  • This small changed helped one our members, Trent, go from struggling to make 100m to being able to swim 2km without stopping. If you can't swim for long distances, try changing the way you breathe.

I just learned to swim a few months ago at the age of 48. I am doing laps at the pool now, but I am one of those still getting exhausted after 50m. I am almost certain it is related to my breathing. I don't have a huge amount of lung capacity either (I am very tiny with a tiny chest). I haven't been able to do a lot of intensive cardio for over two years due to chronic shin splints and stress reactions. I just pause a minute and then do another 50m or switch to backstroke to recover before trying freestyle again. But I would love to be able to do more than 50m at a time. Nevertheless, if I can swim laps for the first time at the age of 48, anyone can learn this!

@@moviedude22 It takes practice, but concentrate on technique and giving as much power to your stroke as you can but RELAX and GLIDE in between the power strokes, your legs during a crawl stroke tend to stay busy, but your upper body and arms (what's doing most of the work) should be in a RHYTHM that includes RELAXING. Try a few laps going full bore with no rest, TENSE ALL THE TIME, no gliding, and no RHYTHM and you'll see how fast you tire, then try it with the natural rhythm and POWER STROKES and you'll see not only can you go MUCH longer, but FASTER to boot. Hope that helps, get to the pool and try it.

What I saw the young Chinese men doing was a lot of flailing and slashing trying to keep up with me. I'm by no means an expert. But I would share some techniques that i learned from CZcams.
Here I am approaching 60, and out swimming these kids. Note that I no longer travel there and swim at a Y with many more young competitive swimmers, I have swimmers I can look to to improve myself.

If you intone, hum a phrase, or ‘sing’ a little while breathing out, a repetitive phrase ( mine goes up at the end which automatically expels the remaining air) it supports both rhythm and breath control, takes away the need to monitor breathing, and allows you to focus on other aspects such as relaxing and checking into all the minutiae of the stroke form.

I'm very jealous of your change. I see I posted a comment here 3 months ago and since then I've moved my max from 75m to 125 meters. But I can only manage 125m today if I have already warmed up and if I have a 30+ second breathing break before starting. I have to breathe every second stroke to make it that far and every flip turn I get more and more desperate for air on the first stroke. If I swim very slowly and breathe every 3-4 strokes, I can do 25-50m. If I sprint I can manage 50 meters in 40 seconds but I need a full minute break both before and after. I daily run 8 km in 45 minutes without any shortage of breath, so I'm not sure that it's my fitness, even though it seems like the most obvious cause in my view.

Can't wait for that next video on breathing on both sides. I prefer my right side and I comfortably can swim longer on my right. I've been trying to learn how to breathe on my left side but I can only do 50m at a time then I need to rest. I don't have a coach so I don't really know where to pin point my error. I can do 4 strokes per breath easily on my right and whenever I introduce bilateral breathing (3 strokes/breath) everything went haywire so it must be my left side.
Since I don't have a coach my strategy now is to swim only on my left side for the next two weeks since I'm assuming it's just like trying to learn how to write using my left hand when I'm right handed.

Carbon dioxide is what makes you feel the burn and I exhale slowly when my face is underwater then aggressively when I am about to turn my head to breathe. YMMV

Thank you so much!! I'm swimming 2 relays, 50 backstroke, and an 100 freestyle at my Championship trials on Saturday!
50 backstroke is my best ever event, so I'm not too nervous about that. But I was so scared when I found out that my coach put me in 100 free! I'm not a very good long distance swimmer, and I'd rather do a 50 free, but it is what it is. I'll make sure to use these tips at trials!!

This is extremely helpful! My CZcams is flooded with breathing tips while freestyle swimming but I think this is the only video where I could actually relate to what mistake I am doing (I am doing both the mistakes mentioned in the video) and the very clear methods to correct them. I'll bring these to effect immediately. Thank you so much for sharing! ✨

This was helpful. I've been swimming in the ocean since childhood (60 years) but never took a lesson or picked up freestyle till last month. I had a reasonable side and backstroke. Once I began practicing freestyle I found myself doing this two-part breath. Halfway when my head first reentered the water from a breath and then an explosive exhale to finish just before I took another breath. I didn't know if this was a good technique. Now I know it's ok and I'll focus on more on stroke dynamic and getting fit before I think again about my breathing. I am somewhat out of breath at even 75M and I usually take a few seconds every 100M to get my breath back, but I think this is due to lack of fitness. Thanks for the helpful video.

After watching this video and the other ones about the breath you provided, I will try in the future two weeks and hope that I can defeat 200 meters or longer. :D

Your breathing tips are spot on brother. I see there is a ton of people that say they are tired before 100m. The thing is, it takes a solid 4-6 weeks of swim training 4-5 times a week to get in good swim shape depending on your beginning fitness level. To add to that you need to train correctly with proper technique. None of this stroking with your head above water, or holding your breath, swim half way across the pool then gasping for air and doing it again. With proper technique you'll be able to swim faster with less energy, and it becomes enjoyable. Find someone that actually knows how to swim correctly and take lessons, then you can start your serious training.

This gives me some confidence to do what feels comfortable breathing (which is close to this) and try to tweak that slightly, so the assertive breath out is a touch earlier (I'm sure my natural tendency is to make it too late). I have been struggling to try and have a more even breathing out throughout the time between breaths, thinking that is what I *should * be doing. So this video is a great help 👍🏻. Also very pleased it's only ~3 mins long. That makes it much easier to squeeze a quick watch in 😃

I was always taught to take as few breaths as possible on a short sprint. 50m or under. Less head turning helps you keep streamline which makes you go faster. But thanks, this will definitely help my swimming in general, because I've had such a problem with getting too tired from lack of breath.

Thank you. With the sprinter breathing, I've been doing static breath holds in my room for free diving (but no free diving), a spin off I fould was I could lift more in the gym. I thinks its because when do the breath holds (1.5 minutes to 3 minute) u have a lot of contractions in diaphragm and ribs, I think that strengthens the breathing muscles as they can get rather forceful and over time I I've strengthened breathing muscles. I haven't done any swimming since doing the practice but I'm keen to see if there's a positive affect with swimming too.

  • @TheHomesteadingRenter87

Thank you for such a clear explanation! I learned to swim as a kid but never understood the breath aspect. Just started swimming again and this is my biggest issue currently, just getting comfortable and finding a rhythm of breath to finish even one length :P I know I can do it physically because I can backstroke 100y well enough but can't do 25 on freestyle.
