EXHAUSTED AFTER 100M? Try this

- This small changed helped one our members, Trent, go from struggling to make 100m to being able to swim 2km without stopping. If you can't swim for long distances, try changing the way you breathe.

I'll don't need this, because fortunatly, I don't have this problem. I'm exhausted before 100m.
lol
Me too by 18 metres only 😂😂
Me as well, I'm up to 20 metres now
Me
50m is my limit without rest and then I have to take a 2 minute rest to catch my breath. Unfortunately, I have to do a 100m pool race 😥 I may or may not literally drown I have 2 weeks to build up stamina before my next swim meet.
I'm actually exhausted after 50m
Same... I used to get exhausted after 25! I have been getting better over time. I hope the tips in this video will accelerate my progress. I have been exhaling gradually through the nose, but I haven't been taking that forceful exhale in the water before turning for air.
I just dont exhausted. I've been swimming for 11 years (5 competitive) it's just I need stronger muscles and power.
I know right
yesterday i did 50m as a test to attend classes. boy I left so bad that I couldn't even talk or build any thought. Some how I passed but I'm afraid of the classes.
Same HAHAHA
That woman was going through that water like fire through bushes!!
It's insane how she seems that fast without even kicking
@@devinmoore867 I thought i was the only guy who thought she was insanely quick. Glad i am not the only one 😀
Kicking adds _very_ little to speed. Freestyle essentially is powered by your arms and back
@@jackjude Kicking adds about 15% to speed. That makes a difference
I get out of breath putting my head under the shower faucet
Benjamin Wei 😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂
dont be lazy 😂
@@jogeum7695 Try turning on the hot water first before getting in. :) I wish my pool had hot water in the showers...
I've been swimming for close to 10 years and was accustomed to exhaling slowly but I did not fully exhale before the next breath, after only one or two swim sessions of applying this, it has totally changed the way I swim - truly amazing - thank you so much
How could it totally change the way you swim?
@@moviedude22 when you don't exhale fully , you need to inhale more often . Hence, getting tired faster.
Having exactly the same problem. Look forward to trying this in the pool. Thanks for the video
Ya i now go through the water like that lady, like fire through bushes!
@arina loiko same i have no idea what this means
My biggest problem is that I usually either have too much air or not enough at the flip turn.
Adrian Jaramillo I know. I did swim team for 13 years. I also had a chest deformity that restricted my lung capacity. I got that fixed. But the timing can be difficult.
Bruce Wayne how did you fix it? Was it a chest indent like Peter van den Hoheband style?
Igor Mandic' yes. I had surgery. It’s called the nuss procedure.
I had to get it fixed because it was causing exercise induced seizures.
Bruce Wayne if you were in a swim team for 13 years and still couldn’t flip turn how much of a clown are you? You could teach an animal to flip turn in a fraction of that time. Don’t try to “Johnny big balls” it about you swim team exploits, you just make yourself sound like an arrogant tit..... how do you like them apples son?
I'm a long distance swimmer, sometimes swimming up to 3 miles consecutively, and I can agree breathing is 101% everything!!! Your body knows what to do, it's your breathing that you gotta constantly think about :)
Hi, any tips to long distance swim?
P.s: I start swim 6 months ago
3 miles? I can't swim for 10 meters without getting out of breath
Elton same
Teach me senpai
I trained 8times a week when corona came and lost interest until now cuz of corona and now my stamina is shit 400metera and I start getting tired like tf use to be able to swim 3k+ (never tried more than that
Note:
Gradually exhale through the nose
Breathe out right before head reaches the surface
Everyone talking about how they are tired before 100m
Me: can’t even swim
Shinta Kikuchi then don’t swim
Scott Y so I can improve my swimming energy I tend to get exhausted after doing 50M
Boy why you even here then 😂
then what are you doing here😭
I just learned to swim a few months ago at the age of 48. I am doing laps at the pool now, but I am one of those still getting exhausted after 50m. I am almost certain it is related to my breathing. I don't have a huge amount of lung capacity either (I am very tiny with a tiny chest). I haven't been able to do a lot of intensive cardio for over two years due to chronic shin splints and stress reactions. I just pause a minute and then do another 50m or switch to backstroke to recover before trying freestyle again. But I would love to be able to do more than 50m at a time. Nevertheless, if I can swim laps for the first time at the age of 48, anyone can learn this!
