When there’s money involved, things always become more complicated. Pavarotti should not be singing on that day. But the managers didn’t care about those things because there was money involved. People were willing to pay a thousand dollars to hear Pavarotti singing this so as long as he still could make a voice, he must step on the stage. He could not cancel.

I've heard carping around Hillebrecht and Adam for years. To my mind and ears they are fantastic voices in their specialist repertoire. Bit that's a different matter. The reason I purchased this performance of the opera is Irene Dalis - somewhat under recorded here. It also complements the Hamburg 1970 or 1971 (?) Salome recorded live by DGG featuring Gwyneth Thomas, Fischer-Dieskau, Richard Cassilly, Mignn Dunn and Wieslaw Ochmann. Hans Sotin and Franz Crass in "minor" roles? And look at this Elektra with its fabulous cast. Hamburg Oper in the 1970s was white hot! Able to attract the very best singets and conductors. My favourite recording remains the Bohm 1960s DG with Inge Borkh and Jean Madeira (an award winning album) but this Hamburg radio broadcast is next to it! David

i was lucky enough to see this twice in one week at the met. the second one was this taping. it was unimaginably stupendous in person. the audience went rightfully insane! we'll never see her like again! so lucky to have witnessed her in her greatness!

Wow! Thank you for sharing this and reminding us all of how far operatic singing has fallen! What an electryfing performance. We can hear and feel the energy and how all of the principals are feeding off of it and each other. Leontyne is simply Leontyne! So enjoyable to hear her when the voice was at its freshest and strongest, allowing her to perform with complete abandon. That last descending "o patria mia" in the cadenza is a singing lesson in style and legato for the ages. Surprisingly, Rudel proves a very fine conductor and only slightly disappoints in the Nile scene duet with Aida and Rhadames, which is too slow. I cannot recall a finer performance of Aida! All of the principals are simply magnificent! Thank you, again, for sharing this!!!!

Where was this? I saw Vickers that year in Miami in this part, but I don’t remember Stratas or Stewart being part of the cast. Meanwhile, I think Stratas is overlooked in any discussion of great singing actresses. Would love to hear her Ave Maria in this piece.

Wow the applause at the beginning. You will be very hard pressed even after all these years to find any bad words about Kleiber. A magnificent conductor he was and is in this recording. His recording of Brahms' 4th Symphony is truly divine fruit.

Kleiber is greeted with such an ovation before the opera even begins. Just shows he was loved in München! And then what a cast! Cossutta is absolutely in his element with Otello. Dark, baritonal, lyrical and complete freedom in the upper register - no strain whatsoever. Cappuccilli and Varady magnificent! (Cappuccilli as always going for the top Bb at the end of Act II) What times these were. Thank you!
