  • Adam Wingard's You're Next is easily one of the best slashers of the last decade. Combining a isolated setting, fun twist, and a final girl to top them all, it's insane that the movie was shelved for almost 2 years before release. It's safe to say, Wingard was lookin' for the magic. Here's my review. #YoureNext

Erin is like, the right way to do everything Hollywood keeps trying to force with all the female empowerment. Like, this character is exactly the subtle way to create a true female badass. ❤️🖤

You said it better than I did. Unfortunately if this movie came out today it would be ruined for me before I even saw it by the GIRL POWER obsessed media. It really pisses me off, since I always loved well written strong females like Ripley and Sarah Conner, the gals from The Descent, Sheriff Brody's wife in Jaws 4 (kidding) but now I get called misogynist because I don't like Terminator Dark Fate or Ghostbusters. smh.

I never understand that "men didn't see it" argument, as if they think the movie-going public is entirely male. It's also absurd to imply women don't like action films or comic book films, as Banks did. If those films make their millions off of just men, why couldn't her film make millions off just women? It's almost like quality matters or something.

When I first saw this at theaters I really didn't like the reason everything was happening I felt it was to simple, flash forward a year I get another chance to check it out and that's when I realized that the reason although simple is still something that actually happens in the real world. It was after my second viewing that I fell in love with this movie and I now include it in my favorite "Women who don't take no crap" collection.

What I love about what they did with Erin was that they did not go out of their way to justify why she was a bad-ass. They just had her say that she grew up in a concentration camp(?) and that was that. No emotional flashbacks whatsoever, they just let her be bad-ass.

About a year or so ago, my cousin showed me this movie and before we started watching it he asked me: "Who's your favorite final girl?" I said "Either Nancy Thompson or Sidney Prescott." After watching this movie, I found me my new favorite final girl! I'm glad to finally have this review see the light of day. It's a really underrated film and a film that doesn't get talked about as much as it deserves to.

I don't know what it is about A.J. Bowen, but I end up liking even his most unlikeable characters. Another thing, Erin really is one of the best final girls (if not the best), I've seen in a horror movie. Her smartest choice by far in the movie was killing her fiancé, there was no way he was letting her live after witnessing all that.

One of the best home invasion horrors of out time. Me, my gf and my friend all dressed up as the three villains two Halloweens ago. If you're wondering where I got the masks from, I got them from 'Maniac masks' on 'etsy' . They are screen accurate as they're made from the same animal masks used in the film and touched up with a brilliant and accurate paint job.

Easily one of my favorite movies of all time. Even my dad who doesn't like horror movies loves this one. We watched it last week and we were literally laughing the entire way through. I don't know which is funnier, the killer stepping on the nails or the blender to the head, but it's all just terrifically, great fun. It's hard to find those slasher movies that are simultaneously a true dark comedy. There are also plenty of good quality jump scares in You're Next. I know this movie took over 2 years to make it to theaters. I feel blessed that we got to see this movie finally released and I'll never forget how much fun I had watching it all by myself in the Fort Benning movie theater. Great review!!

You're Next (2011) is one of the most greatest slasher movies of all time. It was something new, fresh, unique, inventive, stylish, cool, edgy, hip, and updated. They really took the "home invasion" concept and theme to a whole another level as it was just absolutely and positivity constructed perfectly. It was such a nail-biting and intense thrill ride as it kept me on the edge of my seat. 😰😱 Sharni Vinson did a phenomenal and spectacular job portraying Erin as she put tons of emotion and depth into her role as she is definitely and completely a great "Final Girl" in the horror genre as she will be a excellent horror icon. It was decent and to this day I still watch it. You're Next (2011) is a true blue modern gem in horror cinema. Adam Wingard directed a classic that will be in our hearts forever. It never gets old. 😍😎💯👍

My only real complaint would be that if they'd just set it in the 90s, they wouldn't have had to do that hand-wavey "cell phone jammer" bit. As Mike Flanagan once said, "I hate cell phones; they ruin storytelling."

