  • I CRASHED into the monitor!!! Montana Farming 2022
In today's video, I made a big mistake and crashed my truck mirror into the grain elevator monitor system! Yikes, Dad had to help me get out of that situation. I also am trying to learn to center the truck over the grain pit in the elevator and I am having a bit of trouble with that!!!! I also forgot to pick up the receipt for our grain and it blew away into a field. Today was challenging. It's a learning process and Dad is pretty patient and says everyone makes mistakes! I will try to improve next time!! I hope you like my video! Thank you for watching!!!

    My Story…
Hello. My name is Kate Stephens, and I am a 17-year-old 4th generation Montana farmer. My family has been farming wheat in north-central Montana since my great grandfather immigrated from Denmark in 1912 and homesteaded our land. My family has been teaching me about farming since I was two years old. I run one of the combines on the farm at harvest. I believe that it is important for everyone to know where their food comes from and the families who produce it. I love our farm, and I hope that my Farm to Fashion and Farm to Table products can help educate people about where their food comes from in a fun way. That is how Kate's Ag - Farm to Fashion became a reality. I hope you love my products as much as I do because this is an extension of our farm and the grains we have been growing to feed other families for over one hundred years.

You are in the process of building an amazing skill set. I was reminded of my daughter at 17 many years ago interviewing for admission to the college of her dreams. They asked her "what are three things that make you unique compared to our other applicants." Her answer was " I can drive a tractor, back a horse trailer, and use a chain saw." She got in, early selection.

Kate, when my Dad took me out he had me looking out my mirrors and see where I thought my driver's side tires were and where they actually are. Also he had me try and line up the hood ornament to the white line and look at my passenger side tires in the mirror. Great video Kate, and 100mph wind must be crazy!!!! The Dad and Kate routine is very charming. Dad giving instructions without getting mad, Kate listening and trying to follow. Then she breaks into her narrator voice when speaking to camera, just charming. She is a damn good narrator by the way. And Dad and Kate are clearly fond of each other and respectful. One day Kate will run the farm.

Set some barrels or highway cones up in the grain bin lot and start making big circles with the trunk where you have to drive through the barrels. As you improve lining up the truck to the opening of the barrels, start moving them closer together till there is little more than the truck is wide. This will simulate what you are dealing with at the elevator, and you can do it as many times as you need to get good at it. No mirrors will be hurt in doing this practice. Love your videos and I am rooting for your success.

Kate the best way to centre your truck is to use the centre of your hood (where the handgrab is) as a guide for where your offside wheel is. Try it on the highway and get as close to the fogline (edgeline) as possible (looking in mirror to see where you're at, then look at the centre of your hood, it will look like the edgeline is going straight under the centre of your truck hood. It varies for exactly how you sit in the seat etc but it's a good guide and will get you through tight spots.

Much respect! I was born a city boy but at 18 I went to visit my cousins on their 32K acre cattle ranch one summer and ended up staying and living with them for 2 years. I loved it. I did just about everything they did and learned a lot enough that it let them go on vacations and keep their marriage going while I took care of the farm. I ran combine, baled hay, ran the hay stack retriever, pulled calves, did round up, tagged and branded. Much like you I was also yelled at a few times for messing up but it was good for me in the end. I'm now a IT professional living in town but more rural and someday hope to start my own hobby farm.

@Kate's Ag - Farm to Fashion You are very welcome! I am happy to see new generations getting into agriculture and animal husbandry. That was one thing me and my cousins talked about a lot. Their extended family had no real interest in the ranch and land other than to sell it off. I will always have the utmost respect for anyone do the work you do. And it's amazing that you share it with us even the hard parts. That shines very highly of your character!

I hate to tell you this Kate...but...it sucks when you're on the uphill side of the learning curve. but eventually, as you learn more, the curve does flatten out. everybody who drives has been there. and you are definitely getting better; your dad is letting you do more complex maneuvers (if he didn't think you couldn't do it, he wouldn't let you try). keep up the good work!

Have your Dad unbolt drill some new holes you
Need to get that driver's seat moved forward you can't reach the peddles without struggling.
When I drive my steering wheel is about 2" from my tummy.
    You gotta have full
    Controll at all times.

    Semi.

As an ex trucker , you're doing great Kate...tell the old man to take a chill pill...LOL. But he does have a big responsibility in teaching you the ropes. You are basically driving a manual truck with auto shift , so if you don't drive a stick shift car , then it is a bit difficult to get used to. Also a lot of people would have a melt down with someone barking orders at them all the time, so hats off to you young lady, and for not editing your mishaps out of the video!

🇺🇸 An easy way to get used to lining up a vehicle you've never run or don't run much can be done on a highway with painted lines! As your going down the highway keep checking your mirrors to keep yourself exactly centered and just pay attention to where you are looking forward. Use something on the hood, fender or etc., with enough practice it'll become 2nd nature. Hope it helps 🙏 God bless and good luck you got this 👍