I always get tired after warm ups
bro my warm ups at 10 years old were 16 laps i’m still trying to figure out whether or not it was even legal
Same I can’t even do 150m with flip turns :(
Same
so swim slowly in the warm-up :)
@@hyper6354 no. It isn't lmao that's just a 400. Really not that bad even at 10.
Swimming is EFFORT, but you can NEVER FIGHT the water, it will ALWAYS win. The trick is to GIVE EFFORT while staying RELAXED, especially mentally.
Sounds about right, practical even. But at the same time esoteric. What do you mean exactly?
@@moviedude22 It takes practice, but concentrate on technique and giving as much power to your stroke as you can but RELAX and GLIDE in between the power strokes, your legs during a crawl stroke tend to stay busy, but your upper body and arms (what's doing most of the work) should be in a RHYTHM that includes RELAXING. Try a few laps going full bore with no rest, TENSE ALL THE TIME, no gliding, and no RHYTHM and you'll see how fast you tire, then try it with the natural rhythm and POWER STROKES and you'll see not only can you go MUCH longer, but FASTER to boot. Hope that helps, get to the pool and try it.
I agree.
Asher Wong maybe stop swimming then 😂
Agreed. On my trips to China I was stunned to find that I was nearly the fastest in the pool. I'm on the slower side at home.
What I saw the young Chinese men doing was a lot of flailing and slashing trying to keep up with me. I'm by no means an expert. But I would share some techniques that i learned from CZcams.
Here I am approaching 60, and out swimming these kids. Note that I no longer travel there and swim at a Y with many more young competitive swimmers, I have swimmers I can look to to improve myself.
just got hold of this video. I began swimming again after more than 30 years. I need to re-learn. This morning I was out of breath, and here I found the solution. I will watch, learn & apply. Thanks
If you intone, hum a phrase, or ‘sing’ a little while breathing out, a repetitive phrase ( mine goes up at the end which automatically expels the remaining air) it supports both rhythm and breath control, takes away the need to monitor breathing, and allows you to focus on other aspects such as relaxing and checking into all the minutiae of the stroke form.
I first watched this video 2 weeks ago and I couldn't swim for more than 50 meters without stopping. Now I can swim my entire 1 km workout without any involuntary breaks. This changed everything! Thanks for posting guys. Greetings from Maui. Aloha!
I'm very jealous of your change. I see I posted a comment here 3 months ago and since then I've moved my max from 75m to 125 meters. But I can only manage 125m today if I have already warmed up and if I have a 30+ second breathing break before starting. I have to breathe every second stroke to make it that far and every flip turn I get more and more desperate for air on the first stroke. If I swim very slowly and breathe every 3-4 strokes, I can do 25-50m. If I sprint I can manage 50 meters in 40 seconds but I need a full minute break both before and after. I daily run 8 km in 45 minutes without any shortage of breath, so I'm not sure that it's my fitness, even though it seems like the most obvious cause in my view.
Can’t wait to get there. I rest every 25m length🙈
@@Muskar2did you fixed your problem? How are you going today?
@@matheusvinicius7231 I'm not swimming at this level anymore, unfortunately. I don't remember the exact issue I talked about here, but I was able to swim 3000m freestyle in
I did 1000 meters with my dad in the weekend. Thank you, I found this very helpful.🤗
This is why I like back ;)
Super Noodles backstroke is nasal destruction 😂
Vodka _ that’s so true
I hate backstroke, especially doing the tumbler turn
@The Watcher At least I'm an asshole. I'm attending a swimming course cuz its ridiculous not be able to move in water, especially since I live in a freaking island! After two months I learned the basic movements of freestyle, but breathing seems to be a problem yet. I'm always out of breath
Listen my coach doesn't ever do backstroke bcs he knows we like it.
Overnight improvement!
On my last swim I was exhausted after 1x 50 metre lap (requiring 30+ seconds to recuperate). Was able to swim more than 300 metres today without taking a break. Thank you.
Wow! I tried this today and what an improvement. Thank you so much!
Thanks mate. Another great vid! Greetings from South Africa.
Same here
Great advice, makes loads of sense. Will try it out at earliest opportunity. Thanks! Now if I could just find a good drill to get leg kicks in time with stroke....
