They recorded this six years after Freddie passed. The champagne glass on the piano was left there for him. Cheers, darling.

Every time I listen to this song, I get a lump in my throat! Brian finished writing the song in early 1997, after Queen reformed for a one-off appearance with Elton John at the Theatre National de Chaillot in Paris. Also in 1997, John Deacon officially retired from Queen!! 😢 In this video, you can see John & his bass guitar drooping with sadness!! 😩😩

Brian wrote this song shortly after Freddie passed. He gave a copy of it to Roger to listen to and Roger put it in a drawer somewhere and forgot about it. A few years later he found it, listened to it and called Brian telling him he really liked it and thought they should do it as a Queen song. I love this but it is so sad. The champagne glass on the Piano is a tip to Freddie because in most every show, he would toast the audience. Also there are several little references to old videos and Freddie/Queen songs. Musically, this song is excellent, Brian is a great writer but it is still so very sad and you can see that on each of their faces even though it had been a few years since Freddie passed. I think it was really hard to perform together with such a huge hole in the band and in their hearts.

For your info, the drawing of the angel was made by Freddie himself, and John left the band after this because he couldn't go on in Queen without Freddie. Sadness all round.

This is definitely a sad song. The bass player, John Deacon, is the person I feel for the most. He looks so lost without Freddie. He only got together with the remaining members of Queen a few times before deciding he didn't want anything more to do with music as it was so painful.
Another song you should listen to is Too Much Love Will Kill You. There are two versions, and I believe you should listen to the Queen version first to formulate an opinion on it and then the version by Brian May to see what you think of the song.

I'll never forget the day Freddie passed away as it was the day before I was due to start work for the first time as a 16 year old. Being gutted is an understatement. R.I.P. Freddie, always remembered, never forgotten. The GOAT

You are still in the beginning of the Queen rabbit hole. I would of not recommended this till much later. But it is a beautiful tribute to Freddie. I would also hold off listening to These are the days of our life. That one is very painful to watch but is another great effort by Freddie and the guys

Even though of sickness, video and number of times for some reason today, I felt like I lost someone I loved very deeply. Brian wrote this song and if you notice at one point, John just lays down his base he can’t play anymore all of the clips with Freddy in it just really tugged my heart. They really loved him.

Two suggestions, The Making of One Vision, The Making of We are the Champions both great, nice to see them working on music in the studio. Studio version of Somebody to love, Studio version of Who wants to live forever, both so different from the live versions. Great channel you have, love Queen

Sad song, but the video with the most funny moments of Freddie's is so overwhelming, the 2 together is as controversial as Freddie's personality was.

I have to wonder were you warned beforehand that this was a tribute TO Fred after he'd left us? 💔💔💔💔💔
Personally, I'd have either warned you or not given it to you this early in your discovery of Queen.
It's like asking someone who has heard two or three tracks on the radio to watch the Live Aid show.
You need to have a feeling for the band to feel what we feel when such a mammoth track is played.
Saying that, I can see you appreciated this one.👑
P.S I sing along to all Queen songs but I've never been able to sing this without a crack in my voice and when my nose starts running I just give up. 💔💔💔💔💔

Can't remember who had the initial idea for the song, it's on the documentary "Days Of Our Lives" either Sir Brian started it and then Roger put it in the drawer for a few years or vice versa. They wanted the setting to be as if they were playing ideas with the four in the studio. It started life as three friends tribute to Fred, but as it was released in 1997 they then said it would be for Diana Princess Of Wales who Freddie had been friends with and a male clothing designer who was murdered outside his flat again someone Freddie and Diana knew. I think this might have also been John Deacon retirement from public life, he'd played with the other two only a couple of times after Freddie passed in 91, John was the youngest of the group and Fred took him under his wing, the four were like brothers, and said four misfits together, strangely Freddie and Sir Brian only lived down the road from each other but never met until university bought them together

They all look so sad, I noticed that John and Brian never look directly at the camera. Roger also wrote a beautiful song for Freddie called "Old Friends" which is also worth checking out.
