In this tutorial, I show you how to build an architectural scale model from balsa wood and basswood strips. I cover several DIY techniques for creating the Ultimate, Realistic Diorama. You can apply these techniques to anything that you're working on, such as dioramas, scale models, model railway scenery, model railroad layouts, wargaming terrain, warhammer 40k, d&d scenery, tabeltop gaming, action figure displays, dollhouse accessories, and whatever else comes to mind.
I show you how to make a model house from scratch that looks hyper realistic, just using some miniature, strip basswood and balsa wood you can buy from the hobby and crafts store! I take you though every step of building a wooden frame, adding clapboard siding to the frame of the building, making a roof structure and shingles from balsa wood, adding a wooden porch, making a miniature brick chimney from XPS foam, Painting and weathering everything, adding 3D printed furniture/cookware/silverware/accessories, and adding greenery like static grass!

This is so realistic that the government called to adjust your property taxes.
This is not modelling, but pure 3D art ! He knows a lot about colors too !
Thank you so much!! I really appreciate your kind words!
This is beyond amazing, it actually feels more realistic than a real house, I dunno, it’s amazing though.
Thank you so much, I’m so happy to hear that it looks realistic!! Thanks for watching!
I genuinely wanted to be there at 33:10
@smolworldworkshop hi , any of ur art work is for sale?
Pretty much my reaction, he must know how to build a house. :)
@@V3847TU hi there! Not at the moment, but if/when I do sell stuff I’ll definitely announce it in a video or something :)
I am speechless! This is by far the most realistic old cabin diorama I know. I just LOVE it!
Thank you very much, I'm so glad you like it!
So, you know this cabin? Is he a pretty polite cabin? : P
Lol omg u need help.
Pretty sure the only reason it looks "realistic" is because he used the element's around outdoors just too enhance or make the diorama looked more "realistic" dioramas builds have always been realistic with all the attention too detail's...
@@TheBlakus420 Yup! :P
This is absolutely one of the most realistic and beautiful dioramas I have ever seen. You clearly put in so much hard work into making these educational videos! You're like the Bob Ross of dioramas.
Thank you, I’m so happy that you liked the diorama! I really appreciate your kind words, and I’m flattered to be compared to Bob Ross haha! Thanks again for watching!
This is 100% the kind of dioramas I want to build. Fully framed and essentially "up to code" kind of thing. Like builing a real building. 😊 Fantastic work, I look forward to seeing more long format videos from you!
Thank you so much! I really enjoy making miniatures similar to the real thing too. I don’t always build the frame of a building, but since the frame is visible in this project I felt it was necessary to do. Thanks again for your kind words!
This is how the best building in the world are started. Scaled
I wish there was a lil’ 🌙outhouse. That would’ve been the cherry on top. But I love the intricate details and reality that all the layers bring. My dream is to make my own minis to this degree of detail. ❤❤❤
Thank you, and yes an outhouse would be a cool detail!! Good luck with all your projects, and I’m sure they’ll look fantastic, thanks for watching :)
*Awesome, looks very realistic! Great job.*
Thank you so much!!! I’m so glad you like it!
The chimney painting and weathering process was my favorite part. The end result was so satisfying and looked amazing. Glad I clicked your video and am now subscribed!
Thank you!! The bricks were time consuming but very fun to do. And thank you so much for subscribing and supporting the channel :D
I like that you did the inside and the outside not a lot of people do!
Thank you!! I don’t always do interior detail on all my buildings, but I’m happy I did with this one! Thanks for watching!
That's one of the best/most realistic dioramas I have seen!
Thank you so much that really means a lot! Thanks for watching :)
Super impressive! As a lifelong carpenter, I can say with some authority that your weathering is highly realistic as well as your construction methods. Fascinating!
Thank you!! I’m so happy to hear that the diorama is actually to reality! Thanks for watching :)
I am as a carpenter too, agree to your comment 💯%
I would love to see you tackle a 4x8 train layout.. This level of detail is breath taking
Thank you!! That would be awesome! To be honest, I haven’t been too much of a model train guy, but I do have big plans to eventually make a huge diorama. It’ll probably be a while before I get to it though!
How amazing! I also like to make fairy houses out of cardboard
Thank you!! And that’s great your work is very impressive!!
geez. ive seen a lot of tutorials over the CZcams years, but this one is the best I've ever seen. you have a great eye for realism and scale.
seeing this, I realized I've never seen bricks to scale properly. these are. absolutely beautiful work of art man.
Thank you so much for all your kind compliments!!! I’m so glad you like the bricks, it was definitely one of my favorite parts. Thanks again for watching!
This cabin looks absolutely realistic! I think it would be cool to take some vintage looking black and white photos of this and frame them. Great job! I've always wanted to build a 1/16 scale barn in this fashion.
