Crazy when you think about the great Spurs and their signature shots. Tim Duncan had the bank shot, Tony had the tear drop, Manu had the euro step, and Iceman had the finger roll.
He’s still an icon here in San Antonio and still lives around here
Ice probably had the greatest "touch" of any shooter ever. He could shoot from any angle inside or out. No one used the backboard like George. Just an incredible one on one player.
He was off the glass
I'd say the greatest scorer I've Ever Seen.
he wasn't a total player, however if you just want a shooting guard for offense Jordan and Gervin are one and two and I'm not sure who is #1
He's criminally underrated, and I have to think MJ/Kobe/etc. watched him for style points when they were coming up.
if I had to take Kobe or Ice at the shooting guard I would take Ice and LOVE Kobe,I'm old enough to have seen his dad play with the sixers, Ice was unstoppable and highly efficient,He could score 30 while sleeping and shoot 50%
Everyone talks about George Gervin's "finger-roll" and his outside shooting, but he was also an incredible dunker. I wish there were more highlights saved of his dunks in traffic -- they were awesome! Thanks, Sean, for a great video tribute to the Iceman.
He also was an incredible cocaine user as well. 😏
Dusty = George Gervin Ice = crystal meth
@@nomad2579 your point?
@@nomad2579 that's why he the Iceman 😂
Karens in the House
I seen him play twice and on TV. The ICE was just incredible. He has to be that Good when I ALWAYS brought him into conversations that involved the Dr, Magic, Bird. It's ashame that he's NOT brought up in MORE conversations for this New Generation to KNOW about...
Also do one on Moses Malone. He's been largely forgotten, but he was one of the best players of the 70's and early 80's
Defense level 1000
Amazing versatility! Saw him put up 43 against the Lakers....never took the same shot twice.
Excellent point. He had so much variety. As much as anyone who's ever shot a basketball. He was pretty good with his left hand too.
Probably the best touch ever.
George Gervin.... I was 8 years of age when I saw you finger roll and make unique baskets to go in... you used the whole floor and the whole glass not just the square...the whole glass balls would squeel when it touched the anywhere of the glass....you will always be my best ever in my life....thank you my man I'll cherish those badass moments when you put the opponents on "Ice"...at the hemisphere arena... again thank you for the greatest memories for me....
Not to mention what a killer nickname!
With a nod to the legendary pool cue artist Minnesota Fats, can we call George , San Antonio Slim?
He used the glass like a pool hustler used the cushions on a table.
No two shots alike.
The best! And he’s built like a pool cue too 😉
Saw the Spurs play in 1977 going through my Air Force time at Lackland in San Antonio. Gervin, Larry Kenon, James Silas, Mark Oberding, and Billy (the whopper) Paltz. Such a fun team and loaded with talent. Larry Kenon was real.
One of my favorite players. Wasn't alive when he was playing but i saw tapes of him when I was younger and seeing that finger roll. I wanted to do that more than I wanted to be able to dunk.
Another great scorer fromt that era was Bob McAdoo. Unfortunately the 70s was a down period for the Nba in popularity, so many of those guys don't get their due.
You have the classiest reminders of the greats from the past. When I was in High School in Richmond, VA, we followed the Virginia Squires, and that was my first introduction to the Ice Man; most people only remember him from his time with the Spurs, but he was already great in the 1970s with the ABA. Thank you for preserving and sharing these memories of such terrific athletes.
Yes,sir. Like you I was in high school (Petersburg) when the Ice Man and Dr. J were with the Squires. I was such a fan of his play, that I became a Spurs fan because of him. Never thought I would ever meet or get to know him, but I now live in San Antonio and Ice is one of my golfing buddies! I can tell you, he’s as fine a human being as he was a basketball player.
I don't remember him as a kid, despite the fact that I started following and playing basketball in the mid 80s back in Greece, but I've seen plenty of his highlights! And he's a 4 time scoring champ! Only Allen Iverson and KD have done that and only Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan have won more scoring titles! So, much love and respect to the Iceman!
Gervin is like a combo of Kyrie and KD
I loved the Iceman cold and smooth as ICE !!
The Iceman was a DEADLY offensive player. Could give it to you in a huge variety of ways. Didn't play a lick of defense though.
The young Ice man played decent defense, he was not a defensive stopper. But check the stats books, he led guards in block shot category a couple years.
As he got older, he did not have the same foot speed but he could score on anybody in his sleep!
Bro keep doing you thing. Your keeping the history of this great game going and giving ppl who didn’t get a chance to watch it to learn about the greats and even the not so greats of the 80’s and 90’s. Love the content.
You post it. I click and watch it. Added bonus you have a nice voice for this type of work.
They forgot to mention "The Iceman" also lead the league in scoring four times, three years in a row! He's still one of my all time favorite basketball players, he was the most exciting player to watch in his day, and nobody could stop him! He once scored 63 points in 3 quarters!💯👊😎
Old school ballers had the coolest nicknames
Iceman was special. A big time scorer who was smooth with his game. He had that feathery touch finger roll! Dude was nice. Would average 35 a game easy in today's NBA!
Saw Ice play live many times in San Antonio. He was definitely that good! Love you, Ice!
