    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
This iMac originally came with a 2.8GHz processor, in this tutorial I will upgrade it to the maximum 3.06 GHz processor.
Keep in mind that this “example” upgrade is not very economical since the performance gain is only minor.
Time and effort involved in replacing an iMac CPU are significant.
Even with an upgraded CPU, this early 2008 iMac will not support macOS High Sierra.
A lack of SATA III and the inability to upgrade the graphics card severely limits this machine's performance.
Having said that, I always enjoyed using this computer!
Even at 10 years old it performs well at most everyday tasks.
Especially browsing the web, watching movies and so on.
On the one hand, this system has a nice large 16:10 display, which is great because most displays today are only 16:9, on the other hand, I found it to strain one’s eyes after prolong use. Some modern displays may be significantly more gentle to your eyes.
Also, notice the in my opinion thermal constraints that ever flatter iMac's seem to have.
If you can’t open it easily, how will you be able to prevent dust from clogging up your cooling system over time?
While the iMac 8,1 uses the "Socket P” unfortunately more powerful quad-core CPU’s such as the "Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9300" will not work in this system. Therefore the fastest supported CPU is the “Intel E8435 Core 2 Duo LGA478”.
In summary, I love the iMac, but obviously, it has some downsides to it as well.
I hope this video did help you to learn more about computers, and macs in general.

@@filoshi First of all, which Mac is that? Recent Macs are almost non-upgradable, but it depends on a specific model. Second: CPU update is a more intense task and needs more dissasemble (not every model can have it upgraded either).
SSD update sounds like an awesome idea to quickly fix a Mac and prolong usability for a year or two.

@@filoshi I've used Late 2008 iMac. Yes, you can upgrade SSD there. CPU upgrade is probably worthless on those machines. But expect to get 1-2 years more of the system. It's very old, only for basic tasks.
Another option to get some speed improvement is install some Linux distro there instead of Mac OS. It should work faster on that old hardware. But honestly I would just upgrade the SSD and buy the newer computer within a year or so.

about better performing graphics cards, for the Imac. there are several types that work perfectly. they are from alienware laptops. The lowest price one is GTX 765. This is a two gig card, and will run most video games. The next is a gtx 770 with 4 gig, and will play even demanding games. The most expensive, ($350.00 + shipping) and has 8 gig, so will play with all the shaders and rez on the most demanding games. The 765 gtx 770 can be had for around 100.00 dollars. @@ReviewTechTV I'm helping my mom upgrade her iMac 8,1. We upgraded the hard disk drive to an SSD, and we maxed out the RAM to 6 GB. She has the 2.8 GHz stock E8235. I'm trying to determine the fastest CPU we could upgrade to. 3.06 GHz 8435 (what you upgraded to) seems like the fastest CPU Apple offered with this Mac. When you mention the quad core model, you're referring to the Q9000? But you mentioned the Q9300 doesn't work? Do you have a list of supported processors? I'm considering the T9900 or the Q9300 if one of those would work, as they seem like the fastest models. Any advice on where to identify which CPUs are supported by this Mac? Great video, thanks for the information!

@@AdamJaz That's a great question, maybe have a look at the MacRumors forum, I recently got a 2009 Mac Pro, and upgraded it, they had a great CPU list for that ➜ forums.macrumors.com/threads/mac-pro-cpu-compatibility-list.1954766/
Having said that, I would stick with the 2.8 GHz, because the perforce increase I got from the 3.06 GHz was only very small. Even if the hardware could support faster Intel quad-core CPUs, the iMac BIOS (EFI, Boot ROM) will not support them… hence it is not worth the trouble.
Take my used 2009 Mac Pro, for example, it needed a BIOS (Boot ROM) update before it was able to accept newer and faster Xeon CPUs. Essentially, CPU microcodes are sometimes changed and updated by Intel, and then these updates have to find their way into the Apple Boot ROM, which is usually included with the macOS installer.

Cut out a panel on the back, attach hooks, so you have easy access to hdd and can open up for extra cooling. if properly sized (140x140mm) you can even hook up a secondary fan you can power via usb

Newer iMacs have much better and efficient cooling design. It was redesigned completely without optical drives, with new much thinner and cooler display panels, and with low-power storage. So most of the heat comes from CPU+GPU, through one big radiator.
It is also available in double-fan design like iMac Pro in practically same enclosure.

Too bad it doesn´t work with Intel Core 2 Quad Q9100.. This apple guys are really bad by limiting their Bios to use only duo core processors. Is this a MacOS or hardware limitation?.. I use linux Mint on mine Btw.

    • @ReviewTechTV
      @ReviewTechTV  Před 9 měsíci

Apple's limitation on using only dual-core processors in some older models is a result of hardware design choices and macOS optimization for specific hardware configurations. It's not necessarily intentional but might be due to compatibility issues with the motherboard and chipset. Older hardware becomes incompatible with newer operating systems due to changes in architecture and optimizations for newer components.
