haha.

Thanks Lee for reviewing this! I love The Shining and easily in my Top 5 Horror. Loved Nicholson's portrayal and descent into madness! Not a big fan of the made for tv movie actually based more off of King's book but of course there are parts that match up. Prefer Kubrick's version way more.

Right/left side of the bed - the first shot was into a mirror. Notice the mirrored lettering on Jack's shirt.

Jack thinks of his wife more like a child, that’s why she’s dressed in the same clothes as the Goofy statue in Danny’s room and same colors as Danny thru the movie like the Twins

The Shining(1980) is essentially groundbreaking for it’s use of Steadicam in addition to being groundbreaking for it’s use of Easter eggs which I heard from a lot of anecdotes

The flip scene i think is just the reflection in the mirror. Also i feel like a lot of directors just put random little Easter eggs in their movies for no reason except to just see what kind of off the wall theories people will come up with 😂😂

You're correct...the first half of the scene is looking into the wall mirror. You can see the frame of the mirror, and you can clearly see that the text on Jack's shirt is backwards.

@@DrumdumsMovieReviews A lot of Kubrick's movies had this unique cinematography. The way he lays out the rooms is very streamlined, for lack of a better word. Look at Scatman's room when he is laying on the bed -- he has 2 pictures above his head, aligned perfectly with the bed, and the room in which Danny wasn't supposed to go, has that same feel to it. Same in "2001", especially in the final scene. "A Clockwork Orange" also has this same type of interior design. I'm not sure if Kubrick had any input regarding the set design, or if he simply used the same set designer.

  • @entertainmentwizard2703

Great review Lee I am honestly not sure if I ever saw the movie all the way through but I agree it gets intense! I think it's a solid film but I agree with Steven King that Jack Nicholson while he played an excellent crazy person but trying to play a normal guy was mixed at best! The film get's insanely intense and I have to give it major praise for that and I do really like it! I think it's among the best Steven King films but could be a little stronger! I am really curious about Doctor Sleep and I hope it's as good as The Shining or at least close to it!

Revisit Black Christmas (1974) sometimes and/or review A Christmas Story (1983) which is interesting that Bob Clark did both films which are two very different Christmas movies.
