    King always sympathised with Jack Torrance because he was writing about himself, hence his anger at Kubrick. But for me, seeing this at a young age, with a father who liked the bottle, the idea that your own father could fly into a murderous rage and hurt, even kill you, given the right circumstances cut me to the bone. It was horrifying and real. The film takes Danny's side more. That's the side I connected with.

      @system-error Před 4 lety +1

      I think about this film way too much, but my latest developing theory is that Kubrick's Jack is actually meant to be King. As in, King first made Jack in his own image in the novel, based on his own alcoholism struggles, and made Jack redemptive, sympathetic and kind of a tragic hero. But Kubrick reinterpreted it and made Jack into a rotten guy with evil lurking inside him from the get-go. This is why King was so upset. Kubrick is commenting on King with his changes to Jack. It bothered King so much that he had to go and make the more faithful 90s miniseries, with his own original version of Jack.

    • @Corbomite-ei1ty
      @Corbomite-ei1ty Před 4 lety +4

      Kubrick simply took the idea and changed it. The same thing happened with Blade Runner. The book (Do Androids Dream if Electric Sheep?) was completely different. Also The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker and a few other Fleming Bond novels were completely re-imagined.

      Have not seen The Shining in years so I could be wrong here, but doesn't the film pretty much imply that Jack has had some anger management problems before they go to the hotel? And his wife (can't remember the character name) certainly looks weak and scared before the axe starts swinging. The mysterious line "you've always been the caretaker" could imply that Jack always had it in him to kill his family.

      They were told this was A MASTERPIECE OF MODERN HORROR. What they saw was Jack Nicholson being too charismatic to be terrifying and Shelley Duvall too ridiculous being terrified. Once that expectation died down, people were able to rediscover it on its merits. This is why I don’t trust anyone’s opinions on a film when it first comes out. Too many factors interfere with a fair judgment. This movie is a prime example of that.

      Check out the 1st Golden Rasberry Awards. It's a complete joke.
      Some of the nominees for worst director were: Stanley Kubrick (for Shining obviously), Gordon Willis for Windows, William Friedkin for Cruising and Brian de Palma for Dressed to Kill. The worst picture nominees included: Xanadu, Cruising and Friday the 13th. Michael Caine was also a nominee for the worst actor that year, while Shelley Duvall was a nominee for worst actress for her role in The Shining.
      So yes, I think they were fucking insane.

      VHS and the original dvd is fine. They actually are in 4:3 ratio, which was apparently how Kubrick intended you to see it. There are some scenes where candles or ceiling lights were cropped out of the image to turn it into a widescreen (1:85:1) image. Some fans claim that 40% of the image is cropped out of widescreen versions.

    Oliver, love your content. I had the privilege to view the Shining in 35mm several years ago. My buddy was raving about how there was a single shot that had never been color corrected properly, but I can’t remember which. The audio was sourced from the original optical track, which was very degraded. The distortion from the audio track only added to the terror, as any hard clipping produced an ear shattering screech. This was at the Parkway cinema in Baltimore, MD.

    • @system-error
      @system-error Před 4 lety

      Even Eraserhead feels almost like a Charlie Chaplin film compared to The Shining. However it predates The Shining and was also Lynch's first feature. But I would say that Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive are two of the best Shining-like films. The first act of Lost Highway in particular, is right up there with The Shining, very similar psych-horror awesomeness.

    • @jonathanmelia
      @jonathanmelia Před 4 lety +1

      Fun fact: while Kubrick was filming The Shining, he invited some of the crew over to dinner, then said, “Let me show you one of my favourite films.” And he showed them Eraserhead! They told Lynch soon after when he was filming The Elephant Man, and he was over the moon when he heard...

    • @system-error
      @system-error Před 4 lety

      @@jonathanmelia very cool story, I also love how Empire Strikes Back and The Shining were being shot at the same studio, and Lucas and Kubrick would meet up. I especially find it fascinating because of the parallels between ESB and The Shining - talking to ghosts, objects moving by magic, slow motion vision sequences... and the Shine is kind of similar to the Force.
      I also think Lynch should have directed ROTJ! Lucas asked him but he turned it down. Lynch was a pretty big deal at that time, a hot young director. But then he made Dune instead which was a traumatic failure that he still doesn't want to talk about. That's actually why Eraserhead has sci-fi elements but post-Dune he totally expunged sci-fi from his style. Dune burnt him off it.

    After seeing this film on vhs there is no doubt in my mind it was composed for 4:3. They used that aspect ratio on vhs and the later dvd for a reason. (Cuz Kubrick said so.) Warner Brothers is crazy, they put the original audio on Superman 4k for the first time, but remix everything else, even replacing sound effects on Batman. I'm almost afraid buying 4k discs because of the TINKERING. The majority of music cues that we all think are iconic come from existing compositions by classical composers...Bartok, Ligeti, Penderecki. Much like Kubrick did with 2001. Nothing against Wendy Carlos, but it's not right that she gets credit in so many people's minds for the work of other composers.