I just started swiming 1 month ago, Im gonna apply this in my classes, lets see how it goes
Man this video just upped my game! I went from 50yds to 200s today. Goal is to get to 500s and I no longer see that as impossible. Thanks. This was a huge help for me. I was so stuck.
This video was a gamechanger for me. I'm a 50+ novice swimmer training for my first triathlon. I have a pretty good aerobic base from running and biking but was really (I mean really) struggling with swimming (I was exhausted after 50m). This video first - and then a couple of other videos from this channel - have me feeling confident for the triathlon on Sunday - and more importantly, really really enjoying swimming. Starting with a sprint tri (750m swim), next year olympic, and the year after that..? This channel is awesome!
Ty for helping. We need more people like you...
Tried this in my swim yesterday. By exhaling both through my nose and mouth my endurance significantly improved immediately! Continuous laps for 1K with no shortness of breath or exhaustion. Thank You!!!
Awesome! Well done
Brownie 1966 at which point are you breathing with both mouth and nose? is it at the very end of your breath only?
moviedude22 no i consistently exhale through nose and mouth and then right before I rotate to breath I exhale through nose/mouth with more pressure. I then inhale as soon my mouth clears the surface. I ensure to inhale with a big open mouth. Somehow that helps me make a bigger inhalation, which in turn helps me avoid getting into what I call “air deficit” i.e. exhaling more powerfully than inhaling. Hope this helps?
@@brownie1966 Yes! very much so, but I am clearly a bit dense with the finer points of front crawl technique.... So to clarify....simultaneous nose/mouth breathing throughout the stroke, but emphasis on big simultaneous - nose/mouth exhalation just before rotating to inhale? or is it an alternating nose exhale, then mouth exhale leading into a simultaneous nose/mouth breath?
@@moviedude22 You got it i.e. simultaneous nose/mouth breathing throughout the stroke, but emphasis on big simultaneous - nose/mouth exhalation just before rotating to inhale. Give it a try and see if it helps you. Good luck!
Your videos are awesome! Haven't swam in nearly a year and your videos help me tons! Thank you so much!
I have had this problem for years and so didn't even bother swimming laps, this info is great and I'm now going to get stuck in again. Thanks! :)
let me finish my Burger, fries and fizzy then I will definitely give this a try in the pool!!!
thanks for the advice!! I try it today and worked perfectly!!! Great vid!
This video has changed my life. The breakthrough I’ve been waiting patiently for came after watching this video. I can’t tell you how happy I am!🎉
THANK YOU FOR THESE TIPS. I went from being able to swim 50m (and completely exhausted afterwards) to swimming 100m (and being completely exhausted afterwards) in one sesssion after watching this video. I will keep practicing my breathing and hopefully soon I won’t be exhausted after 100m anymore! I’m a chronic breath holder and wasn’t fully exhaling either. Thanks again :)
Update: I’m doing 200m lengths now 😍
@@maddyhumphrys6843 Awesome news!
@@maddyhumphrys6843 and now?
Thank you. This really helps figure out why I swim halfway and have to stop because I'm exhausted.
Thank you so much 🙏🙌 This is exactly the same method an elderly man(who was in a swim team) taught me to do. I went from 100m to 500m in the same week and I still had plenty in the tank. Just a simple technique to take in air through the mouth and slowly exhale it all though the nose and mouth under water, emptying the lungs before you take it in all again.
Thank you!! This is a great video that will help me loads!! Was getting out of breath a lot, I though I was breathing it all out quickly but it seems I haven't breathed out enough because I can't take a decent amount of air in. Now it makes sense!
This is it!! I was missing this specific instruction. Now it’s time to test it. Big thanks.
Good points. The importance of good breathing cannot be overestimated.
Thank you so much for this! I struggle when doing free style a lot and can't breath propley hopeful this will help me tonight!
Excellent video! I took up swimming to do triathlons several months ago and cannot get beyond 100 yds without getting totally exhausted. If I use a swim snorkel I can go for a mile and feel exhilarated. So far, the only triathlon I felt comfortable enough to do had a 400m swim in a 50m, 8 lane pool lane. Taking about 3 breaths at the end of each length helped a lot. Thanks for the good info.
This was such a great video! Answered a lot of my breathing questions.
This was fantastic. I couldn’t explain it myself, but I knew something was up with my breathing. Thank you
Great topic and right to the point!
I've just swimming properly for fitness and this is something I'm really struggling with, this video has been super helpful going to give it a try tomorrow. Subz.
