"Bohemian Rhapsody" is a decent film about a rock band, but it takes a *lot* of liberties with history. Worth watching, but if you want to learn about Queen, look up a 3-part documentary called "The Magic Years".

So excited you finally worked your way to Bohemian Rhapsody. Your journey down the Queen path cannot be complete without Bohemian Rhapsody. In fact, your journey into great MUSIC of the past cannot be complete without Bohemian Rhapsody!
Bohemian Rhapsody, was released in 1975 on the album "A Night at the Opera" which gives a hint as to the musical genre. Freddie Mercury was a huge fan of opera so this song was written as an operatic suite consisting of five distinct parts: an acapella intro, a ballad segment, an operatic passage, a hard rock section, and a reflective coda. Generally it is classified as rock-and-roll, but specifically as a "rock opera" and "progressive rock." Truth is, labeling any Queen song, or Queen the band, is next to impossible!
"Bohemian" describes an unconventional, artistic style with freedom and individuality as key elements. "Rhapsody" in musical composition refers to a single work comprised of episodic, diverse pieces arranged into a free-flowing structure designed to heighten emotions. This song came to be because Freddie had pieces of songs he never completed, so he put them together, each section totally different yet masterfully blended into a truly epic masterpiece. It is the band's magnum opus, and is unanimously considered one of the best songs ever written.
As for the meaning of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", Freddie was purposefully vague. As with most of the greatest songs, the lyrics are written to be poetic and mysterious. Are they literal or figurative? As separate pieces initially, should the song have a singular meaning? Who knows! The meaning is open to interpretation for each listener to decide, based on how the music and lyrics touched them. You will read comments claiming the song's meaning, but the fact is, the entire band has never stating a specific meaning and has been firm that there isn't one, or if Freddie DID have a specific interpretation, he never shared it. Any assertion of the meaning pertaining to Freddie's sexuality are speculative and because certain groups WANT that to be the meaning.

This has been my absolute favorite song for 49 years. A masterpiece, which Queen is super famous for, not only this song, but many, many others. The movie, a bio-pic, was good and renewed the public’s interest in Queen, since Freddie Mercury, the lead singer, passed away in 1991, so 21 years of great songs from them. But the movie, while great and the actor Rami Malek won an Oscar for, he did such a great job, is factually incorrect in many ways, but to get a sense of the band and it’s history, it’s beginnings, is worth the watch. Brian May is a genius lead guitarist, Roger Taylor (the falsetto-ist) is the drummer, John Deacon on base, they all sang great except John, the “quiet” one, and their harmonies with Freddie and live in concert, also, are legendary. Both Roger and Brian have great voices, have also had side bands and albums, as has Freddie (only one, besides an opera one with Montserrat Cabbale’ called Barcelona), but with Freddie as the lead singer, I think it’s what pushed the band to the great heights it achieved. Thank you for reacting to them! I’m already subscribed…I wish the best for your success here.

The a cappella intro is only Freddie singing lead and harmonies which are multitracked together. The operatic section is three of Queen recording and tracking together over 180 harmonies to create the effect of a chorus. There is a documentary (Queen Official) about recording the song and video, "Inside The Rhapsody". Thanks!

