    With this video I finally see the light at the end of the tunnel, called "Color Analysis"... Yes, in theory, I get what they say about undertone that makes it cool or warm, but when I look at my customers - this theory doesn't really work! This video makes so much sense to me! Thank you, Merriam! Subscribed! Thumbs up and on I go to your next video!!!

    Thank you for this! I have cool skin undertones and strawberry blonde hair and because of the hair, most colour analysts would classify me as warm (spring), but I am definitely not. One analyst even told me it wasn't possible to have "warm" hair and cool skin undertones, but that is my natural colouring and I think that many redheads are classified wrongly.

      I agree! Hair color alone doesn't decide your coloring or color typing would be super easy! I have what appears to be ash brown hair and blue eyes (with a yellow centre) and was told it was impossible to be warm! But my skin has a bright yellow undertone which makes my hair look ashy by contrast. My hair is actually golden brown. I had yellow blonde hair as a child.

      I agree with this commenter. I have blue grey eyes, cool tones and a warm hair colour. I stick to muted cool browns and light cool lemon yellow, nothing with a vibrancy but muted and soft colours mainly from summer but I pinch some tones from spring and autumn. The theory is broken for people with cool tones and warm features and vice versa.

    I'm a winter and yet my veins appear green. What I found out over the years is that warm colors make my skin tone look reddish and my features appear quite harsh. Especially when I'd wear orange or yellow (the horror! :D). For winter IMO it is a good rule to test how black suits you. It is often said only winter types can wear black really well. I can't wear white or beige it looks horrible on me. The winter shades look better and the brown in the autumn line up. I'm mixed and it's impossible to find what shade I fall into this color theory. I dyed my hair black and I mix foundations to get the correct shade but it can turn ashy quickly.

      Amanda De Silva Hi ! She actually talked about that in an other video. In her theory, you can have yellow that are cooler than other yellow, like lemon is cooler than gold, but they are still warm colors (compared to all the colors.
      Also I don’t think someone can have a cool yellow based skin tones because skin tones is made out of red, blue, yellow with more or less black and white according to the depth of the skin. If you have more blue than yellow you have cool undertone and if you have more yellow than blue you are warm undertone.
      I think her theory is simpler than most other color analysis theory.
      But it’s not that easy to see if a skin tone has more blue or more yellow especially if the skin tone is close to neutral or if the skin is quite deep.

    I am fairly sure the reason Nicole does wear warm colors is that stylists see red hair and think warm...it is the hottest warm hair color so they are swayed by that...taking her skin out of the equation altogether her hair DOES look amazing against warm colors and better than against cool colors but her SKIN looks best in cool colors, so I agree with you. Often I read about matching eye color for a signature color...I have a warm skin tone, warm blonde hair and bright tourquoise eyes. In head shots I look my best in some version of the color turquoise (the greener the better) because it makes my eyes pop. In overall shots I look my best in warm colors like coral. Those are my two favorite accent colors. For neutrals I look my best in warm camel tones to a saddle tan color because they mimic my hair, my largest feature since it is long (besides my skin). I do really look my amazing best in overall coral color thank goodness that color has been in style for several years now so I can find dresses, tops etc all in coral. I then wear it with luggage tan accessories, camels znd lighter warm brown. I try to never wear pure black or pure white...flesh colored shoes look best on me and my flesh color is a warm lightish camel. Cool toned taupes and grey look awful on me.

    Thank you for this content Merriam. Based upon my personal experience with the Blue Base/Yellow Base color system and other personal color analysis systems, I feel the cool/warm determination of an individual's skin is ground zero for personal color analysis. It takes precedence over chroma and value as the most important first step. For those interested with this concept they can consider doing further research into Robert Dorr, an artist who was the first to observe that colors can be categorized into these two distinct color spectrums (in 1928), and that all colors within a particular spectrum are harmonious. He observed that all individuals had either a cool or warm undertone to their skin and appeared most harmonious wearing colors from the corresponding spectrum they resonated with.

