    Thank you for your superb channel. As a mid -fifties old getting swim fit for a 3km open water swim, you have provided invaluable advice. I went from a 3.30/100m to 2.20/100m over 3 months and still much to improve. I plateaued about 3.10 and then over the last month times tumbled as my body/brain embedded. The advice last week of open arm pits for recovery allowed me to finally do a continuous 1km in the lido this morning. Thanks so much.

    This is great, when I swim long distance (for me this is 2k and above) that is when I start to cramp and it is my hamstrings that cramp. I assume this is a sign of weakness? If doing a bulgarian split squat is it better to have the raised ankle flexed or extended, or would alternating this position help?

    for me 2 and 6 bit are rather natural, however 4 bit is non-symetrical and quite tricky. That is why I invented different 4 bit for myself :D It is timed like 2 bit but each kick is preceeded by additional one, at the end these are pairs of quick kicks with an interval inbetween. Not sure if this is ok, but it somehow works for me for now.

    How do you engage your core and still have a relaxed swim? Engaging your core creates a certain amount of tension in your abs and a relaxed swim involves releasing tension.

      @@ChileanChimp Right. Hyper- extensions 👍 Another good hamstrings/ glutes exercise is laying flat, like your swimming freestyle position, preferably on a table or padded block where your arms and legs can hang loosely. You can add ankle/ wrist weights and move your legs and arms

    • @JJBpilot

      Posterior chain, and he kept saying squats.... which is not a huge hamstring exercise. Reverse hypers..... How about a reverse plank, facing the ceiling... Bird dogs... see Dr. Stuart McGill.... Reverse Nordics... Have you seen the Zen 8 trainer? Laying on the soft bench and kicking is probably one of the body position benefits. By doing bird dogs on an exercise ball, and then reverse hypers and kicking enabled me to tighten up my backside, which Brenton calls taughtness I believe, and let me front float for the first time ever! Has it carried over to my swimming yet? Ehhhh!!!

    • @functionalmovementcoaching9223
      @functionalmovementcoaching9223 Před 2 dny

      Thank you for your reply. Leg curls work your hamstrings but this is not a functional exercise and often shortens the hamstrings. Again stiff legged deadlifts I agree is a good exercise but should be done with a bit more bend in your knees as again doing deadlifts with a stiff leg is not functional.

    I have a background in competitive swimming and worked as a beach lifeguard for several years. I'm currently 60 and compete in local sprint triathlons. My swim training consists of 2 sessions per week, session 1) 400Mx6 (tempo) and session 2) 200M warm up, 100Mx8 (75 race pace w/25M sprint finish) and 200 cool down, twice. For a total of 4800M per week. Currently my open water race pace is 1:18/100M. I can do a 1:07 100M sprint. With run and bike and strength training I just can't work in any more time for swim training. I'm looking to move up to the Olympic distance do you think I can do this and be competitive (in the swim) with my current training schedule?