    When I first saw this movie I had actually watched a broadcast of the extended edit, something I only found out about to my dismay when I grabbed the UK DVD release. Fortunately that was resolved for me with the remastered US release. You could argue that it's simply because I was used to seeing the full version that I didn't much care for the shorter version but to be honest I think the longer cut, by weaving a bit more of the relatively mundane into the story, creates a better view into the plight of the cast and Jack's descent into madness.

    My ONLY complaint about The Shining is the ludicrously extended scenes of Halloran trying to get to the hotel. From what I've read, this was all meant as a dark joke by Kubrick: to spend so much time getting Halloran to the hotel, and then to immediately kill him when he gets there. I DO find it amusing, but not amusing enough to warrant the extra time.

So he adapted a novel by the then most talked about blockbuster horror novelist.

    I like Stephan King, and he can hate this movie all he wants, but no matter how much he hates it, this movie has gain a ALOT of fans from it! Hell, most people like me, were introduce to Stephan Kings work after this film! I found this movie to be SO GOOD, I wanted to see more Stephan King adaptations! RIP Stanley Kubrick! You made a lot of great films! And The Shining is one of your best!

    You keep referencing Wendy Carlos' score - she only really composed two pieces of music for the film, the opening, and the piece that accompanies the journey to the Overlook. The rest is found classical music. And so really it's these classical pieces that give it its menace.

    • @domcoke
      @domcoke Před 4 lety

      @ My point was: that it's quite wrong to reference "Wendy Carlos' score" as if it runs throughout the film, and is a prominent feature - it isn't. The massive majority of the music in the film is found classical.

    That SUCKS that they didn't include the original mono track. Kubrick would be pissed too. Sometimes mono and 2-track stereo just sounds better. The mono audio on the Criterion release of Night of the Living Dead sounds FAR better than the THX surround sound mix on the previous collector's release.

    King didn't really get that Kubrick basically hollowed out his story, mirrored it and filled it with as many hidden messages as possible. Otherwise Kubrick wouldn't have been interested in a haunted hotel story.

    The new version seems a bit too blurred due to the 35mm blow up. It seems it could have had more of the original photographic material grain in it. I'm not sure if they filtered out a bit and than compensate that with a slight bit of sharpness filter because you definitely can make out some very little edge enhancement on the blue ray version, what's a total no go. I screened via a full hd projector and I was a bit disappointed. It could be more film-like analogish looking for me. But I'm very pleased with the new color grading. They done a great job here and it fits the tone of the film perfectly. And it fits Kubricks love for a naturalistic look more than older transfers. All in all a good release but not 100% convincing.

      That's for sure for collectors reasons anyway. But I don't like the full frame ratio there too much. You clearly see that the photographic frame was composed for matted theatrical screenings. So I'm relatively content with the new version. It's a good compromise.

    The Shining is so good as a movie, I never read the book. I've read around one-third of Stephen King's books but never bothered with this one. It's a bit of an odd thing but the movie was/is so amazing I just don't see the point reading something that I'd see as a divergence.

    • @thewandering525
      @thewandering525 Před 4 lety

      G. S. Nope. If you don't know, this and Eyes Wide Shut were shot with the gates open. There's more in the frame in the 4:3 versions. More than that, I just like the compositions better. The widescreen versions have never worked for me. *shrugs*

    • @thewandering525
      @thewandering525 Před 4 lety

      G. S. I don't know about the Shining, but Eyes Wide Shut never had pan and scan, and the 90s Kubrick Collection release of the Shining didn't either. Kubrick shot with the gates open to avoid pan and scan butchering on home release. And I don't care what Kubrick intended or preferred in this case, as the academy ratio compositions look much better imo. I know most don't care or prefer widescreen by default, but I would like to have the option of seeing the film as I originally saw it, in better quality.

    I have a question (possibly stupid). Is HRD accurate to film, meaning is it what the camera originally captured and HDR allows it to be viewed as it was intended, or is it like an enhancement? Like how some tvs artificially motion smooth?

    That Minotaur theory was not batshit crazy, it explained how the maze got in the story, and what's with that buffalo head on the wall behind Jack's head when he is going batshit crazy. And the woman in the film Room 237 points out, in the interview scene the boss explained why the hotel wasn't open for skiing, so there is no reason for a skiing poster to be on the wall.

    No mono track??? Such an easy thing for them to have included. Who made that decision? 4k has enough room to put the original print and mono track. Maybe they plan to release a deluxe edition or something?
