    Have you ever wanted to fill an art journal or sketchbook as you travel? Are you curious what goes into an artist’s travel sketchbook? Wherever you are dreaming of traveling, you’re going to take away ideas for how to keep a travel journal and document your experience.
    My travel sketchbooks aren't so much about art technique as they are about documenting my experience, my form of art therapy. So whether you think of yourself as an artist or not, but want to start a travel journal, my intention with this video is to show you lots of different things you might document in your traveler’s notebook.
    Especially if you’re a bit intimidated by the precise methods of urban sketching, and wondering how else you might be able to keep your own travel sketchbook.
    If you’re like me, you love being able to peek inside the sketchbooks of artists and travelers, so in this video I’ll show a variety of the many types of travel journals I keep - including one of my favorite ways of travel journaling WITHOUT any art supplies - it doesn’t even happen in a sketchbook!
    I’ll share my thought process and the creative challenges I gave myself to be able to fill my sketchbooks quickly, without overthinking, so that I can capture the most meaningful moments of my trip. You may wish to try this yourself if you find it hard to fill your sketchbooks - traveling or not.

    Which of these types of travel journals would you most like to try?

      I loved the creative passport and postcards in a box the most. I really enjoyed seeing everything you shared.

      I make art journals out of books too, but I’d like to see your process for them all. Lol

    Again I enjoyed watching your video, which is also interesting if you're not traveling. I am always fascinated by your collages. The way you put all the images and papers together, the colours, you really have an eye for it. I guess it's like you say in the video about not being to precious with your journal. I think that's also true for the images. You have to feel really free using them and not being afraid to mess them up. When I have images I really like I feel less free to experiment with them. That's still a block I have to break through. There will always be new images. By this I assigned the task to myself to just tear up the beautiful images ;) Thank you Lisa for sharing and have a wonderful time in beautiful Paris!

      Yes, Alice - I agree about not wanting use the images or supplies that are favorites - it is a breakthrough when we give ourselves permission to USE UP all of our supplies. What are we really saving them for anyway? Good for you for giving yourself an assignment - keep me posted on how that works out in your visual journal.

    I have followed you for a long time (around 2009 ish maybe), it started with your book I think but I remember you working on that 1000+ recycled painting project. You helped me with my love of journaling. I had no idea where I was going with it but my journals became so important in my life. Thank you :)

    I resonate so much with your journal style! When my husband and I travel, now he knows that'll probably want to keep every bit of paper menu or flyer and is always like, "hey you want this bit of garbage, babe?" haha. I love the freeness of it all. So, so beautiful. Thank you for sharing!

      Great to find a kindred travel journal spirit, Christi! And how wonderful that your husband so kindly offers you the ephemera!

    I really like the idea of journaling on post cards and mailing them to myself! I buy the postcards but then I both want send them to someone and want them for myself--terrible, I know. This solves both of those wants and the post card gets a postmark and some "weathering" along the way. Winner-winner.

    • @LisaSonora
      @LisaSonora  Před rokem

      The solution is to buy duplicates - I to share, I to keep! Yes! thank you for sharing!

    This is so inspiring. I really love your journals. Do you do any of the stamping on your travels or wait until you get back?
    My favorite one of these was the creative passport and also the postcards in a box. I love simple book binding types of things. This video has inspired me. I took a pivotal trip 4 years ago to Prague that was a deep personal and spiritual transformation. I have all my photos in my phone, and all the maps, train tickets and more that I collected in a folder. I keep on saying I want to create a journal for it or find one to use. I then freak out a bit because the maps and everything mean so much to me. What advice would you have so that I actually create it? Thanks for what you do. I love what you share.

    • @LisaSonora
      @LisaSonora  Před rokem

      thank you Monica! Since you like the creative passport and the postcards in a box, you could try both of those with your Prague trip mementos. I would photocopy some of the maps / ephemera and then experiment with those copies - that way you still have your originals in case you don't want to commit to cutting, gluing. Once you get started it all just starts flowing. You might get a pretty box for all the mementos that is big enough for your travel journal to fit - that way everything stays together.

    Is your preferred altered book with sewn in signatures, glueing pages together, or taking some out?!- I’ve done altered book journals that way! Altered books are my fave!

    As a lifelong collector of postcards, your postcard journal looks fascinating! I was also wondering if you offer the "creative passport" class online. I've made my own journals before. I learned how in a class called Ticket to Venice, by Mary Ann Moss of Dispatch from LA. Thanks for the great video!

    Other than the journal artists you collaborated with on what the difference between and visual and art journal is video, who are your main journal artist inspirations?? Loved this vid!!

    • @LisaSonora
      @LisaSonora  Před rokem

      the artists didn't really collaborate with me, we were visiting together in person and/or they were in a workshop with me, and I invited them to add their own page inside my visual journal. It's like a memento for me.
      I discuss my views on the differences between visual and art journaling in so many of my videos. I hope you enjoy them! Thanks for your questions!

    What paper or journal is that? Also what paint and pen? Do you paint first and then write or vice verse?
    I love your art journals!

    What's your "travel art kit" look like? When you're 'collaging, painting etc." I can't imagine bringing rubber alphabet stamps, though I love them.

      I have often traveled with my alphabet stamps, I'll make a new video soon about my current travel setup - and I'm also teaching workshops, so it's a bit bulky. :)
