    What is a WH Question? What, When, Where, Who and Why! (also How)
    Prerequisite skills:
    11 Pre-linguistic skills • 11 SKILLS ALL CHILDREN...
    50 Expressive Vocabulary Words • HOW TO GET A CHILD TO ...
    Understanding and answering concrete Yes/No questions • HOW TO TEACH TODDLERS ...
    When is it typical for a child to understand and answer WH questions?
    Between 24-36 Months of Age. (after Echolalia decreases and spontaneous sentences are forming - combining 2-4 words )
    MY TOP 7 TIPS for teaching WH Questions:
    #1. Make it FUN
    #2. Keep it interesting
    #3. Use varying pitch and tone (vocal intonation) when asking your child a WH question
    #4. Begin with concrete concepts such as WHAT, WHO and WHERE questions
    #5. Ensure your child is able to understand and answer YES/NO questions first, including object functions
    #6. Model the correct answer / response following a pause
    #7. REPEAT all of theses strategies with the techniques listed below
    //HOW TO TEACH WH QUESTION RESPONSES:
    Begin with WHAT using object functions during PLAY*Join them for the highest level of motivation possible* Provide choices / options and modeling the responses (i.e. What do you DRIVE?! A VAN! What do you SHAKE? What do you DRINK? What can you EAT with?)
    Use simple wording and emphasis on the ACTION / FUNCTION of the OBJECT
    Bring you child with you to participate in daily routines throughout the and around the house . Let them take turns doing what you are doing and model, the word s of the object as well as the function. THEN ask a WHAT question and provide two options to follow up the new skills being targeted.
    NEXT... Target WHO questions next using people that are important to your child FIRST... THEN branch off into astronauts, farmers, vet and chefs! You can play Knock Knock, who's there! Hide and Seek! Searching for people and objects in a book, given a photo, on a door, and around the house!
    Finally, Target WHERE questions utilizing places in your own home to begin. WHERE should we eat lunch? Provide a choice and model two options. You can use a visual of these places in your home or run from room to room while saying the name of the place (where!) Where should we go first/The park or the ice cream store? Do you want to play outside or inside? Use visuals when at all possible and you can even make a WHERE book!
    Step 2 of WHERE utilizes prepositions! Children begin learning and using simple prepositions around 24 - 30 months of age! These simple prepositions will take place of "right there" when you ask a child where the ball is, instead of saying "right there!" they might say "UNDER the couch! Or, Inside the toy bin! Or Behind the chair!"
    Prepositions Video: • HOW TO TEACH A CHILD P...
    *After "WHAT, WHERE, and WHO" questions have been taught related to the child then begin targeting these same concepts related to their environment.
    --
    I often teach answers to WHY questions AFTER a child has demonstrated the ability to understand cause/effect. To teach the answer to a WHY question, ask a question, provide a visual and then provide a verbal prompt such as "because" or "so" _ (Ex: "Why do we take medicine?" "SO you will __ (feel better)
    In order to teach HOW questions and responses, a child must first understand and demonstrate the ability to explain simple sequences such as "how do you get a drink?" (i.e. get a cup, open the juice, pour it in) Which requires actions, sequences, and temporal steps such as First, Next, Then, Last. I like teaching HOW question while acting things out or when talking about daily routines such as "getting ready for school" You can model these steps with your child to practice.

    This is such a wonderful channel. My child is 4 and has autism. I am currently focusing on “who” questions. The speech therapist was trying to prompt him with “who’s the man selling balloons?” “ oh he’s a balloon seller” I mentioned to her that he tends to get stuck even with people at home. I am definitely trying your methods! It’s daunting but you make it look simple

      At Zeena- you should look into Foundation developmental house. My son has CAS (apraxia) and they have been a blessing! When we started about a year ago my son was basically non verbal and now he can say hundreds of words!!!!!! They offer boot camp type programs since it is in chandler and a bit south of you but the staffs credentials and abilities in the speech pathology dept are amazing and well worth the drive and money.

    Hello! What is your opinion on using motherese? Can it be used for all children, with or without a language delay, or does it hinder language development? Would you recommend changing ones intonation (ex. using a high pitch) AND grammar (ex. omitting words to simplify a sentence) when using motherese and talking to a child?

    • @TheSpeechScoop
      @TheSpeechScoop  Před rokem

      great question - there is a difference between "motherese" and "baby talk!" here's an article on it! www.littlefoodieclub.com/tastebuddy/2018/12/20/differences-in-baby-talk-versus-parentese

    Hi Kelli, I love all you videos they are so helpful thank you. Since watching your videos my 2 1/2 year has gone from completely non verbal to using up to 7 words which is amazing! but I was wondering if you could give me some advise? My kid's preschool have recently introduced a card system to allow my son to communicate which was suggested by his speech and language therapist however I have found that he is now replaced talking with the cards. Is there anything I can do to change this.

    • @TheSpeechScoop
      @TheSpeechScoop  Před rokem +2

      Ask the preschool to continue honoring his communication by letting him choose the card - and add in a short pause - where they hold the card up to their mouth and model the word with an exaggerated vowel - "AAAApes" for Grapes - to draw attention to the oral motor movement and pattern of the word so that he is getting exposure each time - they can also provide ONE grape at a time and ask him to simply open his mouth and say "ah!" or "AY" for practice productions each time he wants a grape (example) but also, as a therapist who goes into preschools.. it's unlikely that they will have time to implement this so your best chance is a speech therapist OR implementing this at home with his cards / core board.
