  • r/Talesfromtechsupport The lady in this story has the best monitor in the whole building: a $3,000 state-of-the-art gaming monitor. But as soon as she has 1 tiny little problem with it, she demands that the IT department throws it away and replaces it with a new (worse) monitor. OP is more than happy to comply, and he ends up with a free $3,000 monitor! If you like this video, let me know by smacking that like button!

I'm pretty sure that the Chinese immigrant that sat next to me when I used to work a call center job years ago got told that occasionally. He spoke better English than I normally do, just had a very slight accent, but only enough to tell he wasn't native to the states. They usually told him that they wanted to speak to someone in their own country. Funny thing is, he was one of the better techs (he had about the same technical skill level as I did, but much better customer service skills). He did go by a Western name, though, since people strangely could not pronounce his very easy one syllable given name. Although, people that call into tech support are usually already cranky and can become quite rude quickly; I got told more than a few times to put someone of the phone who isn't stupid after merely giving the standard greeting when I forgot to neutralize my thin, but present "Southern accent." As for the CD-ROM cupholder, in the mid-90's I worked at a computer repair shop part-time, there were several customers that thought their CD-ROM (and later DVD-ROM) was a retractable tea or coffee cup holder. Of course, there were some that knew better and used it as one anyways as well (and one that converted their broken lightscribe CDRW into a proper one by reinforcing the tray, cutting out the center, and adding a hook that dropped, it worked well for the cups of the newly opened at the time Starbucks). You also forgot "But the person at Best Buy said my modem was wireless... I shouldn't have to plug in the power cable"

Neither he nor the instructor were hurt but the carrier was a 'write-off. An enquiry, just short of a court-martial, was set up. The C.O. cut it short by calmly telling my mate, "If you'd been a trainee electrician and broke a screwdriver nothing would be said. You are a trainee driver who broke a vehicle. You weren't reckless at all. End of the matter". On this occasion common sense prevailed.

During the entire first 10 minutes the volume was clearly set a bit too high for those speakers and the sound clipped and it generally sounded horrible and was hard to understand, so students kept trying to tell her to lower the volume so it would be easier to understand the narrator.
The teacher nodded, and then turned up the volume even higher, making the entire thing even worse. The entire class just gave up on that then and there.

If you've already graduated high school but are going to college, even a junior college, ask the computer techs there if you can go around with them. If their schedule isn't too crazy most will say yes. Hands on experience beats degrees all day long. Certifications do matter, like: Network+, CompTIA A+ (that's an entry level cert for computer maintenance and repair), and the CCNA (Cisco's networking certification, many junior collleges offer the classes but the test for certification is an extra expense).
I had a lousy computer teacher in high school, and I'm betting most don't share this info. Gotta push the kids to go to college for a useless degree instead of getting certs that actually matter.

I know this video's old but a lot of these stories brought up a lot of memories. At one point, I was working in the community college I was going to as the sys admin's assistant. We did everything building and maintaining the servers and networks to desktop troubleshooting. The department we supported was the digital art department. So fun people all around. At this point, people were still using zip drives. An art teacher (she's a great person), told me that she needed to load he drivers and software for her zip drive on her replacement mac. So I sat there thinking for a bit. The mac was os9. They drivers didn't fit on a floppy. It didn't have a USB port for thumb drives. And while I was thinking, she interjected with. "So, I think what we can do is load the drivers on to a zip disk and we can loaded it on to the computer." I blinked. She really is a good person. I knew she would get it if I just repeated it to her. So I told her, "So you want to load the zip drive drivers on a zip drive disk so we can install in on the computer to get the zip drive working." 3 seconds of silence... "Oh, duh! I guess I should leave this to you." Sometimes the brain moves faster than reality.
The second story is, before the above story, I use to work in an animation studio in America. As such, I had a very similar 20 inch CRT monitor. It served me well until it died and I too had to switch to a LED. Dell had a good deal on a 21 inch so I was very happy. Considered buying two, but just ended up with 1. To my surprise, Dell sent me the monitor pretty much within a day of me ordering it. This was the early 2000's, things don't usually get delivered that quickly. So I check my email for the confirmation. Instead, I got an email from Dell saying they apologize and that monitor was on back order. They'll update me when they find more in stock. I was like "wtf?" I looked at the monitor, poked it to make sure it was real, and then called Dell tech support.
me: "Hey, so I'm calling about my dell monitor order."
dell: "I see it's on back order. What can I help you with?"
me: "So, here's the thing. I got the monitor. It's sitting right here. There must be something wrong with the system."
dell: "Oh, really? Yeah, I'll go ahead and fix that. Thank you."
    me: "Sure, no problem."
A week passes. I get another email. "We're still looking for a monitor to fill your order. If you want us to keep looking, please reply to this email. If we don't get a reply, we'll cancel and refund the order."
    Another call to Dell.
me: "Hey, so you guys sent me this email. I called about this last week. I got the monitor."
    dell: "Oh, really?"
me: "Yeah, check your support logs. I called about this last week. It's here. I mean, I'm happy to receive a free monitor, but I feel I should do the right thing and report the error in the system first."
dell: "Thank you very much for reporting it to us. I'll make sure to update the system."
The next week, the same email. At this point, I was like "Fuck it. I did my due diligence." But I was also curious as to how long this would go on. So I replied to the email for them to continue looking to fulfill the order. This happened for about a month afterwards until I forgot to reply to the email in time. My order was refunded and cancelled... I read, on my dell monitor...

