  • In this Video you will see what troubleshgooting process I did to identify the cause of the No-Starting condition on this car.
The problem ended up being a Failed Starter, and it was caused by an Oil Leak that developed at the Vacuum Pump.
The VW OEM Part Number for The Starter Motor for MK5's equipped with Manual Transmission is: 02Z911023J
The Bosh Remanufactured Starter Motor part Number is:
    02Z911023JXKT
It appears that these Vacuum Pumps are prone to leak and on my next Video I will be showing how to install a Vacuum Pump Delete Kit for the 2.5 L Engine to cure this problem once and Forever on this Engine so It doesn't ruin another Starter.

Also, one last thing if anyone reads the comments and needs to change their starter. I did this whole job with the car on the ground; no lifting, no jack stands, nothing. You'll be on your back to remove the plastic under the engine and behind the driver's side wheel. But once you do, the starter is right there. Thanks again.

I noticed that there were a lot of cuts / skips in the video. I suspect those are the places where you edited out all the cuss words that were directed towards the VW engineers who made it such a pain to change a starter. :)

Grumpy OldMan lookup the video on this motor for how you change the thermostat ! These cars are absolute crap in reliability and diy service , at least if they were reliable i wouldn’t mind but mix in these kinds of day long repairs and it’s just a stupid manufacturer period , btw it took me 6 hours to replace my alternator on this same engine as the video , don’t even get me started

Great vid.. I love my jetta but its constantly not working... I dont wanna sell it but each additional repair keeps pushing me to do it.. I have the exact same issue with an oil leak. How did you fix the leak And how much was the starter. I really cant afford to pay for a tow and pay a mechanic labour fee at the moment.

Is it easier to change the vacuum pump or it's gasket with the starter out of the way?

I’ve changed mine, but starter is staying engaged and won’t quit turning

The oil leak didn’t ruin a perfectly good starter, what ruined it was when VW engineers decided to use it

This is great but we don't even know why where how what to do and what is ground what is use light? Remember sweety we non mechanic ignorant people have no idea what u talking about. In order for us to be confident enough to do this kind of job we need step by step thorough explanations. It would be soooo great since you'd help thousands if not millions of us mechanical ignorant people not get RIPPED OFF AS EASILY AND SAVE US FROM PAYING LOTS OF $$ we poor people don't even have. I don't believe you mechanics lose customers and $ why?? Most people are lazy to do this so they still will take u their vehicles plus the more honest u are the more customers u get. Just like karma. Heck if I get great honest service through out the yrs. I'd recommend you everywhere and even throw in a little extra if I ha the $$ kuz I'd be so happy with your services!

Don't even try if you can't understand what he's saying. If you can't figure the easy things out them you shouldn't be working on a car

Ground is to the black/ negative terminal on the battery cable. Put one end on the ground and test on red positive wire to make sure you have good ground connection. Unhook battery negative cable when changing starter or you'll get a good shock and possibly ruin your electricals/ engine computers. If you don't understand basic mechanic language like other person said you probably shouldn't be working on your car because not every job is straight forward .