Very helpful for new freestyle learner. I think a lot of people has this problem.
Very informative and helpful thanks
I've been exhaling from the mouth and tried this my last few swims. Breathing out nose definitely helps with swimming for longer without breaks. But think I will need some more time to unlearn my previous way and adopt a new way.
I'd like to also day thank you for other tips. I've incorporated the base position tip and the slower kicking tip as a train for a long distance swim. These tips have shown immediate changes in my ability to swim with less breaks.
Base position
Slower kicking
Love to see something on psychology of going farther for relative newcomers to swimming. I’m 72, former marathon runner, but my pool “toughness” definitely needs work. Head down and plow through it? Love your videos. Many thanks.

Gradual increase in distance can be a good approach. You might increase your total distance by 1-2km each week, just like running don’t go too big too early
Can't wait for that next video on breathing on both sides. I prefer my right side and I comfortably can swim longer on my right. I've been trying to learn how to breathe on my left side but I can only do 50m at a time then I need to rest. I don't have a coach so I don't really know where to pin point my error. I can do 4 strokes per breath easily on my right and whenever I introduce bilateral breathing (3 strokes/breath) everything went haywire so it must be my left side.
Since I don't have a coach my strategy now is to swim only on my left side for the next two weeks since I'm assuming it's just like trying to learn how to write using my left hand when I'm right handed.
I needed this more than I ever realized, bless
Carbon dioxide is what makes you feel the burn and I exhale slowly when my face is underwater then aggressively when I am about to turn my head to breathe. YMMV
Thank you so much!! I'm swimming 2 relays, 50 backstroke, and an 100 freestyle at my Championship trials on Saturday!
50 backstroke is my best ever event, so I'm not too nervous about that. But I was so scared when I found out that my coach put me in 100 free! I'm not a very good long distance swimmer, and I'd rather do a 50 free, but it is what it is. I'll make sure to use these tips at trials!!
This is extremely helpful! My CZcams is flooded with breathing tips while freestyle swimming but I think this is the only video where I could actually relate to what mistake I am doing (I am doing both the mistakes mentioned in the video) and the very clear methods to correct them. I'll bring these to effect immediately. Thank you so much for sharing! ✨
Yes, this really help. Thank you!
This was helpful. I've been swimming in the ocean since childhood (60 years) but never took a lesson or picked up freestyle till last month. I had a reasonable side and backstroke. Once I began practicing freestyle I found myself doing this two-part breath. Halfway when my head first reentered the water from a breath and then an explosive exhale to finish just before I took another breath. I didn't know if this was a good technique. Now I know it's ok and I'll focus on more on stroke dynamic and getting fit before I think again about my breathing. I am somewhat out of breath at even 75M and I usually take a few seconds every 100M to get my breath back, but I think this is due to lack of fitness. Thanks for the helpful video.
my problem is I keep looking like I'm having a panic attack after 1 lap
ME
Breathing modifications. Sounds good. Makes sense. I'll give it a try,.
Amazing video! I'm always tired after 100 meters freestyle, and I actually know that it maybe the breath problem but don't know how to impove that. After watching this video and the other ones about the breath you provided, I will try in the future two weeks and hope that I can defeat 200 meters or longer. :D
This is how I breath too! I usually take 4-5 strokes between. Swimming is such an awesome way to build up your lungs! Thanks for sharing this video:)
Wow. Thanks. I'm early in developing a stroke and technique and this video was very well timed to confirm some of my Natural Instincts thanks for your time and examples
Good instructions... The biggest key for me is to relax and get into a rhythm you're comfortable with... Build from there😊
Thanks dude massive help. Going to implement this in the pool tomorrow
Now I know what I’m doing wrong! Thanks for this info, I can’t wait to hit the pool tomorrow.🙏
Dude, U reminded me of the techniques I use when doing long distance running:BREATHE ONLY WITH YOUR NOSE! THX!
Thank you for the tip. I am swimming 1,5-2km in a session but having to stop too often. Will work on this technique.
I love the underwater videos
I can’t do this stroke at all because I couldn’t understand how to breath, thank you for the video, so helpful.
Thank you so much this actually helped me
Great video, forwarded to my son who is in a swim club.
Thank you this helped a lot!
This was really helpful! I always struggle to get the breathing right on front crawl.