Thank you!! That’s a cool idea about the vintage looking photos too! And I hope you do build a barn in 1/16 scale, that sounds like it would be awesome!!
Very realistic! I like how you used the block to square everything off and the fireplace is awesome - Great work! 🙂
Thank you so much!!!
The attention to detail in the diorama and the video are next level!
Thank you for your kind words! I’m so glad you enjoyed the video :)
I'm not into dioramas at all, but I watched the entire thing. Fascinating. Awesome job, looks so real.
Thank you for watching the video, I’m so happy you liked the diorama!!
This is one of the most incredible dioramas I've ever seen!
Thank you!!!
That's really amazing! I actually don't have the skills or knowledge building a diorama, but I just love watching someone as skilled as you building them so effortless.
Thank you so much, I’m so glad that you find the process entertaining to watch!
This was so therapeutic for me. Watching you create such a detailed cabin. Thank you so much for sharing.
I’m glad you enjoyed the video! Thank you so much for your support, and I’m that I get to make these videos for you!!
I am speechless, absolutely the most realistic , amazing , incredible diorama old cabins I've ever seen!!!
Wow thank you so much for your kind words! I’m so happy you liked the diorama :)
I don't normally leave comments but this video was so good I had to comment it! How realistic it looked and was made was really incredible! The finished cabin looked like it was actually on a homestead in the 1930s. You did an incredible job with that cabin!
Thank you so much, I’m so glad that you liked the diorama! Thanks again for watching!
This looks more realistic than a real-life cabin!
Haha thank you so much, I appreciate it!!
At the beginning, if it wasn’t for the grass, I would’ve thought this was an actual house! Great job!
Thank you!
Fabulous. I hope I dream myself inside there tonight.
Thank you!!!
This is absolutely astounding!! I learned some very useful tips too- thank u so much! It looks indistinguishable from a real life cabin in the woods! You’re a master craftsman!
Wow thank you so much for your kind words!! I’m so happy you learned some helpful techniques and enjoyed the video! :D
This was excellent! Definitely keep making “full scale” dioramas! Great job
Thank you, I’m so glad you like these dioramas! Thanks for watching!
That's insane! You're so underrated
Thank you!!
For authenticity, you need to insulate the walls with 1/24th scale old movie posters, newspapers and comic books from the 1920's-1940's. :D
Looks great! Thank you for showing us how you made this.
Haha that would be cool, thank you so much for watching and I’m glad you liked the video!!
@@smolworldworkshop I'm interested in making some 1/24 - 1/25th scale dioramas for my hobby shop for shelf displays to showcase my model cars as well as inspire people to build model kits in general.
I have ideas, it's just hard to get them out into the real world, as it were. Also, trying to get the time in to build them can be just as challenging.
Stunning work! This was a master-class in modelling and decorating. These longer vids are definitely worth the wait.
Thank you so much!! I’m glad you like the longer videos!!
Awesome! This makes me want to get back into miniatures. I have a small log cabin I started a few years ago, but never finished. Very inspiring!
Thank you!! Good luck with your cabin if you decide to go back to it! I have tons of projects that I’ve started and still need to finish
The new generation's best shot at owning a home! 🎉🏠 🤏
Superb build. Excellent walk-through the process. Well done!
Thank you so much!!
You've inspired me to build it!😁@@smolworldworkshop
@@allymoizer5166 glad to hear that!!! Hope you have fun!!
this cabin reminds me of a lot of the older houses I've seen in my town and the neighboring city I frequented growing up, this is insane
That’s so cool to hear thanks for sharing!
This is absolutely amazing! I cannot believe the level of realistic detail that you were able to achieve! I’m seriously blown away! I especially love the fireplace and chimney, you did such great work with those bricks! And just the other day I was walking my dog and I noticed that the front porches on some of the old houses in the area were all kind of slanted down. I couldn’t understand why the homeowners hadn’t fixed that settling😂 Now I realize that it’s not a bug, it’s a feature. Thank you so much for sharing this incredible build!
Thank you so much for all your kind words! I’m so happy you like the diorama, and thanks for watching :)
The realism in this diorama blew my mind. The details are absolutely on point when compared to old rotting homes I can easily find not too far from where I live.
The way rot damages the wooden facade, to the way the discoloration on the porch deck reflects how various species of mold and moss invade such surfaces.
Thank you so much!! I’m so glad you like all the weathering effects! Thanks for watching
Congratulations! You created a very realistic replica of a country house/cabin.
Thank you!!!
This blew my mind when I saw it on Facebook, it is incredibly real looking. Amazing job, can't wait to try to get to this level someday.
Thank you!!! I’m so glad you decided to check out the video!! And good luck with your modeling projects!
