I never knew you, depart from me, as a viewer said, seems way scarier and dreadful
@@Black4everrulz it works on one of two levels depending on how good you think you are:
- if you know you were bad and never repented, it's the dread of being found out. you knew deep down God wouldn't be fooled, but hearing the words still somehow manages to feel even worse than the dread.
- if you thought you followed the rules God laid out for you as best as you could and you were still cast out, it's the horror of unending punishment, and also the utter confusion of not knowing why. was your best not enough? was it not really your best; had you been unrepentant and not realized somehow? Is God capricious? Now something might not be wrong with just you, but being itself might be twisted and cruel even after death.
Exactly, imagine thinking that you were praying to a diety or something that you thought was good and you could trust, only only realize that it was all for nothing and that no matter what you do or where you go, there's nothing but suffering and torture.

Personally, when it comes to analog horror, the most chilling sentence to me is Channel 58's "This message will repeat until there are none to read it".
The concept of a government demanding all citizens to "unalive" themselves because they lost a war and don't want to give in to the enemy country is terrifying. Kinda wish there was a whole series around this idea.
I think the even scarier part of that was that it was, in universe, a hoax. That message was real, though had never been intended to play, but it did, and it didn't stop until the entire broadcast had finished. That's more than enough time for people to start preparing to go through with it, entirely convinced it was real.
Imagine people rounding up their kids and killing them thinking it's the right thing to do, only to look over at their TV, now saying "haha whoops sorry false alarm"
Imagine those who killed themselves before they got a chance to realize
Local 58 is terrifying man
now I definitely should check out 58 for the first time

“Hold shift to run” is the scariest sentence in any horror game
Voluntarily trapping yourself in a room with only one exit while something threatening waits outside the door is true terror.
You know you can't leave without being attacked and/or killed when you open the door. You know you can't survive in that room for very long.
What are the chances that someone else will come lure the threat away in order to save you? And what if those attempts to save you don't work?

Dude the sentence “Nobody came for me.” And “Who have I been praying to this whole time?” Always gave me chills, it encapsulates the feeling of dreadful loneliness and for a single moment you can put yourself in the view of Mark Healthcliff, a teenager who prayed to God for any hope and for someone to say him only for that God to be a monster- a alternate and for no one to come to check on him after days and days of being trapped alone in his room. That feeling of dread as you sympathize with Mark really brings the entire volume one and volume three (I believe it was three where you see the notes) to a disturbing and unsettling conclusion.
Mandela Catalog is a analog horror well done.
Literally, Mark died scared, angry, confused and alone and he was trapped for 3 days and was forced to let go of whatever false hope he had before killing himself.

HOLY SHIT I NEVER NOTICED THAT
For me, the scariest sentence in the series comes from volume 1. Very similar to yours, except instead of emphasizing the hopelessness of our main characters, it emphasizes the threat of the alternates. Mark is trapped in his room, alone for days, he can’t leave but he can’t stay. Because of the police’s whole “nothing is worth the risk” motto, he’s fucked. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. So he decides to at least try and fight against the thing keeping him trapped. He leaves his room, and we see pitch black as it is too dark to see anything. The alternate laughs. It knows it has already won. Mark shouts in desperation, “YOU FUCKING BASTARD!” And shoots. The screen goes red. And then...
“uh oh! bad decision, mark!”
That one sentence. Terrifying. Mark, desperate, starving, alone, tries to fight back against his captor. Everything and everyone has abandoned him. This is his only shot. And yet the alternate is not serious at all. From the second Mark opened that door, there was no winning. The alternate inflicts him with MAD and Mark kills himself. And that sentence proves just how horrifying these creatures are. Mark took his last stand, and the alternate’s response is to cheekily say “uh oh”. And the “bad decision, mark” part is just so mocking. It was his only decision, yet the alternate makes fun of him for it. The alternate knows it can’t lose, so it doesn’t treat the situation with any seriousness at all.
If I was a betting person I would bet a lot of money that not taking things seriously will be the alternets downfall
I think that it’s alluded to in the series that the only way to possibly win against an alternate, is to not know they exist. To not be aware of them. To not perceive them. That is your only chance of really surviving. I could be wrong though, when I think back on them preying on fear. Another way to defend yourself against them is to not be afraid of them- which is wholly impossible
@@asleepyb0i400 from what I remember, the way to “beat” them is to actively seek the knowledge they give. MAD is inflicted by them whispering secrets about the universe to you that are so horrible you kill yourself. Naturally, the best way and only way to avoid this is by wanting to hear this knowledge. I’m pretty sure that’s how somebody survives an encounter in volume 2.
@@asleepyb0i400 Well, the guy in the second volume seemed to manage, I think? To not be scared I mean
Had mark just stayed in his room, the alternate wouldn’t have given up. They are very patient. If he stayed in his room and never opened the door, he would’ve just eventually died of dehydration. His only chance of survival, I think, would have been to not shoot himself upon getting MAD, and just leave the house. Alternates are physically weak and, I think, incapable of killing people themselves. Had he stuck through it, he could’ve become part of the surviving 3% of MAD victims. But, who can blame him? That illness inflicted him with knowledge, the knowledge of the deepest secrets of the universe, the knowledge that Lucifer won the fight against heaven, that the one he’d been praying to all this time was the pure embodiment of evil. No wonder 97% of victims die by their own hand. Imagine knowing that, not only are God and Satan real, but evil won over good, that everything you do is being watched by the forces of hell, that everything done in the name of the Lord has been done in the name of the Antichrist, that your reality exists only to amuse him. I don’t think I’d be able to live knowing that.
It’s shocking to me that this concept hasn’t been explored before. It’s scarier than any horror movie I can think of, because it could be completely true and we would never know. Who have we really been praying to all this time? There are three answers to this question. One, God, or at least some form of supernatural force that affects events in the world. Two, nobody. No one and nothing is listening. And three, someone is listening, but it’s the exact opposite of who we’d hope for. Those two are both terrifying, and I don’t know which is worse.
I watched the mandela catalog at school with friends, and every time anybody mentioned it, i would brag that i didnt find it scary at all. Watching even just parts of this video with headphones while home alone in the dark really humbles someone doesnt it 💀

