      The fact that Florida turned around as soon as Vinnie Viola let the hockey men do hockey things (and got competent ones in place) shows that you don't even need to change owners, it's all about the owner realizing his point in the enterprise. Arizona never had that, their owners were either too lackadaisical or too meddlesome, and many seemed more concerned with monetizing the surrounding environment than with what the team was. Who knows, maybe none of them thought plopping a hockey team in a city of transplants could work, especially since the other franchises in the city have had their own attendance woes through long stretches of their existence. (Then again, what Arizona team HAS fielded a consistent winner in their history? The Cards got cursed with the Bidwills, the Suns pop up for about three years every decade then vanish and the D-Backs don't know what the hell they are - although a measure of props is warranted for that NL Pennant last year.)

    Utah is one of the best States for outdoor activities, everyone always refers to some sort of nightlife with clubs. No one talks about the 6 plus lakes within an hour of salt lake city, or the hundreds of miles of trails across the state. World class ski runs. Vegas is a 6 hour drive or an hour flight. And there are plenty of good places to eat and have a good evening downtown.

    No one who has been to Salt Lake City has said this. That is an area PACKED with natural beauty and things to do. Skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, hikes, trails, are SO immediate to the area. You’re right off the salt flats for speed week. There may be minimal party scene because of the LDS, but San Jose has a minimal party scene (because only boring people live in San Jose), and that team was fine for a big old bunch of years.

    I haven't been an NBA fan since the mid '00s. I know nothing about the Jazz or the owners. But considering they just paid $1.2 billion for the team, I'm assuming the _Utah Generics_ aren't going to be a discount franchise anymore. If they're at least *willing* to spend to the cap, that's going to open up so many opportunities.
    When a player had a limited no trade clause, you could reasonably assume Arizona was on that list. Those days are over. You could reasonably assume any notable UFA wouldn't go there. Those days are over. You could assume that they'd never take a run at a high profile RFA. Those days are over... especially since they have a zillion draft picks.
    I'm not predicting Utah will find the immediate success like Colorado did, in moving from Quebec. But the situation in Utah changes everything. They have money to spend. The stink that was on Arizona from all the mismanagement is probably gone. And Armstrong won't have to factor in all the ways he's handcuffed anymore, when making deals or signing players. Again, they aren't guaranteed to be good next season, or even soon. But Arizona was in a position where every decision had to be perfect for the team to succeed. That's not the case anymore. They have wiggle room now, to take risks and make mistakes.

  • @hkpew
    @hkpew Před 2 měsíci +2

    I'm pretty sure that the "there's nothing to do in Salt Lake City" line is code for "Salt Lake hasn't got any good places to drink." I don't know if that's true or not - I expect it's probably true that in terms of numbers per population it's pretty sparse, and the nightclub scene is probably not as strong as you'd find in another similarly sized city. I mean, I don't drink so I've never been looking for such places myself, so I could be wrong. And I know that Utah in general tends to be more restrictive of anything to do with alcohol than any other state (though it has loosened up somewhat over the last 20 years or so). But if you're looking for that sort of thing, and especially if you're making the kind of money the average NHL player makes, I'd be surprised if you can't find enough good places to keep you happy. And if your life doesn't revolve entirely around drinking SLC compares quite favorably to pretty much any mid-sized city in terms of things to do. That's aside from the fact that it's probably way above average when it comes to outdoor activities and natural beauty of the surroundings.

      Not true at all. Only 33 percent of Utah, all located in the far south, is classified as a desert. About 3 percent of Utah, a strip located along the Wasatch front which includes the entire Salt Lake City area, running from the Idaho border almost to Nephi - is categorized as humid continental-hot summer. Annual precipitation exceeds the amount of water that can evaporate from the soil and plant surfaces. In this area, when moisture-laden breezes rise to clear the nearby Wasatch Mountains, cold temperatures force air to give up moisture as rain or snow. Industries and communities are concentrated in the humid continental-hot summer portion of the state.

    I calculated that if they sign all their RFA's for reasonable cap hits, they'll basically have a full roster and still well over 30 million in free cap space. The only hole is in defense, where you probably want to add a veteran or two so that you don't need to rush your prospects.

    • @kingtchenka628
      @kingtchenka628 Před 2 měsíci

      Moser Soderstrom Valimaki Durzi Kolyachonok Kesselring all need waivers to go down at this point. All 6 will be on the roster (one veteran D signed for 7D?) or somebody is being traded or going on waivers

    • @romaliop
      @romaliop Před 2 měsíci

      @@kingtchenka628 I was thinking more along the lines of if the group they already have can be considered a legitimate NHL level defense corp, at least yet. In my opinion there's at least one too many inexperienced young player for that to be the case.
      In contrast, I would say that the forward corp is already at least average for the league standards even without any upgrades. As such, the 30+ million in cap space means a lot more than if there were a lot of obvious holes in the roster requiring to be filled.

    • @kingtchenka628
      @kingtchenka628 Před 2 měsíci

      @@romaliop i get what you're saying. but in practical terms, if they want to add more than 1 D this summer, they're going to need to put Kesselring or others on waivers. Or trade a young D out. Maybe that's fine but. it would have to happen. There's no possible way to add D but not trade or waiver anyone. Unless you add only one.

  • @joeleonard5783
    @joeleonard5783 Před 2 měsíci

    $50M in cap space, a couple of young potential stars and a stocked pipeline? This is far better than any expansion team could hope for, especially not being forced to pick from a random bag of journeymen and hitting a cap number with crappy players you can't necessarily off load. Armstrong now has the ability to flex and make this team a playoff team ASAP. If they were that good last season with one skate tied behind their back, this team will be dangerous when they grab the best FAs off the market. I could see them overpaying Guentzel who might struggle to get what he wants elsewhere.

Matthews gets traded to Utah, since they're the only possible team with the cap to take on his contract, further twisting the knife into the AZ fans. A new arena for the Jazz and NHL team was already in the planning phase before this Coyotes deal happened. There is public money allocated for it and more money for an MLB stadium. It's down to selecting the location, most likely on the west side of downtown SLC, and figuring out the tax structure that pays back the public bonds. Delta Center is temporary for now with renovations happening to better accommodate the ice sheet and viewing angles. There are renderings out there of this new entertainment district.

Because they have all these stockpiled prospects and draft picks I think they should view their first year as a bit of an experimental and start handing out the big bucks in 2025-2026 at the earliest. If they make the playoffs -> great! But I think most fans will understand that a better record than this season is already a decent improvement. =)