@@smolworldworkshop Absolutely! Regarding you using real dirt for your home made dirt paste, do you just get dirt from outside and use it? Or do you bake it prior or anything to get rid of bacteria? I've heard of people using real world things like this for dirt and I feel like I've heard of people baking it or something first? Anyway, just curious because I have a base I'm going to be making soon and would love to try your technique out. Also the same question for using sticks found outdoors to use as trees and logs.
@@nickshobbycorner I personally use the dirt as is, with the soil I would put it through a sieve to get finer pieces. But I didn’t bake the pieces to kill any bacteria. I’ll usually let the soil and sticks sit in my garage for afew days and dry out completely.
I am aware that people have had certain toxic bacteria or moss on their projects that have ruined their projects. So I guess I’d say it’s a safer bet to sterilize anything you pick up off the ground. Ultimately the decision is up to you but I hope this kinda helped!!
I appreciate the info man. I subscribed to your patreon yesterday, looking forward to seeing your new projects!
@@nickshobbycorner of course!! And thank you so much for your support on patreon!! That’s what really keeps me going and makes me excited to make more videos so thanks again!!
I've always been very impressed with dioramas and I've wanted to get into making them, but every time I've brought it up with the hobby guys I know, they balk and immediately warn me that its "so difficult to do well", but this makes it look really approachable and fun.
Hi there glad to here that this video makes model making like approachable! I wouldn’t worry about what others say, if you want to get into the hobby then you definitely should! Thanks for watching :)
Your patience is God's send
Most realistic representation I've seen. Going the extra mile with texture, weathering, and color mixing.
Thank you so much!! I’m glad you appreciate all the little details! Thanks again for watching!
This was amazing! Loved to see how you made everything, thanks!! Love the longer complete videos!
Thank you so much, I’m glad you enjoyed it!!! Thanks for the feedback about the longer videos, I plan on making more like this!
THIS IS SO COOL. gonna be my new hobby
Thank you and that’s great! I definitely recommend model making as a fun hobby!
A scaled down architectural model with immaculate details! Amazing!
Thank you very much!
I have to tell you, I’ve lived in a 140 year old house for 13 years. As a experienced carpenter I’ve put in tons of time with repairs and painted siding. Your build as I see it is spot on and if you would place your cabin in my backyard you would think that it’s been there it’s whole time. Hats off sir!! Well done!❤🙏🏻👍🏻
Wow thank you so much for all your kind compliments :) that really means a lot coming from you being that you’re working with these materials in real life all the time! Thank you so much, and thanks for watching!
Phenomenal work! Some very cool techniques in there I'll definitely have to try out on my own builds
Thank you!! I hope these techniques work well for you!
I love the framing, cutest little 2x4s ever lol. This is so fun to watch
Thank you haha, the framing was very rewarding to construct! Thanks for watching!
Reminds me of my grandma house 🏠 hers had windows on each side of the door 🚪 😊 she lived there until the early 80’s. It was her mother’s house after her husband passed away.So many good meals and memories were served in that little house 🏡 . Thank you 🙏🏾 for posting this 🫶🏾
Hi there, thank you for sharing that with me! I’m so glad this was able to bring back some good memories. Thanks again for watching :)
Love the long format. Really amazing work! Look forward to watching your other videos. Subscribed!
Thank you for your support! I'm glad you like the longer format, I love making the completed projects. I have lots of ideas for future full length diorama videos that I plan on working on soon. In the meantime I plan on posting a couple of the shorter format videos to fill the gap between uploads!
@@smolworldworkshop You are clearly very talented and wish you a lot of success with your channel!
@@dcslye8330 thank you so much for your encouraging words!!
Goddamn dude that is so amazingly detailed and realistic!! I may have missed it but how long did this build take?
Once you yellowfied the grass a bit it looks EXACTLY like the shacks set up during the goldrush days in Victoria, Australia (I live there)(Australia tends to have greens on the yellow side in nature as apposed to the blue greens in North America)
Thank you so much!! This took me about 50 hours of just building time, but it took a lot more in reality since I was filming it.
I’m glad you like the grass!! And I’ll have to check out those old shacks from the gold rush because that sound so cool!!
This is absolutely incredible! Looks just like some of the houses we have at the museum I work at. The detail on this is insane
Thank you, I’m glad you like the details, thanks again for watching!
I absolutely love that cabin I really can't put in words how wonderful it is and how it brings back memories
Thank you so much! Glad to hear it brings back memories!
Holy cow!! The brick portion on the fireplace alone is impressive, as is the rest of the video - nicely done! I'll definitely be using some of the techniques you showed. Thanks!
Thank you, I especially had fun doing the bricks!! And glad to here that! Good luck with your projects!
It makes me want to walk in and sit down, it's that realistic. Amazing!
Thank you so much, I’m glad you like the diorama!