And yes, Alternates can too be part of it, we have no chances of knowing who's who even if they prove they are who they are yet, we still live with them, never knowing the dangers that may arise.
Or maybe we all are insane. :) or maybe it's just me.
I never understood the true lore of the Mandela catalog until now and now I understand why it is one of the best analog horrors and how dark it truly is

Dude as a Christian that sentence as well as marks entire journal gave me chills I always get emotional when I rewatch it tbh
Same
I have pretty much tge same feeling, not really so much emotional, but emotional still.
As a muslim i can feel that sentence to a whole other level. I'm used to prayers so reading "who I've been praying to" still gives me chills. Humans are created for something, much bigger than this earthly life. There's something about day of judgment and the life after it. Believe on it or not it doesn't matter because truth will eventually reveal itself in future.
@@justamanofculture12 that's something i'm pretty sure every religion and all of science can agree on.
The truth will eventually reveal itself. Of we will reveal it ourselves. whether that be the laws of the entire multiverse, or godlike beings, we will figure it out eventually
Honestly when your beliefs are flipped upside down(or if you prefer the term "splachna") it becomes a terrifying world in which you would become to believe that even the God that made you for a purpose may not even have anything other than for you to be driven to pure misery and ruin at the end of one's life.
Mark being trapped in a confined room with the threat being just right outside the door is what's so scary to me. to know that the alternate is just on the other side, waiting for its victim to lean towards the idea of death, and you can FEEL its presence, is scary. it's realistic. most horror movies set up the idea that you *can* find a way to escape, but not the Mandella catalogue. horror movies make you think critically about the given situation, but the Mandela catalogue makes us aware of how hopeless the situation actually is.
What makes that scene creeper is that it constantly talks to him, asking him to open the door, about his family, his life choices, etc. I think later on in the series a similar situation happens to another character but he lasts much longer, and what he experiences is essentially an entire families worth of alternates chilling outside his door talking to each other, casually waiting for him.
@@waspoptic I think it would be much worse if the alternate was quiet the whole time. You would think about leaving but not want to take the risk
@@waspoptic THIS TOO. the fact that the alternate constantly talked to mark about his family and what he had to lose added on to the horror factor. you said this perfectly
@@sgrp2706in my opinion, i think both you and wasp have a solid stance on the horror of the situation. both sound equally terrifying, the alternate quietly waiting for mark to let his guard down would have DEFINITELY been scary, and the canon outcome is just as chilling. the alternative almost mocking mark in a sense got me GOOD. it made me feel more compelled to root for his survival, knowing that he had more than his life to lose
@@waspoptic the audio of an entire family worth of alternates was mark as well.
The scariest line i've hear is, "He promise he will be a better person tomorrow, but he never wakes up after that."

“You’re not alone” can be taken two different ways in this video
The horror of this is really well told by the fact that, even though Mark had a loaded gun, against an enemy he knew the exact location of, chose to turn the gun on himself. That is terrifying.

There are a lot of scary sentences in this series. Here are my favorites:
“ do not talk too much or you might reveal your fears”
“ your new friend is somewhere in your house “
“ I WILL DECEIVE THE SHEPHARDS “
“ the call can be ended when the caller stops responding “
And of course: “who have I been praying to all this time?”

