  • 1 Corinthian 15:3-8
For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance:
That Christ died for our sins
    according to the Scriptures,
    that he was buried,
that he was raised on the third day
    according to the Scriptures,
and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve.
After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time.
(Most of them are still living, though some have fallen asleep.)
Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles.
(And last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.)
    Acts 2:38
Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Our sins hurt us, they hurt other people around us, and drive us out of the presence of God. Even if we know what is good, we often choose to do what is bad. We can’t get rid of our own sin. But Jesus Christ died for us and for our salvation. This was not a surprise but was in accordance with what prophets had said many centuries before. But God did not leave him in the grave: to prove to everyone in the world that Jesus was telling the truth about God, he raised him from the dead. This, too, was a fulfillment of ancient promises from God’s prophets. After his resurrection he appeared to hundreds of people. Through his death and resurrection we can have our sins forgiven and be restored to friendship with God, if we put our faith in Jesus and follow him. We express this by being baptized in water-it is an image of purification and rebirth. Finally, God does not leave us alone after we believe and are baptized: he sends his Holy Spirit to live in us and teach us wisdom and kindness and love and to guide us in our lives. In our faith, baptism and sharing in one Spirit, we are knitted together as the people of God all over the world. Even after we die, through Jesus' death and resurrection, we receive eternal life in the presence of God.