    I think that the whole concept or theory of color when applied to people is that unless an analyst is personally in possession of the person's specifics, it is very difficult to ascertain a person's color by analyzing pictures. The variables introduced with pictures are obvious. The light, exposure, the background, the quality of the pictures etc. in addition to the ever-changing public looks of people like Nicole Kidman. They change their hair color, have cosmetic procedures, wear different shades of foundation, have fake tans, etc. This is what may be contributing to the confusion, in my opinion. To me first the green on the left (least amount of blue) and in the next picture the green on the right (with least yellow) looked the best on Nicole. The Blue was also fine but in my opinion the worst colors where the purple/pink, yellow and red ones. The yellow tones made her look a bit ill. As soon as there was red in the dress, both cool or warm, this emphasized the red in her cheeks. Also it seems that yellow and red color made her hair look dull.
    Edit: I also want to say that I enjoyed watching this video and I like that you think about new aspects in color theory that are commonly ignored.

  • @JuliaKirsty
    @JuliaKirsty Před 5 lety +4

    What always used to confuse me are the colors that are usually recommended for certain color types. Eg. some pinks and purples for autumns appear rather cool to me and I mostly think they don't look too good on autumns but they are on their color chart. In classic color analysis I am a summer (in your system I'd be a winter, I think) and I feel like especially those colors I'm talking about look good on me even though they shouldn't if we go by the regular system. I am not completely into your system, probably I'm way too biased by some of the regular systems but what you said in this video makes a lot of sense to me. Even a friend of mine who has been taught color analysis always wonders about me wearing certain colors and looking good in them like "how is this possible, we were taught that you should look awful in that" etc. I think a lot of the ways color has been perceived is not really suitable for color analysis at all. Color has its own language and it changes from field to field. What's right in graphic design might be wrong when coloring hair or choosing your best colors. Very interesting video and topic imho :)

    • @merriamstyle
      @merriamstyle  Před 5 lety +13

      Thank you for your comment! Very interesting that you say that. In my system, an 'autumn' would not wear purple (and people may kill me for it since that's sort of a well accepted 'autumn' (warm) color). Purple is in fact cool if we take cool to mean blue-based. A lot of stuff in color analysis is extremely inconsistent, so I'm trying to bring consistency to it and get rid of all that. Some pinks are also cool (of course). As a warm undertone, one would wear peach, not a cool pink. I suspect that for you, my future videos may make sense too. I hope you stay tuned and maybe I can gain your trust. :) I also do NOT have color analysis training because I simply can't handle the kinds of things that are said in 'color analysis'--they are inconsistent at best, and false at worst!!!!

      @calliope6623 Před 11 měsíci

      I wondered about that myself. I think I’m an autumn, and I kind of suspect that they stuck the purples and pinks in there because they felt like we aught to have something from that part of the color wheel. But I fully believe in understanding rules so that you can break them. If I hadn’t gone down this color analysis rabbit hole, I wouldn’t have discovered how well I can pull off orange and tomato red. I was a bit scared of bright colors. But also, whatever anybody says about the color seasons, black looks undeniably good on me. And silver jewelry does stand out from my skin, but in a way that I often find very bad arse. Because the thing is, colors that harmonize with your skin are great, but colors from the opposite end of the color wheel are not the bad guy. They are just complementary colors. So there’s a million ways that they might have a place on you. It’s like composing a song starting with one chord. You could build off of that chord creating a melody in a major scale, and make something lovely, or you could go in an unexpected direction and create a song that has some tension, and also come up with something good… if you’re a music person haha

      Also, I am a painter so when I got into this whole thing, I went to my studio and painted a color wheel. I figured out for myself that green and red, opposites, form the axis of warm and cool. Green, because it has equal parts yellow and blue, and red because it has neither. But blue and yellow are not on opposite ends of the wheel. If you draw a line on the color wheel that is perpendicular to this red/green axis, that line will go from yellow orange to its own opposite, blue-violet. Which leads me to the conclusion that in a way, those are the two “polar” colors, the most warm and the most cool relative to everything else. Which would explain why yellow, especially if it has a little bit of white in it, can feel almost cool, because it is at tension with a color that is warmer than itself.

