I put the empty bottle into the freezer until it’s cold and it peels like a DREAM
Oh goodness, I missed a vital part of the tip, I apologize! I soaked the label in water first then covered with plastic wrap THEN I freeze it. The water has to absorb into the label so it doesn’t work on labels with plastic.
I’m glad it worked for you though!
I use the boiling water method to get the sticker off, then Goo Gone to remove the adhesive, then rubbing alcohol to remove the orange oil from the Goo Gone. Quick and easy!
Yup, real easy. Done it for years.
Yes, I’ve used GooGone, as well.
I know I have already posted, but I just peeled the stickers & sticky residue off 27 bottles so quick and easy no scrubbing at all... thanks again for your post, it save me so much time and energy. I’ve already shared this with friends who have given up on trying to remove their stickers. I’ll be checking out all the rest of your videos since I’m new at this
Jeez I never thought about putting hot water INSIDE the bottle. 😂 I always just soak it on the outside and peel away like a plebian.
Her method is to time consuming
@@Ftybr57 what's yours?
@@Ftybr57 For me, it only takes about 10 minutes to get the label peeled off, another 10 or 15 for the bottle to reach a manageable working temp. I work on other tasks during the process. Then the remaining adhesive comes off with a combination of olive oil, Dawn, baking soda, and scrubby sponge.
Thanks for this. I tried removing GT labels a different way before. This was quicker, simpler, and less work.( I did keep the hot water in the bottle while the baking soda goo did is work.)
Omg you literally read my mind! Who knew it would be so difficult to get a GTs bottle label off!! Thank you for a wonderful video as always!!❤️❤️😍 love from Maryland!
Wow!!! Baking Soda trick saved me literally hours of scrubbing! Thanks a lot for the tip :)
Lemon essential oil makes taking off the sticky residue a breeze. Just apply enough oil to dampen the residue, give it a couple minutes and you can usually just wipe away the residue. It’s also natural, inexpensive, and smells great!
I heat the bottles in the oven at 250F, dozens at the time.
I am so happy to have found your channel, I recently started purchasing kombucha and have decided to start making my own. I have so many kombucha bottles and I tried your solution for removing the labels and it worked out perfectly so thank you. It was very quick and easy, I was about to just leave the labels on and now I have fresh clean bottles to
use for me on brew☺️
This worked great! Poured boiling water in. Waited 5 minutes and label removed easily. After applying the baking soda and oil paste to the still hot GT bottle I found the glue residue came off after 5 minutes. I simply rubbed the residue off with a paper towel. No scrubbing needed!
Finally got it to work on the kombucha bottles. I find so many uses for them. The next one up is an amber Kevita bottle. Can’t wait.
I am so happy to learn how to get the sticky residue off! thanks.
I love your videos, you're like the authority on kombucha. I have so many gt bottles that have little label parts stuck to them! Definitely going to try this soon. Something that looks really interesting is all the ferments going on behind you. I would really love it if you made a video going into detail about what you like doing for other 2F flavoring or even other ferments that would be super interesting!
Great demo. Thanks. I’ve tried hot tap water. It works on some jars, but not the kombucha ones. I’ll boil some right now. Another “solvent” that works for removing sticker residue is peanut butter, followed by Dawn and a scrubby sponge. I have some expired peanut butter that I use. And it works great.
Love your videos. Thanks! I just did this for all of my old gts bottles
Thank you! I have about a dozen bottles that I peeled the label off, but they still have that tacky residue. It's been so frustrating trying to scrub it off.
Another trick I learned brewing beer is to place a pile bottles in a cooler, carefully fill with boiled water from a pot enough to cover all the bottles, stir in some oxyclean and close the lid… the next morning all the labels will be floating in the water and any residue easily wiped off with a wet rag. Run the bottles through the dishwasher or rinse out thoroughly and you’re good to go.
Just bear in mind that OxyClean is made with chlorine and asbestos which there are no safe levels of for human consumption, so you might just keep in mind for edibles.
I found this so helpful. Nothing else I had tried worked. My bottles are now/will be label free now.
One thing I did do differently, however, was placing the bottles in the boiling water, and turning the stove on low. For, the water in just the bottle, did not do anything at all.
In general, other than that slight change, this procedure works!
so many good tips! thank you so much.
For once a video where I learn something new. Nice method thanks for the share.
After peeling off the labels I use Dawn Power Wash to remove the sticky residue. Just spray it on the bottle, wait a minute and use a sponge to rub it off. Works like a charm for me.
Quite the wealth of knowledge. You vids are great
I see your brew log on the counter! I just bought it and LOVE IT!!
Yay!!!
Thanks for the tips! I would try adding some Lemon oil to the paste, that might help the label come off more easily
Love your channel. I use a steam cleaner & it takes no time at all to remove the label and adhesive. You can get one on Amazon for like $25 and it’s useful for cleaning other things too.
Thank you! This seems like such a small thing, but really qualifies as a, "Life Hack." Looks Soo much better than using one inch squares of paper towel soaked in acetone to gradually remove residue!
good info!