So, this is the first I've heard of You're Next, and may change after I see the movie, but triggered the wrestling fan side of my brain. How so? First, the title, sounds like the answer to Goldberg's catchphrase of Who's Next. Then, the sheep mask, very much like Erick Rowan wore, and Braun Stroman with Braun's being black when both was in The Wyatt Family. Then Clothesline, that one speaks for itself. Then you mentioned TNA, what Impact Wrestling use to be called. Yeah, so much that my wrestling mind already connected with this movie. 😉😂🤣 But seriously, does sound interesting, and I'll totally check my streaming services for it. Thank you, Lee.

I mean the name alone hello and I 💯 agree. When we saw this it did not disappoint! And the final girl kicks ass! Curious though, did she survive?

I had to look up the opening song after watching this video.
It took me a long time to see this movie after it came out and I knew nothing about it but I finally watched it a couple years ago. I was just amazed how cool of a final girl Erin in You're next was with full Rambo style traps. I was so surprised with her and it really cool to have a final girl with my name being a horror fan.

"You're Next," to me, is trying to evoke a 70s exploitation movie, while planting its feet firmly in 21st century horror, and I think it succeeds marvelously in mixing these two separate eras to create a quality of timelessness.
Start with the locations like the neighbor's house which is a mid-century modern adorned with those iconic 70s vertical wood slat panels. The main house in contrast, is much a more traditional Tudor mansion, seems like a vintage country estate the family had refurbished. Several of it's rooms are decorated with elaborate wallpaper and it still has that grid-patterned board and batten walnut wood paneling in the dining room and front hall where so much of the action takes place. Neither dwelling is specifically emblematic of the 70s, in fact by that time they were rapidly-growing-dated styles representative of their social groups from that era (the swinging mid-mod representing the bachelor and the stately country mansion representing the wealthy parents), but I feel like I saw those 'types' of houses (and those mentioned decors) in a lot of media from the late 60 and throughout the 70s. Neither seems jarring in the present as those vintage architectures and styles were coming back into fashion by the 2010s.
Speaking of fashion, remember how Drake's wife is wearing an outfit with a large frilly collar? It was bugging me why they went with such a dated (almost frumpy/secretarial) clothing choice, but now I think it was deliberate. Same with the sister's flowy top or Drake's turtleneck, all were popular clothing styles of that time that seem just slightly out of place now. Add to it all the brown and orange hues (the dad's sweater vest, the director character's scarf, Crispin's blazer, Erin's sweater) which narratively could be chalked up to film taking place in Autumn, but thematically still evoke the 70s, and I think there's a definite intentional allusion from the costume department.
Lastly, there's the obvious comparative media of the 1970s with "The Last House on the Left," "Straw Dogs," "Black Christmas," even "A Clockwork Orange" and other exploitation films that focus on a home invasion aspect (there sure were a lot of them in the 70s, weren't there?). Thankfully "You're Next" turns the tropes of these ancestral films on their head with Erin's competency, calm, and general badassery. Taken altogether, I'd say there's more than a chance that the director or someone on the creative team had the 70s in mind when making the film.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on whether you think this might be a deliberate evocation or not.

Give it till 2030 I'm sure that distinction will be seen, it usually takes a couple decades for movies to stand for its decade before that there just great or good movies It hasn't even been ten years since you're next came out, I'd say the 0o's will be known for the found footage horror, like 80's was known for it's slashers though it signature slasher came out the last year of the 70's like the signature found footage movie did

If you like “your next” check out “ready or not”. Similar vibe but still different. I wasn’t expecting much from it but was pleasantly surprised and entertained by the film. Samara weaving was great in it but Great performances all around, worth a watch for sure.

Lila T So do I. Hell, I’ve enjoyed pretty much everything I’ve seen from Adam Wingard, including the American remake of Death Note, a movie that pissed off anime fanboys so badly (death threats were involved) that Adam had to quit Twitter. Shit like that makes me understand why Jason from Sinister Cinema Reviews has such a strong hatred of anime fans.