Many of us have no eye for color so when you change the shade by adding white or black, and the color is still warm or cool, we become confused. We would be locked in by matching that exact color you digitally provide printed by our printer on our paper at home. Would texture of fabric change the perceived color? How would us less color knowledgeable people determine if a color is warm, cool with clear or muted quality if it varies from any of your 15 color samples?Is there a resource that could analyze the amount of yellow, blue or gray and label it like an app or program? I apologize for my ignorance and I thank you for your patience with any response. If it doesn’t exist, isn’t it a great idea for an app?

If you add a bit more blue than yellow to that brown, then it would be cool. If you add a bit more yellow, then it would be warm. If the ratio of value added by blue and yellow equal each other, then it would be a neutral brown. :)

My mother’s favorite color - on me - was yellow and so during my childhood I only had yellow dresses. I however dislike the color yellow. I don’t like wearing it and I feel like it washes me out. Other people do compliment me on it though. My favorite / *power color* is royal blue. I love wearing it and I *feel* fabulous in it, but I’m not sure if I’m a “cool” undertone because I’m Eastern Indian with some mix of Portuguese and Iranian. I did watch your ethnicity video and I would say that my skin tone and natural hair color is similar to Aishwarya. If I am a warm, can I still wear my favorite blues? Or should I transition to warmer hues? Most of my favorite clothes are cobalt, royal blue, navy, gray, black, pure white (cream looks ugly on me) & only one particular shade of red. At 10:21, I think it’s possible that the reason why the three on the left are more amazing is that they are deep, jewel tones. Those seem to suit her (winter thing). Maybe the purple and fuchsia would be just as great if they were darker, and if the second to the right was more saturated. That one is a little more of a dusty, almost grayish purple.

      Likewise, with the warm toned dresses, I would say that all of them are not good in terms of actual color. If anything, I think orange is generally the worst for cool tones. I think what is making the ones on the outside a little better for her is the darkness/saturation factor. Those colors are not as pale, so maybe they are a better match for the intensity and contrast of her skin.

I think that a lot of people believe that red is an inherently warm color, because of its association with heat and fire. I used to believe that myself, and would be very confused when they talked about warm and cool in color theory classes in art school. But in color terms, red is neutral, like green. Green is neutral because it has equal amounts of yellow and blue, and true red is also nut teal in warmth, because it has neither.

    • @dectwentythird
      @dectwentythird Před 28 dny

      Have you considered other factors, such as value and chroma? Depending on the green vs the red that you tried, it could be that not really the red and the green being a problem, but how deep/light and how bright/muted they are that affect you.
      Another theory of mine is it could be due to how much red you have on your skin. A person skin is a mix of red, blue, yellow, black or white. Then we have green being the color that has both blue and yellow, whereas red has no blue and yellow. They are also opposite on the spectrum and cancel each other out. Depending on how much red your skin has that adding more red may pull more red out of your skin and make it looks too red and imbalance, whereas green helps neutralize some of that red and make your skin looks overall more balance.

I also think that the magenta dress is the worst one for her. I agree, however, that the yellow(ish) dresses are not a good option for her, not sure why 'cause in my opinion she's warm, but from my experience as a colour analyst, pale people very seldom look good in yellow, no matter what the shade is. @@merriamstyle Thank you for replying! I don't really like Nicole in the warm red dress, but because it looks too bright for her, whearas the magenta in my opinion is both too bright and too cool and this is why I like it the least. I'm not convinced about the theory that "red is neutral" because, for example, I am a very cool type and the only red that doesn't look too warm on me is red with a very strong blue undertone, which on warmer people looks like pink. Regarding the purples, I agree that no purple will ever be as warm as any orange, but can still be warm enough to look amazing on warm types. The same with blue - if it has a hint of red (cornflower/ultramarine) or yellow (turquoise) it will usually look great on warm types. By the way, unfortunately, I have noticed it doesn't work the other way round for cool types and they usually cannot find a good shade of yellow, I suppose this is because you can add a lot of black/white/red or yellow to blue and thus create thousands of different shades of it and yellow is much less "flexible" and you cannot play around with it as much as you can with blue or green. Sorry for the long answer, but I can discuss colours 24/7 ;)

      blue is the only primary colour that is fundamentally cool. But blues can have some yellow added that makes them warmer. WarmER not warm. If you look at the palettes for Spring and Autumn you will see there are some blues and greens. Compare them next to the blues and greens for Summer and Winter and you will note the difference. Just keep training your eye to see undertones by comparing colours.

