I had a fascination and fear of elevators as a young kid. I have a recurring bad dream about a 50s era upgraded elevator in a closed hotel that I worked on in the early 80s, probably caused by a news story of a different elevator (manual) being crashed in the basement. I still occasionally have dreams about it. I have stayed in the now renovated hotel and love to ride it. The one in this video is way worse!

That is, assuming it's still original and not broken forever! (Which I'm willing to bet if this thing breaks, it's done forever. There is NO WAY this thing could've passed an inspection and not get red tagged!)

I was just like you. I had a fear when I was a kid of riding elevators, yet I would reach in and press the buttons and get out real quick. While I too say I have no fear of elevators now in my 40's, I can honestly say I would not have gotten on this one. LOL Amazing find though and thank you for capturing it.

That's a really cool building though! Wrigley used to make margarine there. Wrigley gave it to Salvation Army sometime mid-century-ish... I'm too tired and lazy to dig further but I've been in that store probably 25 years ago. I think they cleaned the elevator that day too. I also think that day 25 years ago may have been the last time they cleaned that elevator... 🎄🎅