Amazing and brilliant analysis👍👏
Great video. I only started swimming front crawl in July. With this technique swimming for 30 mins at lunch.ove 🏊
king’s move, impressive!
Your breathing tips are spot on brother. I see there is a ton of people that say they are tired before 100m. The thing is, it takes a solid 4-6 weeks of swim training 4-5 times a week to get in good swim shape depending on your beginning fitness level. To add to that you need to train correctly with proper technique. None of this stroking with your head above water, or holding your breath, swim half way across the pool then gasping for air and doing it again. With proper technique you'll be able to swim faster with less energy, and it becomes enjoyable. Find someone that actually knows how to swim correctly and take lessons, then you can start your serious training.
This video is just what I needed. Tried swimming for 30 mins earlier today and had to stop every two lengths to get my breath back. I'm back in the pool.on Monday so will try this breathing technique
This gives me some confidence to do what feels comfortable breathing (which is close to this) and try to tweak that slightly, so the assertive breath out is a touch earlier (I'm sure my natural tendency is to make it too late). I have been struggling to try and have a more even breathing out throughout the time between breaths, thinking that is what I *should * be doing. So this video is a great help 👍🏻. Also very pleased it's only ~3 mins long. That makes it much easier to squeeze a quick watch in 😃
Thanks a lot! I have this problem too. I will try to fix this issue with your help .
Excellent video. It helped me a lot.
This video was an amazing help. I tried these breathing tips and went from being able to swim a max of 5 laps before the video, and after I’m consistently swimming 12 laps
What aspect have you changed that made you double your lap? Slow exhale->Assertive exhale just before breath in?
Thanks for the explanation about breathing, I am learning how to make it better
Thank you for the help!
great tip about completely exhaling just before the next breathe. cheers
This helped me soooooo much. Night and day
I was always taught to take as few breaths as possible on a short sprint. 50m or under. Less head turning helps you keep streamline which makes you go faster. But thanks, this will definitely help my swimming in general, because I've had such a problem with getting too tired from lack of breath.
I am a beginner, in my 7th week. I swim in a 25 yard length pool, and I am needing a few second break before I even return back across. I will try this! My goal is distance. I need to learn to flip turn....
Very helpful tips, thank you
Thank you. With the sprinter breathing, I've been doing static breath holds in my room for free diving (but no free diving), a spin off I fould was I could lift more in the gym. I thinks its because when do the breath holds (1.5 minutes to 3 minute) u have a lot of contractions in diaphragm and ribs, I think that strengthens the breathing muscles as they can get rather forceful and over time I I've strengthened breathing muscles. I haven't done any swimming since doing the practice but I'm keen to see if there's a positive affect with swimming too.
Thank you for such a clear explanation! I learned to swim as a kid but never understood the breath aspect. Just started swimming again and this is my biggest issue currently, just getting comfortable and finding a rhythm of breath to finish even one length :P I know I can do it physically because I can backstroke 100y well enough but can't do 25 on freestyle.
Thanks a lot for the useful information.
The woman's technique is good. But the mans head position is awful.
I noticed that myself. But his hips weren't deep so it seems to work for him. Must be a strong kick to keep his legs up.
I agree. He is basically looking forward the entire time and has to compensate for it with an arched back.
Yes, agreed and He is using a pull bouy
But was there enough rotation?
He's an elite iron distance pro triathlete so can't be that bad!
I needed this tip! Thanks!
My God! This video helped me solve the problem of my weak side breathing. I just continuously swam for 2 km with only weak side breathing.
I get tired quick but i dont think its due to fitness...it's the breathing i think...i think i may be exhaling air out too fast at the moment but will have to give it a try. Good video. Nicely put together.
Thank you. So much , I’m new to swimming but I loved employing these new strategies in the pool , I finished my routine faster and
I was nowhere near exhausted as I usually am . Thank you so much,!!!
Thanks for sharing this
hit the nail for me. thanks. subscribed
Nice video I will look to practice this on my next visit to the pool
So useful, thanks!
Awesome. I dump the air too soon, starved of fuel after my first 100 I shorten my stroke and it slows me down. I literally searched why is my first 100 so quick just now and found this info. Thanks for posting. I will try this tomorrow.
Thanks for their video .. will work on that
Awesome. Would love you to revisit the discussion about inspiratory muscle training with James Fletcher.