    For Nicole Kidman, or anyone, I'm not sure sure it has to do with cool and warm colors alone, especially since we've seen that, for some people, those two can change based on tanning. I do. I tan to a golden tone but when I'm not tan, I'm a cool tone. But no matter what, I always look great in tints and terrible in shades, tones, or pure chroma. Nicole doesn't look good in the bright yellow, in my opinion, because it's a tint. She needs more dynamic colors. That's also why I don't agree with color theory because dynamic and bright are not at all correlated. A person with dynamic coloring looks best in shades. A person who has bright coloring looks best in tints. The skin that is "calming" or whatever would, in my opinion, be those who look best in tones and pure colors (I suppose the pure color people would be winters but I'm not sure). One thing I've seen is that the Dressing Your Truth system seems to really work as far as colors, design line, fabric, etc. But it doesn't go quite far enough for body type, which is why I branched out looking for other information, and it's been so fascinating. I'm really enjoying your channel, and you've really helped me learn so much about my body type, but I do think that as far as color, the tints, tones, shades, and pure chroma for four main types of women (who have secondaries that should also be incorporated). For me, as a type 1/4, I lead with an outward movement. I'm a bright, animated woman. The type most often thought of as childish. I laugh when I talk, I bounce up and down, and I clap when I am really excited about something. I'm also Soft Gamine with an Ingenue essence, which perfectly corresponds to my Type 1 nature. I think each of these systems can be very useful. You can try them out and find which one works best for you. All of the bright, animated women in my Type 1 group are so much like me. We all have many traits in common. We tend to start things and not finish them. We love new things and new ideas. Our whole faces light up when we smile. We look great in animated clothing, the ones who look their best wearing pink flamingoes or cherries on our shirts and watermelon earrings. We like things lightweight. If we can feel it, it's coming off as soon as possible! We bounce when we walk. Our anger is short-lived. We're like fireworks that explode and then disappear. We even will put our arms over our heads to rest them and sit with our legs tucked up under or against our bodies. We tend to lack an aura of authority and, because of that, people try to take advantage of us. We thrive on social situations but not always big gatherings. We just can't go long without people contact. I just think people can learn so much about themselves by exploring multiple systems.

    Let's look at CMYK colorsystem and think of layering the colors, not mixing them, like it is with the skintones. So magenta ist neutral, yellow is warm and cyan ist cool.
    Magenta+cyan= Blue/Lilac is neutral-cool
    Magenta+yellow= red is neutral-warm
    Yellow and cyan= green is neutral.
    Get some more layer of one or the over to the color makes it more warm or more cool.

    But if we’re talking about warm and cool as relating to human coloring, are we sure it’s useful to apply the same warm-cool definitions used in entirely different fields, such as graphic design? Compared to artists, who work with a practically unlimited number of possible colors as well as ways of combining them, the range of warm-cool that the human skin can express is highly limited. No one wears JUST warm colors (by the general color-theory definition of what a “warm” color is) because no human being contains only warm pigments... orange fake-tanner would not even begin to describe how weird such a hypothetical person would look. Same goes for cool colors: any person who contained only cool pigments would look dead (literally, like a decomposing corpse) or like a character from the movie Avatar.

      I don't believe in universal colors! I think each person looks great in their own blue/yellow balance. For example, I think in the images of Nicole wearing the blue-based colors, she looks great, but doesn't look as good in the green and the magenta as she does in the blue, teal, and purple (those three have the most blue out of the five examples I gave). I don't think true red and true green would be universal colors either, but I guess if I had no idea what someone's undertone was and had never seen them, they would be the safest option, but still, not the best by far, and probably not anyone's best color. If you have that little blue or that little yellow in your skin, you're more likely a muted undertone (a whole other topic), in which case you wouldn't look good in bright pure colors....etc. I could go on forever on this!
