The same narrow people, the same mindless chatter. I felt as if I were standing at a great precipice, with no one to pull me back. No one who cared, or even noticed.” Sure, cal could buy her happiness for her. But rose wanted MORE out of her life. So, Jack died. And rose still married a man she actually loved and had a good family. She could’ve turned that diamond in at any time and gotten rich. She found the diamond in Cal’s pocket when they reached shore in NY. So she knew she had the diamond that whole time. But she never used it. She made it on her own. Rose honored the promise she made to Jack. That she’d never let go, and she’d have a good life. Almost everything she did, there was some element in it to honor her promise to Jack. She did everything by herself that her and Jack talked about doing together. She had a good life and she knew it. Marrying a rich man just cause they’re rich can’t replace that. We think it can cause we’re middle class or financially poor. So we fantasize about having that money and that good life. And maybe we would have. But we truly don’t know what all they did to get all that money, either. Most of it was through nefarious means. Not sure any of us could’ve lived with that. Some rich people don’t have consciences, but those of us who do, wouldn’t have been able to put up with it. Also, with the one you love, if they give you a very expensive gift, you feel the love and affection which comes with it. But if you don’t love that person, all you will see and feel is the expectations, obligations and strangulation that comes with it. Rose got engaged to cal to please her mother and cover her father’s bad debts. She wasn’t marrying cal for the right reasons and she knew it. She didn’t love cal anyway. So the wealth and the riches and trinkets cal gave her felt like a dog collar around her neck, slowly strangling her. When you truly love someone they won’t feel that way. You will feel the love and affection behind those gifts.

As an adult watching this movie I can see Cal in a different way now. I think he tries, especially in quiet one on one moments like this to please Rose. He came from a wealthy background and he tried to impress her the only way he knows how, he really doesn’t know another way. He’s the opposite of what Rose truly wants but he doesn’t know that. Yes, he later shows himself to be sociopathic and quite ruthless, he expects to get what he wants. Again he doesn’t know any different, he’s never had to wait for anything. He’s the only rich guy on the ship who wishes, for a second, that he was poor like Jack.

I feel like Cal really was genuine here. I actually went "Awwww" with this scene. But he doesn't have many moments like this with her and it doesn't help that he mocks her interests (like her art paintings) and controls her. His sexism doesn't help his case either, so I think if he had been a lot more tender and sweet with her (like Jack) he would have won her heart.
He was a conflicted man, was Cal. I think he was tormented because he couldn’t understand why Rose couldn’t love him, and why she would go with a penniless drifter instead. He wanted her to love him, desperately. He didn’t realise that no amount of expensive gifts can make up for a defect of personality where he couldn’t permit Rose even a measure of independence.
Billy Zane played the part of someone born into money very well. Call is clearly someone who was raised to view everything as a commodity to be bought and sold and himself as one of the elite few who could do that. So yes he loved Rose. But he could only understand that love as another transaction. His generosity something she should repay and her actions in ignoring him over Jack to be a despicable betrayal.

I know, in the 1800’s till the 1930’s the men were shown as powerful. But, they were not supposed to be shown as weak this is why cal doesn’t really show is love as it is shown as ‘weak’. Overall, you can see that he loved her and if he had shown his love to her I feel like she would’ve started to love him back.

It shows that if you act right and are good and nice and genuine people and caring just like Molly’s characteristics then luck will come to you. *I’d like to personally headcannon that Molly is the only person that knows that Rose survived, because let’s face it if Rose was Molly’s son then she would’ve been free and had it all and would’ve been free to both party with Jack and marry Jack-I wouldn’t be surprised if Molly went with her to the lower class to party. I think the problem here is Cal’s love language makes him ignorant to what Rose actually needs from someone. Throughout the movie, Cal’s solution to everything is to just throw money at the problem (as seen how he tips the guy in Southampton to take care of his bags, or how he tries to bribe Murdoch for a seat). His love language is money. But what he doesn’t understand is Rose isn’t like that. She’s not the kind of person to like something just because it’s expensive. Based on Cal’s comments towards the paintings Rose bought, they weren’t really worth much, but Rose admires them for their beauty and depth. Whereas she dislikes the Diamond because it’s heavy, impractical, and practically has no substance other than being ridiculously expensive. That’s why Rose gravitated towards Jack. Jack actually took the time to talk to her about what was bothering her instead of throwing an expensive gift. And he gave her something she actually requested - the simple hand sketch.