Great tip.... I’m going to have my bottles cleaned up in no time
thank you❤️❤️❤️
Wow that boiling water idea is so much safer than the hair dryer idea and a great hack - thank you! (Bonus that you've proven the bottles are legit heat-safe :)). I bet my alcohol water spray bottle that I use for fruit flies and odors in kitchen would work great to get residue off too, though you actually don't need do to that step since soaking in hot soapy water will also get all that off. I'd just been using my bottles with the labels on but I think I'll do this removal. Thanks again!
Steel wool and dish soap works. Did it today and cleaned all the glue residue off perfectly just need a little muscle and scrub then your good to go!!
Thank you for sharing. For small areas of sticker residue, you can use an eraser (:
I have had one like that but I use rubbing alcohol it works nicely too ❤😊😁
Wow, that’s amazing trick, I’ll try to clean my GT bottles. How did you clean the inside the used bottles especially the ones with very tiny mouth ? Thanks 🙏
I’ve always used Ajax & steel wool.
♥️💗♥️
Katy
Use baby oil (only baby oil) to remove the residue. Trust me it works like gang busters. Just pour some on the corner of a rag and start wiping it on the bottle and it comes right off
OMG!! Thank you so for this video!!
P.S. you are too cute!! 🥰
Yes! Ice spent hours scrubbing GT's bottles
Good idea with the baking soda and oil...I've tried just oil in the past and it's still difficult to get that remaining stickiness off.
Goo gone works really well too.
True! I just gave my personal tips because I usually already have baking soda + oil at home and would rather not pay for a separate chemical-laden product when I already have ingredients at home that do the same thing. But if you like goo gone, that's great too! :)
Thank you... very helpful. It will save me lots of time and effort.
How do you ensure that your small-mouthed, brown bottles are clean inside? I refused quite a few of these empty ones as I was concerned about not being able to clean them properly.
I usually pour water inside and shake it with soap. After rinsing all soap out of it, I fill it with water and chlorine (about 2 tb sps /L) and let it sit for half an hour..
My grandma's tip is to use peanut butter, the oil helps break down the glue residue
Good tip too :) I just prefer to use straight oil since it does the same thing without the need to waste the peanut butter :)
Professional brewers wash works as well
Thanks for that.
I pour boiling water into the bottle to the top of the label then peel it off without waiting.
I work on the idea that I want to get to the glue after it is heated by the glass and before the label and the glue start to separate.
If there is a residue I stick tissue paper on and let it stand for a couple of days.
Steel wool (stainless steel with continuous filament) will remove the glued tissue from the glass.
[Also known as Scotch-Brite Stainless Steel Scouring Pad]
Try it..
I’ve been soaking the bottles in water a couple of days then peeling off the top of the label. Then soaking some more then scrapping it off with the back of a knife. I’ll try your way next time. Thanks
Orange essential oil works really good too
for sure but why waste it when baking soda is cheaper ? 😁
Where do you get replacement lids? And, thanks for the video!
Clifford James Bloomfield if you google for “replacement GTs bottle lids, you’ll see a few options. I’d give a direct link but unsure if that is allowed here.

Hey been brewing for a couple months now and your guide’s are amazingly helpful. I have a question though. How would one Create their own starter tea/Scoby without an outside source? Create from scratch sorta thing.
Andy Bailey I think from what I’ve read that you need a Scoby or starter. I mean the kombucha yeasts and stuff aren’t just naturally in the air. I mean I’m sure there’s a way to do it but you may have to live in China 200 years ago for that to happen 😂😂
You can grow your own with patience. When I first began I was given a starter Pellicle that many refer to as a Scoby and 2 cups of starter tea. I had two gallon jars though. It was summertime. I used her method and processed one jar with the pellicle and starter tea that came with it and the other was processed with 16oz of GT Original kombucha as a starter tea and organic cane sugar and black tea that was it. I used a few coffee filters with a rubber band to seal both jars and left them alone for weeks in a low lit area. I checked and they began looking like gelatin. After I reviewed her post and video about mold I stopped worrying about that and let the jars sit some more. Both jars had pellicles by time I was ready to process for F-2. The starter pellicle I was given grew a new firm pellicle around it. Eventually I separated them. So I managed to grow my own in the subsequent jar. Hope this helps.
That isn't a thing you can do, because each SCOBY is starting from something. In reality everything in the world is starting from something, though...like, a seed or a spore or whatever. That's what you're doing when you start from a store-bought - you're giving that germ of life ingredient and the conditions it needs to grow, a get-together. So you have to start from something and be in a location where you have access to the temps you'll need to do the brewing (like, not Greenland or Chad, for example).
I put my GT bottle in the dishwasher and it pealed right off and now I have baking soda mixed with oil on the bottle.
SOS pads take the glue off very easily
ALDI brand kombucha bottles are the easier to pull the label and the cheapest kombucha brand to get, too. No mess.
That paste is a miracle!
I was using some pretty nasty chemicals to do that and guess what - this paste worked much better. :P
shoutout Aesop cameo
Mayonaise...ready to go instead of oil mixture.
Also, wont boiling water possibly shatter the glass bottle?...Be careful!
