This video takes a look at the Creality Ferret Pro Scanner and considers how this technology might serve the scale model builder. The video demonstrates capturing a scan, processing and printing it. The video concludes with a brief review of the pros and cons based on my experience and how it relates to scale model building.

That is a really cool thing!! I'm amazed with the technology. Great possibilities. Thank you for the review Oggie!

Very cool Oggie. Definitely with practice and learning the programs it will be a game changer for model builders as more and more upgrades come out just like 3d printers.

Totally agree Kenny. Would be easier to be able to scan things vs having to design on Blender from scratch.

Very cool technology for sure. No doubt it will only become better at scanning small stuff

Now imagine using that to scan action figures, sculpt away the part seams and fine-adjust the pose after an auto-rigging plugin has made it poseable. Would be a useful pipeline to put printed characters in our models.
Or to scan segments to model add-ons, be it widebody fenders or a different hood for cars or stuff like kitbash parts for ships (e.g., scan a Trek ship saucer's specific shape and then model a mod section, like those integrated deflector dishes or a different impulse drive).

Nice! Scanning posed Action figures posed…what a great idea. The models parts, again, depends on the size at this poiny but yes ultimately that would be a really good use of this tool. Thanks for these comments.

      @@InterstellarModelerThanks as well!
While action figures aren't modeled for that kind of use, we can probably get away with slight adjustments with free rigging tools like AccuRIG. The gaps between the different parts of the figure will require some sculpting to eliminate (or just fill them with putty before scanning, if you don't need to change the posture anymore), but that's the price of not needing to model the entire character from scratch.
These scanners have their limitations, but spraying a Star Trek ship saucer with matte primer and then extrapolating the correct cross-section or compound curve would be right in their wheelhouse. From there, it's then easy to model new modified sections, like different impulse drive section or a new superstructure, to the point that only minimal gap filling will be needed. Same with the body shape of car models to model body kit pieces. Stuff like greebles is bound to be beyond their capabilities nowadays (even layer-based systems struggle with that), but this could save a ton of time in more generic situations.
Sadly, there's a lot of useless junk being sold in this segment at inflated prices, so tracking down something for one's specific needs usually takes time.

@InterstellarModeler You actually have several use cases right there on your channel.
A few years ago, you built an Aliens Narcissus, with such a scanner you could extrapolate the general shape correctly, if you ever decided to build the docking section it detaches from during its launch, making a back plate for its presentation that would fit the model like a glove.
Same with extrapolating the outline to make a cutting template for packing foam, so you can make a transport case that fits down to the millimeter.
You already had a great example in your video with downsizing a model. Those of us who build custom/kitbash ships could make miniature replicas of a previous project to display a smaller version, docked to a starbase we build as a later project.

    Hey Oggie
Great tool. When you create your bust, perhaps have it hinged to hide a switch for the Batcave🦇😉
    Take care😊

Not this week thank you. However, It would be good to be able to take an object along to a scanning facility and come home with a clean file.....

Once again we move farther away from, the old carve a bit of bass wood into a scale model😄. Good review, I'm going to catch up to you furtutistic tool useing guys real soon-----soon as I figure out how to spell CA glue.

Caution with the copyright! No one will come to you for scanning a part and making a clear version. Or if you have a valuable oop model and make a private copy of it. But do not upload or share this with others. They will get to you one way or the other.

And it’s not the right thing to do either. This should be for personal use. Appreciate the comment, thanks