"WHAT'S UP GUYS, TODAY, WE'RE GOING TO BE DECEIVING TWO SHEPHARDS INTO THINKING I'M ACTUALLY AN ANGEL!! GET READY TO SMAH THAT-"
I think the alternate saying “I am not going away” is what really did me in
Mark’s last hope probably was the alternate losing interest and leaving but the alternate reassured him that he will either starve to death in that room or open the door

I read it and felt genuine fear before your explanation. The sentence itself plays on your fears of the unknown, your veil on reality is torn off and you see for what it may or may not even be. It’s horrifying. Who have I been praying to this whole time? I am scared.
“What’s the scariest title and thumbnail I’ve ever seen?”
*_”this one.”_*
The sentence "Who have I been praying to all this time?" is way scarier without this Mandela Catalogue context. I feel like it's more mysterious and leans more into cosmic horror. Also, when you pray to your god, you feel like you know them, they know you, and you know their intentions are good. For example, imagine texting your friend and after months you find out that friend is actually a complete stranger.
I don't get the friend example
@@funnykitten2927 Imagine having a friend named Mike. Mike and you are good friends, he's a nice guy, he's always there for you and you feel really comfortable with him. Now Imagine Mike went went on a trip somewhere overseas for a couple of months, only way you have been communicating is text. Almost every day you and your good friend, Mike, are texting and keeping in touch. Then Mike comes home from a trip and tells you that he's sorry he couldn't contact you all this time because he lost his phone at the airport, just before he left the country. Now, who have you been texting though? It seemed exactly like Mike...
This is the "uncanny-ness" I was referring to in my original comment.
P.S. sorry if this example went for a little too long 😅
@@sabakandashvili5373That sounds like a good short horror story, but doesn’t exactly match the message. The message could lean more towards praying to someone you don’t even know exists or not. So instead of messaging a friend named Mike that isn’t actually Mike, you’re messaging someone you hope is Mike.

This analog horror series is so psychologically tormeting, daunting and somber, I love it. Thanks for covering the series, Pastra.
The scariest sentence I’ve heard in TMC, was “distraught at the sight of her missing infant”. The fact that it was spammed all I ever the screen, with the baby cradle being a coffin, the woman being hung in the air by a rope, it was terrifying. TMC has to be the best web series I’ve viewed ever.

Just wanted to jump in with a slight correction - it's not "just" an Alternate that Mark had been praying to. It was Satan, the original Alternate who took the place of Jesus in order to deceive people. Great video though! As a Christian myself, MC is genuinely the scariest analog horror series I've seen and the sentence "Who have I been praying to all this time?" Struck some primal fear in me I didn't even know I had lol
Im not even religious and that sentence is chilling, the world of the mandela catalogue is amazing at striking primal fears.
For real 😂
My God, the thought of a universe where Christ is real, but was probably like merc'd and replaced with Satan who only wants to torture and kill the Human Race
@@DeleteMeSooner you’re using the wrong emoji
I am more of a satanist/athiest myself but I got the the first time I watched it. The biblical scriptures describe satan almost exactly as an alternate, he blends in, makes you think you are hearing the voice of god, thats why its so easy for him to twist the faith of the religious to do evil. As a satanist I don't have faith in a god of any kind, but I worship the pop culture iconography of satan as a symbol of rebellion and freedom. I don't belive god will save us, I think humanity uses a higher power as a convenient excuse to not make the change themeslves, but that aside I am also more agnostic because I believe its possible there is a god, I just don't think we can understand him.
You know it’s bad when there’s a link to a suicide hotline
One of the single creepiest sentences I've ever heard was actually from a D&D campaign that I was a part of a couple years back.
Me and my party were inside of a massive cave and despite it being so large, it was extremely empty. I remember at one point we got to a little alcove and written on the wall in some kind of chalk or maybe charcoal was the line "we're out of arrows." Something about finding that so deep in this cave with only a small crawlspace left to go through absolutely freaked me out and even though I don't think we ran into anything, it still lingers in my mind.
I was dead tired, went to bed, and woke up to this playing on auto play. You can imagine my paranoia when groggy half asleep me sees that creepy thumbnail. That's more a testament to how good your art is. Keep doing what you do, Pastra.

I personally think the most terrifying sentence comes after, as Mark writes : "My eyes are now wide open"
Realising he was praying to an alternate the entire time in his last moment of living
*. . . O h*
You've ironically enough opened my eyes cuz only now I understood what that line meant. He must've understood that when the alternate revealed it to him by infecting him with M.A.D.
"Is Pepsi ok?"

whenever you get a warning you already know it’s gonna be good lmao
The scariest part imo is the factor of realization. When the character realizes that he has doomed himself and knows that eventually he will die. He indirectly prayed to the very thing that was tormenting him, and the dread that comes after the realization that you just fucked yourself over is awful.
It's like forgetting something important in school but way worse

Was it the one about the brother who died and told his brother to never die
@@Flawzie nah it was a different one but I like that one too one
Here is the whole thing
Most people who talk about "near death experiences" are full of shit. They're usually religious phonies who use their car accidents and surgeries as an opportunity to shill for their preferred myths and superstitions. They talk about bright lights, a sense of calm, blah, blah, blah. None of it's true. Last year I had a major heart attack. I spent 10 minutes legally dead before the doctors were able to restore my heartbeat. 10 minutes I spent; staring
*directly* into the eyes of God.
You may ask me, quite reasonably, that if I know God exists then why don't I go to church? Why don't I pray? And, if you're feeling particularly macabre, why do I continue to take my heart medication to prolong my life when I know I'll meet God when I die?
I can answer all of these questions at once. If you saw the God that I saw, you would do
***anything*** not to see it again.