The 'Bohemian Rhapsody' movie depicted Freddie Mercury's biggest years w/ Queen... Great movie - Rami Malek did a fantastic job portraying the late Freddie Mercury... There were some inaccuracies in the movie, for example: the song 'We will rock you' came out when Freddie had long hair... Freddie also knew the band Smile from the local scene and had seen them live numerous times before he joined them and transformed them into Queen in the early 70's (The movie gave the impression that they didn't know him very well)
Another omission was the conflicts in the studio were mainly between guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor. Freddie was often the peacemaker between the 2 musicians... The record label executive (played by actor Mike Myers) who was always criticizing Queen was fictional but he did represent the challenges from the music industry that Queen faced early in their career.
The movie ends with Queen's Live Aid 1985 performance... but a few scenes actually took place in 1987 - the scene where Freddie was diagnosed w/ AIDS and revealed that to the band... Another where his former manager and ex-bf Paul exposed his sexuality to the press...
'Bohemian rhapsody' became Queen's first #1 hit single in 1975 and broke the band into superstardom in Asia, Europe and America... Before that, Queen was struggling as a UK rock band and released 3 albums w/ minor success... Their first major hit single came in 1974 - 'Killer Queen'... which was a playful cabaret-style song that Freddie Mercury had written.
In 1975, Queen proposed recording the album 'A night at the Opera'... which became the most expensive record made to that point. Freddie was a fan of opera and theater music and wanted to incorporate that style into a Queen song... All the band members wrote songs but Freddie was the one who struck on the idea of a 'mock opera'... depicting the tragic tale of the end of a life at the hands of his executioners... Freddie played piano and constructed the arrangements in the studio; the vocal harmonies and operatic vocals he kept adding as the track was being recorded and 'Bohemian rhapsody' had well over 100 overdubs on the tape as Freddie added layer upon layer of vocals to create a majestic sound... Ultimately, the track was nearly 6 minutes long and not the typical "radio single"... So, the band gave a copy to a prominent radio DJ who supported Queen and he promoted it heavily. It quickly became a huge hit in Europe, and then America.
Queen was playing UK clubs in 1974... but once 'Bohemian rhapsody' was a hit, Queen were playing the Hammersmith Odeon venue in 1975.
Freddie Mercury was diagnosed w/ AIDS in 1987, so Queen's 1986 tour would be their last... The band continued to work and record new music until Freddie passed away in late 1991. The surviving members played Queen's last concert in the spring of 1992 as a tribute to Freddie Mercury and invited major guest singers (and bands) to sing Freddie's songs live that night at Wembley Stadium, the same venue as Live Aid 1985 and where Queen headlined shows in 1986.
One of the amazing things that happened in 1992 was the movie "Wayne's World"... a comedy starring actor Mike Myers, became a huge hit and featured 'Bohemian rhapsody' in the soundtrack... The song became a major hit again worldwide(!) 17 years after it was first released.
After the 2018 release of the biopic movie 'Bohemian rhapsody'... the song became a major hit single worldwide a 3rd time(!) and boosted the popularity of Queen's catalog of music w/ new and younger fans.

The movie is about 50% fact and 50% fiction, but is very entertaining, a good story. Just don't assume anything in it is what actually happened without fact checking elsewhere. A lot of Freddie's fans feel the way he was represented didn't do justice to him, in that it almost entirely missed how funny and sweet he was, and what a generous friend.
For a more factual, but longer, history of the band the documentary Days of Our Lives is better.

I had assumed that you had already reacted to this song or I certainly would have suggested it to you. I am so glad you have decided to revisit it, it is not only beautiful, it is iconic. You will find several people offering their opinions on what this song is about but the truth is that Freddie never said, he wanted to leave the interpretation up to the listener. All I know is that I love it and have never grown tired of listening to it for the last 50 years. The movie is very good but bear in mind that it is a movie, not a documentary so there are lots of things that are not actually based in fact and the timeline was greatly modified to make it into more of a movie format. Squeezing 20 years of basically doing the same thing into an interesting movie is quite a feat. Thank you for reacting to this wonderful song. This is a rhapsody constructed from 3 songs that Freddie had written but had never finished. Since they were similar in theme, he put them together and created this masterpiece.

They did a darned good job with the movie, but it's not a biography. There were things in there that didn't happen, or didn't happen the way they showed it, so please don't take it as gospel. You mentioned the collision between genres. I heard another reactor call it a musical buffet. I'm going to take every opportunity to say that. It made a pretty big impact on me.

The movie is good but some of the scenes aren't timed accurately when compared to when they actually happened

the movie freddie is nothing when you get to know the real Freddie. when i was 14 i already understood the meaning of this song, so it is not that difficult when you understand that coming out as gay to religious parents you had to be willing to kill to the person that you were expected to be.

The movie is worth watching, but it’s about Freddi Mercery more then Queen

I take the lyrics to mean he’s killing pretending to be heterosexual and saying goodbye to that part of his life and embracing his homosexuality 🤷 I could be wrong. 😂