Yeah, when I was a kid and I watched the movie I thought Jack was the best guy, but now I am in my 20s , and if I I was rose I'd have chosen cal too because it's always great to love someone who loves you so much that they'd even forgive you if you cheat on them. When I was a kid I never realized rose was cheating but when you're an adult and watch this, you understand the depth, it's like your perspective completely changed . At the very beginning of this scene Rose is holding a mirror, and on the table at 0:05 you can see a butterfly hair clip. These are the same things that Brock found in the water and showed old Rose earlier in the movie!
This is the only moment in Titanic that Rose turns for a few seconds and has a think to herself to fall for Cal especially when he shows her the diamond and she's taken so back by it.

I remember watching this film for the first time ever and hockley didn't make all that bad an impression by this scene. A bit materialistic but still sympathetic.

In the movie, it's supposed to be the same kind of diamond as the Hope Diamond. The Hope Diamond is worth $200 million to $350 million so imagine what the Blue Heart must be worth.

Sure, cal could buy her happiness for her. But rose wanted MORE out of her life. So, Jack died. And rose still married a man she actually loved and had a good family. She could’ve turned that diamond in at any time and gotten rich. She found the diamond in Cal’s pocket when they reached shore in NY. So she knew she had the diamond that whole time. But she never used it. She made it on her own.
Rose honored the promise she made to Jack. That she’d never let go, and she’d have a good life. Almost everything she did, there was some element in it to honor her promise to Jack. She did everything by herself that her and Jack talked about doing together.
She had a good life and she knew it. Marrying a rich man just cause they’re rich can’t replace that. We think it can cause we’re middle class or financially poor. So we fantasize about having that money and that good life. And maybe we would have. But we truly don’t know what all they did to get all that money, either. Most of it was through nefarious means. Not sure any of us could’ve lived with that. Some rich people don’t have consciences, but those of us who do, wouldn’t have been able to put up with it.
Also, with the one you love, if they give you a very expensive gift, you feel the love and affection which comes with it. But if you don’t love that person, all you will see and feel is the expectations, obligations and strangulation that comes with it. Rose got engaged to cal to please her mother and cover her father’s bad debts. She wasn’t marrying cal for the right reasons and she knew it. She didn’t love cal anyway. So the wealth and the riches and trinkets cal gave her felt like a dog collar around her neck, slowly strangling her. When you truly love someone they won’t feel that way. You will feel the love and affection behind those gifts.
Kate in this scene just really suits this era she looks like she belongs from the 1910s . I can imagine her in a black and white picture.

As an adult watching this movie I can see Cal in a different way now. I think he tries, especially in quiet one on one moments like this to please Rose. He came from a wealthy background and he tried to impress her the only way he knows how, he really doesn’t know another way. He’s the opposite of what Rose truly wants but he doesn’t know that. Yes, he later shows himself to be sociopathic and quite ruthless, he expects to get what he wants. Again he doesn’t know any different, he’s never had to wait for anything. He’s the only rich guy on the ship who wishes, for a second, that he was poor like Jack.
I got a chuckle out of reading this…Rose is selfish and short sighted. And she would have left Jack down the road. This is a movie.