I use TKO orange cleaner and soak it off.
I would love for u to address how to reuse the lids. I feel like the kids from the tall brown bottles don't seal at all if u take out the cleared seal under the lid, but it gets to b a pain to take them out, wash and replace them back. The white lids don't never seem to seal great either....any tips on any of that?
The lids tend to wear out pretty easily, so I don't have tips on re-using those, but I do have a comprehensive video on choosing the right bottles + caps. And in that video, I talk about replacement lids for common store-bought bottles, so definitely check it out if you're interested! www.youbrewkombucha.com/choosing-right-bottles-caps
non-label question, but for scobys, how many brews does it take for a layer of scoby to thicken to 2cm/1inch?
all my scoby layers are so thin, barely 5mm/quarter inch.
SCOBY size doesn't really matter as much as strength of starter tea. Is there a particular reason why you're trying to grow larger SCOBYs? I talk a bit more about what to expect during first fermentation and SCOBY growth (or lack thereof) here if that's helpful :) www.youbrewkombucha.com/what-to-expect-f1
Pit in freezer overnight, let sit out for 15 minutes , no glue.
😮 I’ll HAVE to try this! Thanks.
Great idea - I'm sure the condensate soaks it through that way. Thanks!
GooGone and Magic Eraser.
Ever find a way to remove the screen printing put on the GTs special edition bottles? I tried nail polish remover today, unsure if it had acetone in it - and it failed.
Great vids, love your new kitchen. Your videos have a slightly different feel to them. Is someone else editing them? They are the same but slightly different ... can’t put my finger on it
I haven't tried removing those screen-printed bottles, so can't help you there, unfortunately. Same editor, new camera. :)
You Brew Kombucha I’ve tried steel wool with no effect. If I get it figured out, I’ll let you know.
Mind me asking from which camera you came from and which one did you go to? Both take great pics. Keep up the helpful videos and stay covid19-free. :)
The glue for that would not have acetate in it usually, and if it doesn't then the acetone would not help you. Soapy water will do the job. You don't need anything fancy here.
Does that work for plastic bottle as well?
Yup!
Bear in mind that a plastic bottle will leach microplastics into whatever you put in touch with them at every change in temp, since that is how they "decompose" (even though that's not really decomposing :)). So they're not actually food-safe.
That is a tough one to get off. Company must want it to stay on. Turpentine comes from a tree. It might be OK.
I do not pour out my hot water from the bottle and I peel the label much slower with almost no glue residue to contend with. I then wipe with goo-be-gone* or goo-gone* and then wash with soap and hot water before removing the water in the bottles. This is the easiest solution for me.
How do you make "starter tea"?
The cheapest ways to do it is to find raw unfiltered kombuca at the store and use that make sure it is unflavored don't go online and buy the starter fluid from anywhere from $7 to $20 that is a scam buy a $3 bottle still it over priced but at least you don't have to pay for shipping
@@victorybeginsinthegarden thank you and it is the easiest way however, I'm trying to brew my own in a place where you can't find kombucha. I could travel to the USA and buy some but that's just unrealistic.
I do thank you for the answer though
@@fabiGBOtown then what you can do is brew tea in sugar water and let it sit for about 2 weeks and you will have a starter tea kombucha in my opinion is a bit of a scam it is a better alternative to pops and soda but it is as simple as that
@@victorybeginsinthegarden so all I need to do is brew some green or black tea with sugar and let it sit?
Do you happen to know the measurements?
At what point do I know that it is ready?
If there is a video that covers this I would be happy to watch.
Thanks in advance

1:38 Oh I did find the seam alright
Amazing how pathetically perverted some people can be. I think you're at the wrong channel. I'm trying to share helpful information and won't tolerate this disrespect.
You Brew Kombucha I didn’t even get that was a perverted comment until you mentioned it 😂
You Brew Kombucha Ignorance is bliss!
Nice tips thank you.
EDUARDO MIAMI FL 🇺🇸
Rubbing Alcohol is also effective in removing the goo.
Or you can use goof off
I use WD40 and paper towels.
but in plastic bottles? i guess those arents plastic
Plastic is not a good idea for kombucha.
WTH do they use to put these labels on?! It stinks like serious chemicals too when you pour the hot water in! It’s ridiculous!
Small, circular, scrubbing movements. Lol!
Are people really this hard up to save a glass food jar?
Have you looked at Ebay lately?
Mama used to fill her medicine bottles with water and put them in the microwave and the label would come right off..
My second thought is to use wd40 to get the glue off..
actually it's so easy to remove the remains glue using gasoline and tissue..
Or ,, just blow your hair dryer on the bottle ,,
I literally say that in the video?
I got an experiment idea for you, can you please 🙏try to brew kombucha with erythritol 😁? I have only 1 scoby so I can't play with it yet, I'm afraid I'm gonna kill it.
SCOBY cultures can't properly process synthetic sweeteners like erythritol unfortunately. I cover that here :) www.youbrewkombucha.com/sugar
You need calories (energy) for the SCOBY to grow and erythritol does not have those.
