    Sutherland’s High D with Horne and Alexander was the longest, but Callas’s was the most dramatic and powerful!

      @@BestOperaMoments As for Oroveso, I think you should use Siepi's version instead of Chaliapin's. Chaliapin is a great singer but Oroveso is a bit too low for him.

    I was happy to see Cigna included here. She was a great Norma, even if her coloratura was sluggish. Ponselle and Milanov were also great.
    What sets Callas’s Norma apart, besides vocal fit, is her sense of line. It is perfect. One can hear this in the finale.
    I am missing the Adalgisa-Pollione duet here! It is an exciting piece of music.

    • @BestOperaMoments
      @BestOperaMoments  Před 2 lety +1

      Cigna is the definition of Italianate, dramatic singing, and she makes a vocally imposing Norma, albeit lacking in agility and perhaps nuance.
      Milanov's Norma is a bit of a difficult issue for me... her two early ones in '44 are vocally great, if not for a bit stiffness, but it is really not idiomatic singing. The one in '53 is already vocally very loose and not in good form at all. I would say her best attempts at the role came in '47, from her studio recitals which included the Norma-Adalgisa duet with Harshaw. But unfortunately it's not a complete recording.
      - In hindsight, Ponselle should definitely have been included.
      The Pollione-Adalgisa duet just doesn't really have exciting vocal runs that truly bring out the best (or reveal the weaknesses) of both singers.

    I’m overjoyed because I just found this amazing channel! Norma is my favourite Italian opera and your selections are brilliant, although I don’t like Sutherland’s Norma.I think no one will disagree that Callas is the best Norma. Maybe you can add the chorus in a minor and the G major duet from the second act to this compilation, probably one of the versions of Callas and Corelli. Chaliapin in the opening scene is a big surprise, I usually listened to Boris Christof but no doubt Chaliapin can sing it well.They are my favourite Boris Godunov also.

      I added Sutherland here for a comparison between her approach and Callas'. Not that I'm a big fan of Sutherland anyway. But her high D here was quite good.

      @@BestOperaMoments I always find her high notes hollow and ugly, and she sings like a school girl, quite boring.I don’t understand why many people say she is one of the best.

    • @Khalid7a
      @Khalid7a Před 2 lety +2

      @@operaclassicalmusiclover3437 They aren't hollow but very falsetto-ish and always the same, they sound very well supported and ring like a bell but with no power, she can never sing them in forte, it sounded like a whistle when she did. I agree her Norma is a joke, her voice isn't assertive, she lacks the lower range and the true legato. However let's be fair, she was one of the most outstanding voices ever recorded, and her french roles are unequalled.

    Norma es Callas y Callas es Norma, las demás como Ponselle, Caballé, Cigna, Milanov, Cerquetti y demás no llegan jamás al nivel de la Callas. Faltó el Casta Diva de Ponselle en homenaje a la primera gran Norma antes de que apareciera Callas.