Omg, that engineer really got my support. I was honestly thinking the story might not end well for him, but the end was awesome. This reminds me of a story that happened at our shop almost two years ago. My colleague was talking to customers about getting a new iPhone. All of our equipment was secured, of course, but we had single items in (also secured) showcases to show to customers. So, a group of young men came in and said they wanted to have a look. They must have watched the front desk for a while, because they knew exactly what to do and they were super fast. (It was a very crowded day and people hanging around the shop weren't an off sight). The moment my colleague opened the showcase they shoved past her, blindly grabbed three phones and made a run for it. I didn't really see what happened, because I wasn't working sales, but tech support at the back of the shop, but I saw my colleague running out the store, shouting at the top of her lungs - which wasn't very loud, because her voice was weak at the time. Anyway, about a minute later she returned, sobbing madly and breaking down. I rushed over to help and asked what on earth had happened. She just kept sobbing and stuttered out how they took three iPhones and how she was gonna be fired now, because she didn't stop it from happening. We all tried to calm her a bit, sat her down in the back office, then called the police and our shop manager, who wasn't in that day, because he was in another shop training new employees. The police came, we all had to make a statement and my poor colleague looked like she just wanted to die the entire time. When finally the police was gone, our shop manager looked at my colleague and said "I don't know what to say... Just, what were you thinking? Running after those guys, you don't know what they might have done to you. Never, do you understand me, never do something like that again. Insurance will always take care of the loss in cash, but if something happened to you..." He then addressed all of us. "This concerns everyone in here. Never chase people who pull stunts like that. Call the police, call me, but don't do anything that might get you in danger." My colleague was then given the rest of the day off, because she was really shaken. I witnessed one other theft in the shop while I was there, even though we moved the showcase farther away from the front desk after that happened. You learn that these things happen somehow. Well, it wasn't all bad, but I wouldn't want to go back. I've been at a service office (same company) for about a year now and super happy there.

As such friends and families would call and ask for help if they broke. A friend of his family called and said there computer died. He eventually went over to the house and the computer HD had no information on it. He thought this was weird, but spent some time reinstalling windows on it. About a week later they called up and said it was broken again. He went back after a few hours and again the computer HD was completely wiped. He spent more time reinstalling windows. Another week goes by and they call him up saying it was broken again. He told them don't touch anything and he would be right there. He rushed to their house only to find that in his previous visits they wanted to be helpful. So before he showed up they had removed all the fridge magnets they had stuck to the side of the tower. He told them to stop putting those on the case. Never had that issue again.

That teacher wasn't just inept with computers, she was inept with common sense.
How the hell can someone be told repeatedly the exact same thing, and it only semi-registers on like the 5th try, and even then they have no idea what they're talking about. How does someone like that get a teaching position?

I have listened to several of these r/ subreddit readings, and I think I like the way you read "the Best" the way you voice the Karen's , the entitled kids. etc. Good Job. Big Fan

That last one was especially true. No place I've ever worked has ever accepted a technician/engineer until they've bricked something. As long as they learn from the experience, it's simply a rite of passage.

As an IT technician also working in education, I can absolutely relate to the story with the NAS. Some teachers are so technically inept, ignorant and unwilling to move with the times it's not surprising the country doesn't move forward. A while back there was an opportunity for a headmasters position at my school as the old one was retiring, and a few colleagues pushed me to apply saying I'd have the guts to get the school back in shape. True, but I'd also fire half the staff on the spot for gross incompetence.
Also rSlash, it's pronounced 'NAAZ', not 'N.A.S'. A small detail, but would be much appreciated. I love when you cover this subreddit, you're doing great work.

Hahahaha! Oh my goodness! Some of those tech support guys and girls working there are freaking SAINTS! I would have exploded like five minutes after if I were in their shoes (unless I was really REALLY desperate to keep my job so I wouldn't explode but my eyes would surely send the wrong messages lol!)
I also felt for that last guy! Poor guy panicked over a stupidity and a really bad accident and timing! Poor guy!
