Bastianini's opening act aria is awe inspiring and beautifully sung!

Wonderful, one of my favorite operas, I especially like Franco Corelli's interpretation. He just fits this role so well.

Other recordings with great interpretations of title role are Del Monaco in 1949, 1954 and 1955, and Domingo in 1967 and 1970.

It's such a pity that he did not receive the recognition he deserves during his lifetime - he stayed away from stardom deliberately, so as not to be embroiled in the vanities

Bergonzi hizo un gran Andrea, es un tenor que hizo muchas cosas excelente, lo prefiero a Giancomini. Callas siempre es la mejor en todo aquello que cantó.

@@BaroneVitellioScarpia1 Well it's transposed down, and I always avoid choosing transposed recordings. It just doesn't do the composer justice no matter how good the singing is. Again, this is just my opinion.

@@BaroneVitellioScarpia1 I had not heard of him before I listened to your Nemico della patria F# compilation. I did not look at the screen while listening and I jotted down the ones that I thought were best; I was surprised to find out that the one I had rated number 1 was a baritone that I hadn't even heard of before! Then I discovered more recordings of Maffeo and he is surely one of the most underrated singers ever. In this aria he sounds like a bass!

We get the common theme now..Callas in everything. Her voice in this (and verismo in general) showed more holes than a block of Swiss cheese. She has no place in Chenier, great as Medea and Lady Macbeth though.
Scacciati, Bruna Rasa, Caniglia, Fineschi, Tebaldi.. all of them can provide the kind of vocalism required in this music. You get it when it comes to Bastianini, Del Monaco, Corelli etc but the adoration of Callas clouds your judgement.

maybe its because a hole in her voice has more substance of meaning and musicality than all the combined density of all others combined.

@Shaun Dudley some of us don't buy that marketing slogan of the Callas club. Especially now that there's a plethora of interpretations available online from the dawn of the 20th century.