I feel like Cal really was genuine here. I actually went "Awwww" with this scene. But he doesn't have many moments like this with her and it doesn't help that he mocks her interests (like her art paintings) and controls her. His sexism doesn't help his case either, so I think if he had been a lot more tender and sweet with her (like Jack) he would have won her heart.
He was a conflicted man, was Cal. I think he was tormented because he couldn’t understand why Rose couldn’t love him, and why she would go with a penniless drifter instead. He wanted her to love him, desperately. He didn’t realise that no amount of expensive gifts can make up for a defect of personality where he couldn’t permit Rose even a measure of independence.
Billy Zane played the part of someone born into money very well.
Call is clearly someone who was raised to view everything as a commodity to be bought and sold and himself as one of the elite few who could do that.

Always loved the idea that a rule stricken woman like Rose’s mother that valued money over her own daughter’s happiness became broke, while a good and genuine and kind hearted woman not afraid to speak her mind (which back then would’ve gotten a woman shunned, but nowadays would’ve been welcomed with open arms-clearly Molly’s husband has good taste) became rich. It shows that if you act right and are good and nice and genuine people and caring just like Molly’s characteristics then luck will come to you.

I think the problem here is Cal’s love language makes him ignorant to what Rose actually needs from someone.
Throughout the movie, Cal’s solution to everything is to just throw money at the problem (as seen how he tips the guy in Southampton to take care of his bags, or how he tries to bribe Murdoch for a seat). His love language is money. But what he doesn’t understand is Rose isn’t like that. She’s not the kind of person to like something just because it’s expensive. Based on Cal’s comments towards the paintings Rose bought, they weren’t really worth much, but Rose admires them for their beauty and depth. Whereas she dislikes the Diamond because it’s heavy, impractical, and practically has no substance other than being ridiculously expensive.
That’s why Rose gravitated towards Jack. Jack actually took the time to talk to her about what was bothering her instead of throwing an expensive gift. And he gave her something she actually requested - the simple hand sketch.
Honestly take a minute to look out at a outward perspective . Yes he’s a very wealthy man & tad if not a lot Arrogant. But you can tell all he wanted was her love and was willing to pretty much give her his entire Fortune for it .
We don’t really know if Jack & Rose would of last any longer than Rose & Cal . Love is a interesting spell that is unpredictable.
Jack & Rose love was based off thrill , rush and adrenaline . Like an super nova , shines bright , dies early .

Yeah, when I was a kid and I watched the movie I thought Jack was the best guy, but now I am in my 20s , and if I I was rose I'd have chosen cal too because it's always great to love someone who loves you so much that they'd even forgive you if you cheat on them. In the movie, it's supposed to be the same kind of diamond as the Hope Diamond. The Hope Diamond is worth $200 million to $350 million so imagine what the Blue Heart must be worth.

He dismissed her in every way. Ordering her meals for her, bashing her love for art, screaming and breaking shit, and hitting her. He should eat a dick. This movie would have been very different if Cal was a sweetheart like this in every scene.

Cal knew that Rose wasn't exactly looking forward to their marriage. But even a snob like him was willing prove himself to the girl he loves. Everything he did up until this point was to earn Rose's love. And to him her love was pretty much worth his entire fortune. He bought her the rarest most beautiful expensive diamond necklace the world has ever seen. On top off all the paintings, and booking her and her mother a trip to the states on the most luxurious ship in the world. Even letting a "gutter rat" sit at the same table as him. All of this, just to please his fiance. If you don't deny me, there's nothing I'd ever deny you. Open your heart to me. He couldn't even wait one more week to give her that necklace. But this is where the poor bastard comes up short. You can't buy woman's heart. And frankly even if he wasn't an pompous ass, she'd still never love him because his life isn't the one she wanted.
Ok,my question is:how would anybody react if they just gave away a million dollar necklace and their fiancée was being more than flirty with a guy she has known only for a couple of days?I used to hate Cal(not the actor who did an amazing job portraying him)but I kind of feel he needs to be understood to a certain point.He turns out to be violent which is not ok,yet he was humiliated badly by her,for those times. While jack may seem too good to be true , such people exists , it's difficult to find then but yes they do exist. And about cal, cal may have nothing similar to a 17 year old girl, but yes he tried his best. Rose never loved him, no matter what he did, that's the whole point.