Me too. Yes, he's unusual player.
Ice was unlike other scorers .
He made his shots with ease and less effort than most scorers.
He was fun to watch.
Iceman was dope. Loved his game.
George can drop 48 pts and you think he dropped 27 pts.
Coach George Karl was a teammate of George ICEMAN Gervin for 5 years as a 6'2" PG. Karl played 3 years with him in the ABA and 2 years in the NBA. 1978 was George Karl's last year as a player but was a Head Coach by 1980 for the Nuggets.
Thank you for this 👍
George Gervin doesn't get enough coverage 🔥
So good to see Iceman getting his flowers
George Gervin is vastly underrated. Growing up, I am a huge Seattle Supersonic fan with Gus Williams, Dennis Johnson, Jack Sikma, Lonnie Shelton, Downtown Freddie Brown & gang, and the Iceman used to absolutely put in work against us. Like all the the players said in the video, he was unguardable. I played high school, college basketball myself to the highest level; and I used to replicate everyone's game to a degree, GG's game was so "different" I wouldn't even try. He's that unique/special of a player.
Being from Texas Gervin was finger rolling monster and would freeze you and on a cross move
Living in San Antonio....I saw Ice play in the ABA; he really put on a show
One of my favorite players growing up. Use to listen to Spurs games on the radio with Terry Stembridge before the merger. Couldn't get ABA games on TV. Wasn't Ice and Dr. J on the Virginia Squires briefly.
Nothing around today like a San Antonio Spurs versus Denver Nuggets run and gun shoot out back then where both teams would normally score over 150 points each …. In regulation time.
Yes they were on the squires.
My favorite story is the race for the scoring title in 1978. Dave Thompson had just scored 73 points in a game (54 in one half) and George Gervin needed something like 56 points to overtake him…he scored 63 in three quarters and that was that. He was like MJ or Kobe, in that sense, in those days.
Another underrated great player #TheIceman
Thanks for helping expand my knowledge of the game man, the old cats don't get enough credit
Cold As Ice
My uncle had that Nike poster with the Iceman on an iced throne
Could you do a George McGinnis video heard stuff about him but not that many videos out about him.
Love your videos Sean!!!
I am surprised you only have 233k subs. Should be over a million!
Great video!!!
U all wanna know why this is a great channel?
Because it stays highlighting the greats!
I had the nickname "Ice Man" as a kid, my friends older brother hung on it me. I didn't know who George Gervin was until the late 80's! Lol
Gervin excells above all nba players of the 1980’s, and following!
He got arms like me, twigs, but long
How good was he ? Damn Good! Theres only one ICE MAN
Y'all got to respect the ICEMAN!!!!
@SeanDavid: Thank you for this video praising one of the most talented and graceful players the game has ever - or will ever - know. I was a teen in Dallas in the Eighties, and the Mavericks were a fairly new franchise. George Gervin & Co. would come to town from San Antonio. The Mavs had some good players. We certainly were not the Celtics or the Lakers, but the Mavs were decent. Gervin could not be guarded. No matter what you did, he was going to score 28 or more points, and his partner in crime - Artis Gilmore - was going to get 5000 rebounds per game. There was nothing flashy that the Spurs did, but they usually won.
That finger roll was unstoppable. And, Isaiah Thomas is correct: George used every portion of that backboard, and nobody else has done it - before or since!!!! He was nothing short of amazing. You would see him come down the court. YOu know what he is going to do. And....he does it, no matter what you do to him. He just does it, again, and again, and again.
Why I wore 44...end of discussion 🥶
George Gervin > Kevin Durant. George is a way better scorer. He'd be the scoring champ if he played in the current league.
44 all day
EVERY KID DON'T GET TO MEET THIER HERO BUT I FOLLOWED ICE SINCE ICE WAS PLAYING FOR THE VIRGINIA SQUIRES JANUARY 1973 AND I MET ICE AND I BECAME HIS SHOTGUN MAN AND I WAS AT THE HALL OF FAME WHEN ICE WAS INDUCTED MAY 1996 AND I LOOK LIKE JAMES JIMMY SI CAPTAIN LATE SILAS I DID ALL OF THIS FROM NEW YORK CITY DAMN WHAT A LIFE I'VE LIVED
Thumbs up before it starts
I remember getting him as a cheat code on NBA Live 95. He was raw. I used Pistol Pete the most though. Good times.....
Point out his "Left Hand" finger roll please 👏
Watched the Iceman as kid always smoke 💨 the Sixers
Can you please do a video on Tim Hardaway?
I don't remember it it may come back to me
Why y'all so scared of saying "San Antonio Spurs"❤ shoot we're here with Wembanyama. Been here since George"The Iceman" Gervin! David Robinson, Tim Duncan. We might be in all the haters mouths again. Love your channel✌️🤠💖
It pays to have really big hands
Here's a suggestion.. Stacey Augmom
Gilbert Arenas become the new clown 🤡 for Klutch sports propaganda company, the iceman is one of those players way better than a lot of players today period
I can't believe he was a great basketball player with how bad his opinion is.
did anyone ever BEAT him in 2 on 2 bball
1 Thing Ice Man can Do …. 🏀
